SUMMARY:Lander Professor to Address Homelessness in Upcoming Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Lander University invites the Greenwood and Lander communities to attend the next installment of the Community Lecture Series Tuesday\, Feb. 3\, at the Arts Center of Greenwood (120 Main Street). Dr. Brian Pitman\, assistant professor of criminology at Lander\, will give a presentation titled “A Homeless ‘Crisis’? Understanding the Roots of and Policy Approaches to Homelessness in the U.S.” The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m.\, with light refreshments and a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will last approximately one hour\, with time for questions. \nAbout the Event: \nHomelessness is on the rise in the United States. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that between 2019 and 2023\, the number of people who experienced being unhoused for the first time increased by 23.3 percent. In 2024\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Grants Pass v. Johnson that municipalities banning unhoused people from camping on public property if there are no shelter beds available is not a violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. As a result\, many municipalities have passed ordinances that ban camping on public property. This lecture will explore the roots of homelessness in the United States\, and the effectiveness of these and other policy approaches to address it. \nDr. Brian Pitman is an assistant professor of criminology at Lander University. He has a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke\, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Old Dominion University in Norfolk\, Virginia. Pitman’s research focuses on homelessness\, the history of policing and the socio-economic and health effects of the criminal legal system. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.

Refunds are also available upon request by emailing lcct2022@outlook.com. \nCast members have spent weeks preparing for this colorful underwater adventure\, and the production team hopes the community will come out next weekend to support the talented young performers bringing this beloved story to life on stage.

SUMMARY:Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clinton to Host Community-Wide Mission Conference
DESCRIPTION:Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clinton will host a Mission Conference February 13–15\, inviting the Clinton community and surrounding area to learn more about local and global mission work through a series of speakers and presentations. The conference is open to the public. \n“Our hope is that this conference helps people see how God is at work both around the world and right here in our own community\,” said Chad Reynolds\, senior pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. “You don’t have to be a missionary to be involved in the ministry of missions. Hearing firsthand about the work missionaries are doing helps connect our local community to what God is doing around the world.” \nThe conference opens Friday\, February 13\, at 6:30 p.m. with a keynote presentation by Frank Sindler of Equipping Farmers International (EFI). EFI works with churches in economically challenged regions of the world to strengthen both spiritual and physical sustainability through biblically grounded agricultural training. Their approach helps congregations improve food production\, water stewardship\, and local economies\, allowing families not only to feed themselves but also to support their churches and communities. \nEFI trains local leaders who then equip others in their churches and surrounding communities\, creating a multiplying impact that extends beyond farming into resource management\, market access\, and community development. The ministry also partners with Water for All International to support well-drilling efforts. Sindler’s presentation is expected to be of special interest to farmers and those interested in how faith and practical skills can work together to strengthen communities. \nThe conference continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, beginning with reflections from the Powlisons\, who recently retired after more than 40 years with Mission to the World (MTW)\, followed by recognition of the Powlisons and Debbie Richards\, a recently retired MTW missionary to Japan. Lunch will be provided at noon. \nSaturday afternoon features brief virtual updates from missionaries serving overseas\, including Adair Evans in Munich\, Germany\, who works with Perlentor\, a safe house for trafficked women\, and the Knowltons\, who serve in Edinburgh\, Scotland. Attendees will also hear from Campus Outreach missionaries\, including the Ledfords\, Westminster’s resident Campus Outreach team serving Presbyterian College\, along with members of the church’s International Student Ministry. \nThe conference concludes Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. Sunday School session featuring Andrew Hane and his Spanish-language ministry at Mt. Calvary PCA\, followed by worship at 10:45 a.m.\, where Frank Sindler will preach. \nCommunity members are welcome to attend any of the public sessions. Additional information and Saturday lunch registration details are available through Westminster Presbyterian Church\, located at 1387 SC-56 Truck\, Clinton\, SC 29325. Those planning to attend the Saturday lunch are encouraged to register by February 11th\, by emailing the church at penny.greer@wmpres.com or calling office at 864-833-1275 during office hours\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to noon.
