The Incredible Race:  A Pursuit for All Survivors to Thrive

August 28 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

With the intention of elevating the philanthropic contributions of Black South Carolinians while also centering those most impacted by interpersonal violence, The Hive Community Circle (The Hive) is hosting its inaugural “The Incredible Race:  A Pursuit for All Survivors to Thrive ” on August 28, 2021, known as #Give828, a day for centering Black-led and Black-serving organizations. The competition will consist of two-person teams completing a 5K obstacle and trivia course routed along Black Historic Sites and Businesses.

In 2020, the field of interpersonal violence not only witnessed and responded to the global pandemic of COVID-19 but also the global pandemic of domestic violence and abuse heightened by the staggering effects of COVID-19. In South Carolina, which ranks 11thin the nation for domestic violence homicides, organizations such as The Hive pivoted their work in to respond to the immediate needs of survivors, validating that they often need more than one method of support to attain safety and self-sufficiency.

“The theme of The Incredible Race is “A Survivor’s Pursuit”. Teams have been tasked with the challenge of obtaining each component of “The Survivors Pursuit Hexagon”, representing the six elements all survivors need to attain self-sufficiency. These methods of support are Safety, Wellness, Economic Stability, Emotional Support, Healing Justice, and Wholeness”, stated Ms. Thomas.

The registration fee is $50 per team. There are three categories: Two-person team of family, two-person team of friends and two-person team of businesses and organizations. The race will start at 8:00 am and the award ceremony and Give 8/28 Community Celebration will be held at 10:00 am. Attendees will be able to enjoy the service of a variety of food trucks, community organizations, and locally owned businesses representing the community. The competition route will include Historic African American sites such as the Modjeska Simkins House, Allen University, and Chappell Memorial A.M.E. among others.

The Hive is a local culturally specific peer advocacy organization serving women and girls who have experienced sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking in SC. To learn more about The Hive visit, www.thehivecc.org.
