SUMMARY:Town Theatre's The Play That Goes Wrong
DESCRIPTION:The show runs January 27 to February 12 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. \nDon’t miss the comedy hit – The Play That Goes Wrong. This play-within-a-play is often called a “hilarious hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes.” Allow us to set the stage… \nIt’s opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor\, a production of the Cornley Drama Society. Things are not going according to plan. With a corpse who can’t play dead\, an unconscious leading lady and accident-prone actors who fall over everything (including their lines)\, the show is quickly moving from bad to disastrous. \n“Breaking legs” in our production is an array of Town veterans and newcomers. Chip Collins (Million Dollar Quartet\, 42nd Street) plays the head of the drama society but also stars in the play-within-a-play which he directed. Overachiever. Castmates include Michael Seezen (Willy Wonka\, Elf: The Musical) as a bumbling butler\, Bill Bentley (The Music Man\, Jekyll & Hyde) playing the loyal\, old school chum\, and Von Huber (in his Town debut) taking on a duo of supporting roles. The play’s leading lady is taken by Katie Mixon (also making her first appearance at Town). And what’s a show without a technical team? David Fichter (in his inaugural Town appearance) serves as the light and sound operator\, Zanna Mills (Bright Star\, Big Fish) is the company stage manager with Leah Tudor (The Red Velvet Cake War\, Joseph…) Corey Langley (Matilda\, Baskerville)\, Adiah Anderson (The Addams Family: School Edition) and Katelyn Oliver (in her first Town appearance) as the show’s run crew. And then there’s the dead body aptly portrayed (or perhaps not) by Nathan Dawson (Baskerville\, Bright Star). \nIf it can go wrong\, it will go wrong. But\, in the end\, this chaotic mess is sure to leave the audience in stitches. \nThe show runs January 27 to February 12 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. \nThe Play That Goes Wrong is directed by Jamie Harrington\, costumes by Jillian Bigony\, set design by Corey Langley and stage management by Chelsey Art. The show is sponsored by South State Bank and Total Comfort.

SUMMARY:SwordFest 2023
DESCRIPTION:Just when you thought it was safe to go out without your sword and shield\, SwordFest is back\, yet again\, at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. \nCome on out – admission is free. SwordFest 2023 starts at 10 a.m. and runs until at least 3 p.m. on Saturday\, Feb. 11. \nThe peace of our city will again be disturbed by clanging and swishing of every kind imaginable – and for the sixth time! And if you’ve been to SwordFest before\, you know this isn’t your average historical uprising of swordfighters. It’s more like every kind of bladed weaponry all coming at you at once. But without harmful intent\, of course. \nThis year\, the annual event will feature the following\, and more: \n\nThe Roman IX Legion will be there\, with each legionnaire of the re-enactment group wielding his own gladius or spatha.\nIaido\, the Japanese art of sword-drawing\, will be demonstrated\, thanks to Dan Bernardo of WellWithin in Columbia.\nYou’ll be able to see how Wade Hampton’s 19th-century South Carolina cavalrymen used their sabers.\nAnd fiction – science fiction – will mix with history\, when the Aiken Saber Club demonstrates how it was hypothetically done a long time ago\, in a galaxy far\, far away – with lightsabers.\nThe Aikido group will show you how Japanese swordsmen can be disarmed – which might come in handy someday.\nGentlemen in shining armor will appear\, known as the Palmetto Knights Steel Combat Team.\nAnd something new: practitioners of Kendo\, a fast-moving modern sport practiced in protective gear with bamboo swords.\nAnd of course\, as always\, kids will have the chance to practice their own techniques – with safe “swords” made of foam\, of course.\nYou’ll also be able to see the real\, historical thing\, by checking out the swords in the museum’s extensive collection.\n\nAnd more\, as we said – the schedule is still growing as the event approaches. And it’s all free! \nSo is admission to the museum itself – which makes this a prime opportunity to visit our major new exhibit\, “A War With No Front Lines: South Carolina and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1973.” It fills the 2\,500-square-foot Cistern gallery with artifacts and stories brought back by veterans from our state. Whether you’ve seen it before or not\, it’s worth coming to learn more about your neighbors’ experiences in that faraway\, bitter conflict. \nFor more information\, go to https://crr.sc.gov/.

SUMMARY:Lecture on the Battle of Firebase Ripcord
DESCRIPTION:As visitors approach the entrance of the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum\, the first thing they see is a huge diorama of Fire Support Base Ripcord\, depicting in meticulous detail the site of the very last major battle the U.S. Army experienced during the Vietnam War. \nCraig Van Hout likes to visit the diorama. But when he sees other museum visitors “basically do a 60-second walk-by\, I want to say get back here!” He wants them to take it in completely\, and understand what happened at Ripcord. \nHe knows\, because he was there\, with his comrades of the 506th Regiment\, 101st Airborne Division – too many of whom never made it home. He will talk about the experience in a free lecture at noon on Friday\, Feb. 24\, at the Relic Room. Those who attend can broaden their knowledge of the war further after the program by visiting the major new exhibit that fills the museum’s Cistern Gallery – “A War With No Front Lines: South Carolina and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1973.” \nThe battle Craig Van Hout and the other American soldiers fought at Ripcord is remembered as one of the bloodiest of the war. They lost 139 killed. Four hundred were wounded in the month of July alone. Three Medals of Honor and six Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded to men who were there that month. \nThe last night\, just before Craig’s unit had to abandon the base\, was the worst. Alpha company fought a running battle against North Vietnamese regulars – NVA – on another hill nearby. Fourteen of them were killed\, and 56 were wounded. When it was over\, “only 10 men walked back into the company area at Camp Evans.” \nThe next day\, Craig and his team were ordered to lay down a field of fire as the helicopters came in to evacuate them from Ripcord. That’s when he was hit by an enemy mortar round. He was seriously wounded\, and not for the first time. He had multiple piece of shrapnel in his skull. He went around looking for help\, but all the medics had already been flown out. It took him three days to get treated in an actual hospital because “the hospitals were full.” \nAfter he went home\, Craig never went back to Vietnam. But he’s thought a lot about it\, and not just about the guys who fought on his own side. He wonders what it was like for “some poor North Vietnamese guy who walked all the way down the Ho Chi Minh Trail” carrying five heavy artillery rounds on his back – either on bicycle or walking. He hand-carried those shells into the mountains\, to the NVA artillery position. Craig contemplates the contrast to what he experienced at Ripcord\, an artillery base where all the ammunition was flown in by helicopter. \nThen\, Craig imagines how before the North Vietnamese guy even turned around to leave\, “Those five rounds had been fired at Ripcord.” At him and his buddies\, killing so many of them. \nCraig survived\, and lives in Columbia today. He’s glad to be able to tell the story to fellow Americans who weren’t there – especially since when it happened\, nobody back home heard about it. \nA year earlier\, at another hill there in the A Shau valley\, soldiers of the 101st had also sustained heavy losses. It became the subject of a Hollywood movie you may have seen\, or at least heard of – “Hamburger Hill.” \nRipcord fell at a time when the Nixon administration wasn’t talking much about battles and losses. Consequently\, “Nobody ever heard of Ripcord” back in the States\, says Craig. \nBut they can come hear him tell the story now. \n  \nFor more information\, go to https://crr.sc.gov/.
