DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Department of English and Foreign Languages for the annual Lander Writers Series featuring author and Lander alumnus Robert Maynor. The event will take place on Wednesday\, Nov. 1\, at 7 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium on the Lander campus and is free and open to the public. \nRobert Maynor is a 2012 graduate of Lander University\, where he earned a BA in English\, and the author of The Big Game Is Every Night\, which was selected for publication in 2022 by Hub City Press. It’s now available wherever books are sold. Short stories by Maynor have also appeared in several publications\, including Blood Orange Review\, BULL\, The Carolina Quarterly and CRAFT. His work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and he is the past recipient of the Larry Brown Short Story Award and the Coker Fellowship in Fiction from the South Carolina Academy of Authors. \nA reception will follow the event\, where copies of The Big Game Is Every Night will be available for purchase. Senior Lecturer of English Brittany Cuenin will present “Traditional Fairy Tales: The Good\, the Gruesome and the Grimms” beginning at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nThis lecture examines the first fairy tales recorded by the Brothers Grimm\, Charles Perrault\, and Madame de Villeneuve. Fairy tales have permeated cultures across the globe for centuries as entertainment. Professor Brittany Cuenin explores their historical\, social\, and cultural significance\, including famous stories such as Cinderella\, Beauty and the Beast\, and Hansel and Gretel. These stories often include grotesque villains and brave protagonists. Cuenin’s lecture will explore what adults and children learn and enjoy from these stories\, as well as how tales have been depicted in well-known illustrations and more recent Disney digital representations. \nCuenin is the director of the Lander University Writing Center and a lecturer in the Department of English and Foreign languages\, where she teaches courses on children’s literature and fairy tales. Cuenin earned her B.A. in English and M.A. in English Literature from Clemson University. DESCRIPTION:The Laurens County Chorale’s LOVE’S PURE LIGHT concert will be presented at 7:30pm November 17\, 2023 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clinton and 4pm November 19\, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church Laurens.  \nThe Chorale is led by their new artistic director Matthew McCall. Mr. McCall is a Laurens County native with a BA in Sacred Music Organ from Presbyterian College and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of South Carolina. He presently resides in Columbia\, SC where he serves as the Director of Music and Media at Shandon Presbyterian Church.  \nThe music will be uplifting and a great way to prepare for the upcoming Christmas season. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door or from any chorale member.
