DESCRIPTION:The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program\, a division of the South Carolina Department of Children’s Advocacy\, is offering FREE ONLINE TRAINING to those interested in becoming a volunteer Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in LaurensCounty.  The training will provide participants with the tools\, knowledge\, and skills needed to advocate for children’s best interests in the courtroom and throughout their journey through the Family Court system.  There’s no better time to get involved and make a lasting impact on the lives of children in need of advocacy. \nThe ongoing need to protect vulnerable children and provide them with safe\, loving environments is greater than ever. By becoming a GAL volunteer\, individuals can directly contribute to ensuring that children involved in Family Court legal proceedings through the Department of Social Services have a voice through some of the most difficult times of their lives.  So\, take a stand for children who need someone to speak up on their behalf. Join a dedicated group of volunteers who are making a difference every day by advocating for children in the Family Court system. The first in this ten-part series exploring key battles in the Ninety Six District will take place at the museum\, located at 116 South Public Square in Laurens. \nHistorian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will deliver an in-depth presentation titled “The Snow Campaign and the First Siege of Ninety Six.” The Snow Campaign marks the first land engagement in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War and unfolded within 20 miles of present-day Laurens County. \nWhy “The Snow Campaign”?\nFollowing the Patriot victory at the Battle of the Canebrake\, an extraordinary weather event occurred. A massive snowstorm swept through the South Carolina Backcountry\, dumping up to 18 inches of snow—a rare and dangerous accumulation in the region. This unseasonable storm created freezing\, hazardous conditions for both Patriot soldiers and Loyalist prisoners as they made their way back through the Upstate. The brutal weather left a lasting mark on the campaign and gave it its enduring name. \nThe lecture is free for Laurens County Museum members and youth\, with a suggested $5 donation for all others. The event is open to the public and offers a rare opportunity to gain insight into local Revolutionary War history from a renowned expert. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive early and tour the museum’s exhibit hall\, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. SUMMARY:Lander’s Franklin Rausch to Speak on Famous S.C. Revolutionary War Battle
DESCRIPTION:Lander University invites the Greenwood\, Laurens and Lander communities to attend a talk on Tuesday\, Sept. 23\, by Dr. Franklin Rausch\, a history professor at Lander University and a Revolutionary War historian. The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood (120 Main Street). Light refreshment and a cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the lecture will last approximately one hour\, with time for questions. \nDr. Franklin Rausch\, professor of history\, will share his knowledge about battles in South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. His lecture\, titled “The Siege of Savage’s Old Fields\,” focuses on the first battle fought in the state\, which took place between November 19 and November 22 in 1775 near present-day Ninety-Six. Rausch’s lecture will help recognize the battle’s upcoming 250th anniversary\, examining the historical details of the siege\, including battle strategies and war casualties. \nRausch earned his M.A. in Asian studies at Indiana University and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada. He volunteers as a living historian\, usually at Ninety-Six\, where he serves on the cannon crew and uses dioramas to help people better understand the history of the American Revolution. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. SUMMARY:Celebrate “The Path to the US Constitution” at the Laurens County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The journey to adopting a constitution after the Revolutionary War was anything but simple for the founding fathers of the United States. On Tuesday\, September 23\, 2025\, at 7:00 pm\, the Laurens County Museum will host a special lecture exploring that process—and how it continues to shape the nation today. \nHistorian\, re-enactor\, and original document collector Tim Lord will present “The Historical Path to the Constitution and the Information Age.” The program will be divided into two parts. Part 1\, from 7:00–8:00 pm\, will cover The History of the U.S. Constitution. After a short break\, Part 2 will follow with a 30-minute discussion on how the Constitution influenced the early Information Age. \nLord brings a unique perspective\, having retired after 53 years in the Information Technology field. His talk will connect the challenges faced by the nation’s founders with the evolution of communication and information that began more than two centuries ago. \nThe event will be held at the Laurens County Museum\, located at 116 South Public Square in Laurens. Admission is free and open to the public\, though donations are appreciated to support the Museum’s ongoing work. \nVisitors are also reminded that the Museum’s exhibit hall is free to explore Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. After approving the agenda and minutes\, members will turn to two major discussion items: \nReview of Public Input Meetings – The task force will discuss the outcomes of the community input sessions held across Laurens County\, where residents shared concerns and ideas about growth\, development\, and zoning. \nPresentation to County Council – The committee will also continue planning its formal presentation of findings and recommendations to Laurens County Council. \nA public comment period is scheduled toward the end of the meeting\, offering residents another opportunity to voice their thoughts directly to the task force. \nFormed to evaluate land use and zoning issues in Laurens County\, the task force is working to gather community perspectives and craft recommendations that balance growth with preservation of local character. \nThe September 25 meeting is open to the public\, and citizens are encouraged to attend.
