SUMMARY:Upstate Pregnancy Center Expands Monthly Diaper Drive-Thru to Meet Increased Demand After Hurricane Helene
DESCRIPTION:In response to the growing needs of families impacted by Hurricane Helene\, the Upstate Pregnancy Center is expanding its monthly Diaper Drive-Thru event in Laurens. Originally scheduled for Tuesday\, October 8\, the center has added a second event on Tuesday\, October 15\, to better serve families affected by extended power outages and loss of work. Both events will take place from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the parking lot of Wattsville Drug (24 Sirrine Street\, Laurens). \n“It’s been a blessing to support other agencies during the aftermath of the storm and to provide emergency supplies to several families referred to us\,” said Brenda Stewart\, Chair of the Upstate Pregnancy Center serving Laurens County. “We’ve expanded this month’s drive-thru with an extra event because we anticipate an increased need\, and we look forward to helping more families in the community.” \nFamilies in need can receive free diapers\, wipes and formula (limited supply) by bringing a parent or guardian’s photo ID and supporting documentation\, such as birth certificates\, WIC or Medicaid cards\, or foster care paperwork. Each eligible family will receive one pack of diapers and wipes per child (up to two children per household). IDs are only required during a family’s first visit. \nSpecial Collaboration with Carolina Pregnancy Center \nThe Upstate Pregnancy Center is also working with the Carolina Pregnancy Center (CPC) from Spartanburg\, which may bring their mobile unit to one of the events. If CPC is able to participate\, they will offer free and confidential pregnancy testing and ultrasounds. Due to storm-related issues with power and access to the mobile unit. \nFor pregnancy testing\, participants must be at least five weeks pregnant and have missed their period by at least five days. Gender reveals will not be offered during these services. \nHow You Can Help \nDue to an overwhelming need in the community\, the Upstate Pregnancy Center is urgently seeking diaper donations\, particularly in larger sizes (3 to 7) and pull-ups. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations: \nSadler Hughes Apothecary in Clinton\nBerkshire Hathaway HomeServices C. Dan Joyner Realtors in Clinton\nSanitary Market in Laurens (124 E Public Square)\nYour support can make a difference for families still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Helene. Every donation counts!

SUMMARY:15th Annual Run Like a Mann 5K Walk and Run Set for October 12th – Registration Now Open
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE – Event cancelled due to conditions of the trails. \nThe Laurens County Cancer Association (LCCA) invites the community to join the 15th Annual Run Like a Mann 5K Run and Walk in memory of Tim Mann\, a beloved friend and community member who lost his battle with cancer. This year’s event will take place on Saturday\, October 12th\, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 1337 Medical Ridge Road in Clinton\, SC. \nTim Mann’s legacy continues to inspire this meaningful event\, with all proceeds directly benefiting LCCA’s Fuel Assistance Program and Prescription Reimbursement initiative. These vital programs help ease the financial burdens for cancer patients in Laurens County\, particularly those who must travel to other cities for treatment\, as no local facilities are available. \n“Cancer patients here in Laurens County often have to travel long distances for their treatments. Our Fuel Assistance Program helps lift some of the burden from these patients\, many of whom face overwhelming costs\,” said Anna Miller\, Director of the LCCA. “Every dollar raised from this event stays right here in our community\, supporting our friends and neighbors who are fighting cancer.” \nWith treatment facilities located in cities like Greenwood\, Greenville\, and Charleston\, patients may need to travel up to five times a week\, depending on their treatment plan. The Run Like a Mann 5K provides a vital opportunity for the local community to rally together in support of these individuals. \nParticipation in the event costs $30\, and those interested can register online at Run Like a Mann Sign-Up. \nThis event continues to be a significant fundraiser for LCCA\, a local non-profit that operates independently of national organizations.

SUMMARY:Lander Emergency Management Professor to Revisit Hurricane Hugo in Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the second installment of the 2024-25 Community Lecture Series Tuesday\, October 22. Dr. Matthew Malone\, associate professor of political science and homeland security at Lander\, will give a lecture commemorating the 35th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nNatural and man-made disasters are a common occurrence in the United States. South Carolina is no stranger to disaster. Since 2014\, the state has experienced twenty federally declared emergencies or disasters. These have included a winter storm\, flooding\, severe storms\, a fire\, COVID-19 and numerous hurricanes. The largest and costliest disaster in South Carolina\, however\, occurred 35 years ago: Hurricane Hugo. \nAt the time\, this was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history\, and it claimed over 60 lives. The country has learned a lot since Hurricane Hugo\, but Malone’s talk will explore whether communities are truly prepared for the next disaster. This lecture uses Hurricane Hugo as a case study to consider how the federal government can assist following a disaster and how individuals can prepare for these events. \nMalone is an associate professor of political science and homeland security\, as well as the program coordinator for the Master of Science in Emergency Management at Lander. He has a B.S. from the University of North Alabama\, an M.A. from the University of Alabama-Huntsville\, and a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy from Auburn University. He previously worked for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency in response and recovery. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Interim Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.
