SUMMARY:City of Laurens to host public workshop on animal and livestock ordinance
DESCRIPTION:The City of Laurens will hold a community workshop Tuesday\, Sept. 1\, to gather resident input on proposed updates to the city’s animal and livestock regulations. \nThe workshop begins at 3 p.m. in the Police Training Room at 250 West Laurens Street. The city is promoting the session under the banner “Let’s Talk\,” describing it as an opportunity for residents to weigh in before the ordinance moves forward. \nAt issue is Ordinance 26-07-02\, which would amend Chapter 10 of the city’s code of ordinances. The proposed changes address regulations governing animals\, livestock\, poultry\, backyard hens\, animal enclosures and animal-related nuisances. Laurens City Council unanimously approved first reading of the ordinance in July. \nThe proposal has drawn considerable interest across the community\, particularly from residents who keep backyard hens or small numbers of livestock inside the city limits. \nMayor Nathan Senn addressed some of those questions at the July council meeting\, confirming that city residents are permitted to keep up to six chickens. Senn said the update is aimed less at whether residents may keep chickens and more at sanitary conditions and whether animals are creating a nuisance for neighbors. He noted that the previous ordinance prohibited only swine and offered little detail on how animals must be kept or enclosed\, a gap the amended language is intended to close. \nSenn\, who has kept chickens himself and grew up on a farm outside of town\, told council he supports residents keeping backyard poultry. \nTuesday’s workshop is designed as a conversation rather than a formal public hearing. Residents who keep animals\, those who have raised concerns about neighboring properties\, and anyone with questions about how the proposed rules would apply are encouraged to attend. \nCity officials have made the invitation a plain one\, asking residents to join them and share their views.

SUMMARY:Lights on the Lake
DESCRIPTION:Connect Lake Greenwood is expanding its signature end-of-summer celebration this year\, adding a free family festival to the front end of the annual Lights on the Lake fireworks show. \nThe Lights on the Lake Family Festival and Fireworks is set for Saturday\, Sept. 5\, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at Fellowship Camp & Conference Center\, 457 Camp Fellowship Road in Waterloo. Admission is free. The rain date is Sunday\, Sept. 6. \nThe festival is new for 2026. In past years\, the event centered on music and the fireworks display over the water. This year\, organizers have built several hours of family activities into the schedule before the first shell goes up\, with community exhibits\, food vendors and interactive experiences spread across the festival grounds. \nPlanned activities include face painting by local EMS personnel\, inflatable bounce and slide fun\, a street team from Big Air\, family games\, a touch-a-truck display featuring a fire truck and a patrol car\, DJ music and dancing led by Art Youngblood\, and a tribute honoring active-duty service members. College football will be shown on big screens under the pavilion. Food vendors will be on site\, and beer\, wine and mocktails will be available for purchase from Break on the Lake. \nThe fireworks are scheduled to launch at 8:45 p.m. over Lake Greenwood\, with the show simulcast through radio partners WSSL 100.5 and iHeartMedia in Greenville. \nGuests may arrive by land or by boat. Paid parking is available at Fellowship Camp & Conference Center\, and organizers said all parking proceeds go directly to the camp’s ministry. Both the shoreline and the water offer views of the display. \nBoaters are asked to follow all South Carolina boating laws\, observe the no-wake zone north of the railroad trestle\, follow directions from law enforcement and event personnel\, and operate their vessels responsibly. \nConnect Lake Greenwood is an all-volunteer organization of businesses\, residents and area chambers of commerce that works to promote Lake Greenwood and host events along its shoreline. The group has produced Lights on the Lake for more than a decade\, growing it into one of the Lakelands’ largest free community gatherings. \nFireworks costs continue to climb\, and the organization is accepting donations at four levels: Sparkler at $50\, Firecracker at $100\, Roman Candle at $150 and BOOM! at $200 and above. Every donor is entered to win prizes from participating local businesses. \nThis year’s sunset sponsors are Gunnells Marine and Shonna Lee with Acopia Home Loans. Lake life sponsors include Rush Heating & Air\, Self Regional Healthcare and Lakelands Realty. Community sponsors are Break on the Lake and Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission. Friends of Lights on the Lake include Atkins Data & Communications\, Chaney Heating & Air\, Duke Energy\, Fish Bonz General Store & Tackle\, Olde Eight\, Pellegrino Ventures\, Sadler-Hughes Apothecary and Town & Country Property Management. \nMore information\, including weather updates and donation details\, is available at connectlakegreenwood.org or by email at connectlakegreenwood@gmail.com. Connect Lake Greenwood also posts updates on Facebook\, Instagram and X.

SUMMARY:Join Us for "Living with Cancer"
DESCRIPTION:We had a BIG night at our LCCA “Living with Cancer” support group! \nWe are so excited to celebrate our biggest turnout yet\, with 30 people in attendance! What started as a support group is growing into something so much more: a community where people can come together\, share\, listen\, learn\, and know they are not alone. \nWe were incredibly grateful to have two wonderful guest speakers\, India Jones and Carolyn Roberts\, who shared their time\, knowledge\, and encouragement about caregiving with our group. And a huge thank you to the Knights of Columbus for providing dinner for everyone! Your generosity helped make the evening extra special. \nAt the LCCA\, we are proud to provide assistance to those facing cancer\, but we are even more thankful that we are building a community of support\, friendship\, compassion\, and love for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer. \nThank you to everyone who came\, shared\, listened\, and helped make this night so meaningful. This is what community looks like. \nPlease consider joining us for our next meeting on September 10th\, when we will have Brenna Abrams from the Joanna Lions Club.

SUMMARY:9/11 Hero Walk
DESCRIPTION:Clinton residents will gather early on the morning of Sept. 11 to walk in remembrance of the lives lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks. \nThe 9/11 Hero Walk\, organized by Jay and Janice Long of CrossFit864\, begins at 7 a.m. at the M.S. Bailey Municipal Center\, 211 N. Broad St. Participants are asked to bring a flag and join the group as it walks through downtown Clinton. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Walkers of all ages are welcome\, and no registration is required. \n“We do this so nobody forgets\,” Jay Long said. “There are kids in this town who weren’t born yet in 2001. When they see their neighbors out here carrying flags at seven in the morning\, they start to understand what that day cost.” \nThe walk falls on the 25th anniversary of the attacks\, which killed nearly 3\,000 people at the World Trade Center in New York\, at the Pentagon in Arlington\, Virginia\, and aboard United Flight 93 near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. Among the dead were 343 New York City firefighters\, 37 Port Authority officers and 23 New York City police officers who went into the towers as others were coming out. \n“It isn’t a race and it isn’t a workout\,” Janice Long said. “It’s a walk. Anybody can do it\, and everybody is welcome.” \nOrganizers point to a passage from Psalm 46 in describing the purpose of the morning: “God is our refuge and strength\, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear.” \nTwo words continue to anchor the observance in Clinton and across the country: Never forget.

SUMMARY:GSP for veterans’ Honor Flight homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Ninety South Carolina veterans will fly from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport to Washington\, D.C.\, on Wednesday\, Sept. 16\, for a special Honor Flight\, and Upstate Warrior Solution is asking the community to be waiting when they get back. \nThe veterans will spend the day visiting the national memorials built in recognition of their service and sacrifice. Their return that evening is where the Upstate comes in. \nOrganizers are asking residents to gather at GSP at 7:30 p.m. to give the group a homecoming worth remembering. Veterans\, families\, students\, business owners\, civic clubs\, churches\, first responders and neighbors from across the region are all invited\, including residents of Laurens County and the Golden Strip. Attendees are encouraged to bring American flags. \nThe welcome carries particular weight for the Vietnam veterans making the trip. Many of them came home more than 50 years ago to silence or worse\, without the gratitude their service had earned. \n“For a lot of these men and women\, this is the welcome home they never got\,” said Nicole Anderson\, a Marine Corps veteran and warrior advocate with Upstate Warrior Solution. “We cannot go back and change what happened when they landed the first time. What we can do is show up on Sept. 16 and get it right.” \nUpstate Warrior Solution\, based in Greenville\, connects veterans\, first responders and their families to resources across the Upstate. The organization has helped coordinate community turnout for Honor Flight returns before\, and staff members said the response tends to surprise the veterans stepping off the plane. \n“They walk through those doors expecting a quiet airport\, and instead there are hundreds of people clapping and waving flags\,” said Rick Palmer\, who retired from the Navy and now serves as senior development officer for Upstate Warrior Solution. “It takes about 10 seconds for the whole thing to become emotional. You can see it hit them.” \nPalmer said no ticket or registration is required. Families are welcome to bring children\, and organizers noted that student groups\, scout troops and church congregations have all turned out for past homecomings. \nThose planning to attend should allow extra time for parking and for reaching the arrivals area before the flight lands. \nMore information about Upstate Warrior Solution and its programs is available at upstatewarriorsolution.org.

SUMMARY:Taste of Laurens
DESCRIPTION:Main Street Laurens will host Taste of Laurens on Friday\, Sept. 25\, from 6 to 9 p.m.\, an evening built around the food\, businesses and people that give the city its character. \nThe event centers on the Taste of Laurens Passport\, which gives ticket holders access to participating businesses in and around the Square. Each stop will offer a signature bite\, sample\, drink\, shopping special\, activity or experience\, giving guests a range of ways to spend the evening. \n“This is a night to discover what’s right here at home\,” said Brad Abercrombie\, director of Main Street Laurens. “One passport gets you into shops and restaurants you may walk past every day\, and by the end of the evening you have tasted\, shopped and experienced a whole side of Laurens you might not have seen before.” \nParticipation is not limited to the Square. Businesses from across Laurens are bringing their offerings downtown for the night\, and organizers are still welcoming additional participants. \n“We have businesses from all over the county coming in to set up around the Square\, and we are still adding to the list\,” Abercrombie said. “Grab your friends\, make it a date night or bring the whole family. There are so many ways to experience it.” \nThe format is designed to work for a variety of groups\, and one passport covers multiple stops throughout the three hours. \nTickets are on sale now at $25 per person and are available online through the Main Street Laurens website\, mainstreetlaurens.org.
