DESCRIPTION:Firefly Distillery is hosting its first lowcountry boil event on Sunday\, May 7th from 12-3 p.m. The Southern celebration will feature a lowcountry boil made by critically acclaimed Chef Graham Calabria\, onsite music by DJ Kevin Breeze\, and craft cocktails served until 4 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available now and should be purchased in advance. \nGraham Calabria has quickly emerged as one of Charleston’s premier chefs\, blending his Southern roots\, heritage\, and eclectic culinary background to create exceptional experiences. The distillery teamed up with Chef Graham’s Calabria’s Fine Foods and Lowcountry Oyster Co. for its seasonal oyster roast series\, and is partnering with the chef again to bring his innovative and unique flavors to this event. Tickets are only required to indulge in the lowcountry boil and will include a one-gallon bucket for $35. \nIn addition to the lowcountry boil\, Chef Graham Calabria has partnered with Lowcountry Oyster Company to offer oysters on the halfshell with all the accouterments for guests to purchase. Visitors can also purchase fare from local food truck Chicken Fats and James Brown’s Famous Boiled Peanuts\, as well as beer and soft drinks from satellite bars. \nOpen to the public\, this outdoor event will feature Firefly cocktails and spirits\, along with a full Bloody Mary bar for guests to sip on while enjoying the beautiful spring weather in the Lowcountry. Guests can bring their own chairs and blankets to spread out on the field\, but pets\, coolers\, tents\, and outside food and drink are not allowed.

SUMMARY:Proposals to Reduce Gun Violence\, a discussion with local leaders
DESCRIPTION:Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in South Carolina and in the United States. \nOn Sunday\, May 7\, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the College of Charleston\, leaders from different political persuasions\, elected officials and the public will come together to discuss community-generated proposals to reduce gun violence in our state. \nFounded in 2019 by local activist Butch Kennedy\, the Tri-County Gun Violence Coordinating Council (GVCC)\, a gun-violence prevention group based in North Charleston\, works with members of the community to galvanize every possible resource to prevent\, intervene\, investigate and suppress gun violence. Jennifer Baker\, College of Charleston philosophy professor has been working with the GVCC and conducting forums says\, “The previous forums\, where the ideas being presented this Sunday were generated\, included hearing from decision-makers\, gun owners\, and also victims of gun violence\, so the ideas that have been generated have come from a really special mix of perspectives. It’s been amazing to see a community come together and try to solve a problem like this.” \nSponsored by the College of Charleston’s Department of Philosophy and the GVCC\, the event on Sunday will include speakers such as Dr. Ashley Hink of the MUSC Department of Surgery\, Division of Trauma\, Burn & Surgical Critical Care and Medical Director of MUSC’s Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program\, RezSaun Lewis\, Executive Director of Low Country Youth Services\, Krystle Mathews Former SC State Representative 117th district and other local leaders. \nOpen to the public \n
