DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. “A Glorious Cause” presentations begin at the Waccamaw Library (41 St. Paul Place\, Pawleys Island\, SC 29585) with South Carolina Institute of Archaeology & Anthropology Research Professor Steven D. Smith\, who will use recent archaeological findings to shed new light on how the community of Snow’s Island aided General Francis Marion\, known as the “Swamp Fox\,” to successfully implement his evasive guerrilla tactics against British and Loyalist troops in our area of South Carolina. \nThe Georgetown County Library (GCL) will host a series of 20 public educational programs and exhibits as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative of the Georgetown County Library.” The programs\, which will be free and open to the public\, will take place at each of GCL’s 5 facilities across Georgetown County from March 2026 through June 2026. The project is made possible by a $39\,300 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL).

DESCRIPTION:How do plants and animals survive in the salt marsh – a salty ecosystem that changes multiple times a day based on the tide? Organisms like fiddler crabs\, periwinkle snails\, and picklegrass have amazing adaptations! After meeting in the Discovery Center\, participants will take a bus ride to the salt marsh to search for some of these intriguing creatures. Walking in pluff mud is included! \nRecommended for ages 6 and up; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants need to wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and muddy (ex: rainboots) and bring another pair of shoes to change into afterwards. Participants will need to dress for the weather and bring sunscreen\, bug spray\, and water. Program is weather dependent. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 7 at 6:00 p.m. as part of “A Glorious Cause\,” in partnership with the Coastal Carolina University HTC Honors College\, the Waccamaw Library (41 St. Paul Place\, Pawleys Island\, SC 29585) will host renowned historian Dr. Nicholas Cole\, a Senior Research Fellow at the prestigious Pembroke College\, University of Oxford. Dr. Cole has been invited to share his expertise on the figures and ideas that drove early American politics in lectures around Europe and the United States. He serves as Director of the Quill Project\, an innovative software platform used to recreate the original political and historical contexts in which major democratic legal documents were created. The Quill Project’s flagship project is a presentation of the 1787 Constitutional Convention\, which produced the Constitution of the United States. \nThe Georgetown County Library (GCL) will host a series of 20 public educational programs and exhibits as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative of the Georgetown County Library.” The programs\, which will be free and open to the public\, will take place at each of GCL’s 5 facilities across Georgetown County from March 2026 through June 2026. SUMMARY:Family Fun: Cyanotype Creations
DESCRIPTION:In this exciting new program\, participants will create artwork using plants and sunlight! Get inspired by examples from the collection of Visiting Scholar Dr. Erica Walker\, then explore outside to pick out some interesting plants to use. Participants will use watercolor paper and pre-coated fabric; this creative process is accessible for all ages (no darkroom or hazardous chemicals required). Leave Hobcaw with brand-new art pieces to display at home! \nRecommended for ages 6 and up; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear clothes they are willing to get messy\, dress for the weather (and the possibility of biting insects)\, and wear closed-toe shoes.
