SUMMARY:LC Museum Lecture – Viciousness in the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will hold nothing back in the telling of what actually happened in the battles and skirmishes of the Revolutionary War on Tuesday\, January 16\, 2024\, at 7:00 pm at the Laurens County Museum.  “The Viciousness in the Revolutionary War” is the title of the next talk in the Revolutionary War Lecture Series.  This lecture will be for adults only due to the graphic nature of the topic.\nAshmore said of the lecture\, “In many ways\, the Revolutionary War has been romanticized.  I assure you that war was anything but romantic.  In every lecture I have ever given\, and as many gory details as I have listed\, believe it or not\, I have held back significant details.  In this lecture I will not be holding back.  I think this lecture will give a more accurate portrayal of what really happened.”\nThis lecture is co-sponsored by the Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Committee and the Laurens County Museum.  There is a $5 suggested donation for those not members of the museum. There is not a fee for Laurens County Museum members.\nThe Laurens County Museum is located at 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC\, 29360.  The exhibit hall is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and is free and open to the public.\nUpcoming events include a lecture on January 30 about Lucy Banbury\, an enslaved lady who escaped to freedom and became an active loyalist in the Revolutionary War.  On Sunday\, February 4\, the “Martha Franks:  Educator – Missionary – Humanitarian“ Exhibit will open with a talk and refreshments. They will also provide reading glasses where necessary. The primary focus of this gathering is to address the crucial matter of selecting new members for the Cross Hill Fire Department Board. \nMichael Bolick\, a resident of the Cross Hill community and former fireman\, emphasized the significance of community involvement\, stating\, “Being part of the Fire Department Board is a tremendous responsibility and an opportunity to make a real difference in our community. It requires individuals who are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Cross Hill residents.” \nThe meeting will include discussions about the roles and responsibilities of Fire Department Board members. The board plays a pivotal role in decision-making processes related to the fire department’s operations\, ensuring it meets the needs of the community it serves. \nA crucial aspect of the meeting is the upcoming vote to select new members for the 5-person board. To be eligible for consideration\, interested individuals must be Cross Hill citizens. Those interested in serving on the board are encouraged to attend the meeting. \nFor further information regarding the Fire Department Board and the election process\, interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to Bolick in advance of the meeting. He can be reached at (864) 547-7415‬. \nIn addition to the board member selection\, Cross Hill is also putting out a call for volunteers to join the Cross Hill Volunteer Fire Department. This presents a unique opportunity for community members to actively contribute to the safety and well-being of their neighbors. Volunteering as a firefighter allows individuals to undergo training\, learn valuable skills\, and become an integral part of the emergency response team. \nResidents interested in becoming volunteer firefighters are urged to reach out for more details on the requirements\, training programs\, and the process of joining the Cross Hill Volunteer Fire Department. \nAs the community comes together on January 23\, the hope is that the meeting will not only fill the vacant positions on the Fire Department Board but also inspire a new wave of volunteers dedicated to serving the Cross Hill community.

DESCRIPTION:The Revolutionary War takes on a whole new dimension when the story of Lucy Banbury is told.  The Laurens County Museum’s Revolutionary War Lecture Series continues on Tuesday\, January 30\, 2024\, at 7:00 PM\, with “Freedom Seeker – Lucy Banbury”.  Historic Charleston Foundation Education and Program Manager Carin Bloom will speak on the known details of the extraordinary life of Lucy Banbury who arrived in Charleston on a slave ship.\nAfter her harrowing escape from enslavement in South Carolina\, Banbury joined the Loyalist cause.  She made her way to Canada\, and\, it is even said\, returned to Africa.\nThe Revolutionary War Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Committee and the Laurens County Museum.  There is a $5 suggested donation for those not members of the Museum.  Members and those 18 years old and under are free.\nThe Laurens County Museum is located at 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC.
