SUMMARY:Clinton Canopy to Host Second Annual Daffodils for Remembrance Event
DESCRIPTION:Clinton Canopy will hold its second annual Daffodils for Remembrance Event on November 9\, 2024. Community members are invited to gather in the West Main Street Parking area to plant daffodil bulbs in memory of loved ones from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. \nDaffodils\, known for their bright yellow color symbolizing remembrance\, are resilient flowers that return each spring\, representing hope and renewal. This year\, 600 bulbs\, funded by a Community Assistance Grant\, will be available for planting. Clinton Canopy will also have additional bulbs for purchase on-site. \nThose interested can sign up online to receive a free set of bulbs in memory of a loved one. The names of those honored will be listed on Clinton Canopy’s webpage\, and each year\, the daffodils will bloom as a tribute. Participants are encouraged to attend the event and plant their bulbs along the railroad tracks at the intersection of West Main/Carolina Avenue and Broad Street. The best access to the site is through the city parking area on West Main Street. \nFor those unable to attend on November 9th\, Clinton Canopy offers the option to schedule an earlier planting or to have bulbs planted on their behalf. \nLast year’s inaugural event took place on November 11\, 2023\, at Legion Park\, where community members planted daffodils to honor their loved ones. This year\, Clinton Canopy continues the tradition of remembrance\, bringing hope and beauty to the town of Clinton. \nFor more information and to reserve bulbs\, visit Clinton Canopy’s website.\nhttps://www.clintoncanopy.org/daffodils\nhttps://www.clintoncanopy.org/daffodils

SUMMARY:Lander History Professor to Give Community Lecture on South Korea
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the third installment of the 2024-25 Community Lecture Series Tuesday\, November 12. Dr. Franklin Rausch\, professor of history at Lander\, will give a lecture titled “Understanding South Korea.” Rausch’s talk is a sequel to his popular lecture from last year’s series\, “Understanding North Korea.” The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe Republic of Korea (popularly known as South Korea) went from one of the poorest countries in the world following the Korean War (1950 – 1953) to one of the wealthiest. Moreover\, despite its small size\, the ROK has a global reach—an American citizen can drive a KIA while listening to K-Pop using a Samsung phone. \nIn “Understanding South Korea\,” Dr. Rausch will explain why South Korea\, in contrast to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (popularly known as North Korea)\, decided to engage with the global world\, how that engagement led to both economic success and political freedom\, how that combination led to its global reach\, and current problems facing the country today. \nRausch is a Professor of History at Lander University. He earned his M.A. in Asian studies at Indiana University and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada. His research focuses on Korean history\, particularly religion and violence. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.
