SUMMARY:The Artist in the Archive: The Art-Science Discoveries of Kirsten Stolle
DESCRIPTION:Join the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston for a lecture by the “Only You Can Prevent A Forest” exhibition essayist Hannah Star Rogers centered on the intersection of art and science in the work of Kirsten Stolle. \nHannah Star Rogers is an Art and Science Studies scholar\, curator\, and poet. She received her Ph.D. at Cornell University in Science & Technology Studies\, where her research concerned the intersection of art and science\, particularly critiques of science in contemporary art. She explores the question of how art and science work as categories to circumscribe bodies of knowledge. She is currently a Visiting Scholar in Science\, Technology\, and Innovation Studies (STIS) at the University of Edinburgh and lectures at the University of Virginia’s Engineering and Society department. \nUsing appropriation\, wordplay\, and humor\, Kirsten Stolle co-opts advertising strategies used by agrichemical corporations to resurface and critique company history. For her exhibition\, Stolle has created photo-based collages\, visual poetry interventions\, text-based sound animation\, a neon wall piece\, and her first site-responsive sculptural installation. \nBuilding upon her decade-long research into companies like Bayer/Monsanto and Dow Chemical\, the work will forefront historical ties to chemical warfare and reveal persistent greenwashing. Stolle’s work interrogates the global influence of chemical companies on our food supply and their consistent efforts to downplay effects of their toxic products on our health and environment.

SUMMARY:MILES AHEAD: Musings for Miles Davis featuring Sean Jones
DESCRIPTION:As one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz\, Miles Davis shaped the course of modern improvisational music more than a half-dozen times over his fifty-year career\, becoming the standard bearer for successive generations of musicians. After receiving two Miles Davis albums (Kind of Blue and Tutu)\, Sean Jones developed an interest in jazz music. Years later\, Jones says\, “Davis’s overall vision\, the way he changed with the times\, the purity of the sound is probably the single most powerful influence on me as an artist.” On October 15\, 2022\, join your Charleston Jazz Orchestra for MILES AHEAD featuring Sean Jones. \nSean Jones is a musical chameleon and is comfortable in any musical setting no matter what the role or the genre. Sean has been prominently featured with a number of artists\, recording and/or performing with many major figures in jazz\, including Illinois Jacquet\, Jimmy Heath\, Frank Foster\, Nancy Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. Sean was selected by Miller\, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles tour in 2011. Your CJO is excited to welcome trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer and educator\, Sean Jones for a Miles Davis tribute Charleston Jazz style. See you on October 15 for Miles Ahead featuring Sean Jones! \nTWO SETS: 5PM + 8PM
