SUMMARY:A Glorious Cause: Author Hastings Hensel leads a Kayak Tour to the Battle of Black Mingo
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 29 at 11:00 a.m.\, GCL will partner with River Reader Kayaking\, LLC of Murrells Inlet in order to provide a special educational program as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution.” Hastings Hensel will take a limited number of participants along for a free two-hour guided kayak tour along Black Mingo Creek in Georgetown County to the site of the Battle of Black Mingo. \nOn September 29\, 1780\, General Francis Marion\, known as the “Swamp Fox” for his evasive guerrilla warfare tactics\, and his Revolutionary forces attacked a party of Loyalist troops left behind by British Colonel Banastre Tarleton\, scattering them and driving them into the Black Mingo swamp. Hensel is owner and operator of River Reader Kayaking\, a Master Naturalist\, and a highly regarded author who will weave together fascinating details about the battle and Francis Marion with a larger understanding of the human and natural histories of the creek. \nKayaks\, paddles\, and PFDs (personal flotation devices) will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring water\, a snack\, sunscreen\, and bug spray. The program is free and open to the public\, but space is limited\, so registration is required. DESCRIPTION:A long-standing Clinton tradition is getting new life this spring through a community collaboration. CrossFit864 and Musgrove Market have teamed up to launch Shop the Lots\, a multi-location shopping event set for Saturday\, May 30\, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Pitts Street in Clinton. \nThe event grew organically out of two separate ideas coming together. CrossFit864 owner Janice Long has been hosting yard sales at her location since 2009\, a tradition that became a staple for Clinton shoppers over the years. When Musgrove Market was planning its own Shop the Lot event for the same day\, the two business owners saw an opportunity. \n“We used to do it twice a year\, spring and fall\,” Long said. “Teaming up just makes sense and gives shoppers even more reason to come out.” \nSusan Tallman\, co-owner of Musgrove Market\, agreed that the partnership was a natural fit. “Janice was already planning her yard sale and we were planning our own event\, so collaborating was just good business sense\,” Tallman said. “Everyone loves the thrill of finding a hidden treasure or a great find\, and Shop the Lots gives shoppers two locations right here in Clinton to do just that. We think this is the beginning of something really special for our community.” \nThe event will feature antiques\, crafts\, food\, and drinks across both locations. Musgrove Market is located at 202 Musgrove Street\, and CrossFit864 is on Pitts Street in Clinton. Shoppers are encouraged to visit both lots for the full experience. \nThe event is open to all.
