SUMMARY:ArtFields Extended: Arts Center of Kershaw County
DESCRIPTION:This August the Arts Center is proud to welcome our newest exhibition to the Bassett Gallery. ArtFields Extended: Arts Center of Kershaw County. \nArtFields started in 2013 with a simple goal: honor the artists of the Southeast with a week’s worth of celebration and competition in the heart of a traditional Southern small town. With over $145\,000 in cash prizes each year\, the competition empowers hundreds of contemporary Southern artists to create dazzling new works. As a part of that competition\, over 400 works of art are displayed annually across Lake City\, South Carolina. Many artists enter the competition\, and some will earn an award – but only the grand prize winner is added to the ArtFields permanent collection each year. \nA cross-section of some of the best art produced in the Southeast\, ArtFields Extended: Arts Center of Kershaw County features a selection of incredible works from the permanent collection. Each work captures a piece of the time\, place\, and social context in which it was created\, serving as a powerful testament to the incredible talent and perspective of Southern artists. \nGallery Exhibition: August 24 – September 23\nOpen to the public M-F 10:00am-5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music at Town Theatre
DESCRIPTION:“Let’s start at the very beginning… a very good place to start!” Don’t miss the kickoff to Town Theatre’s 104th season with The Sound of Music. When postulant Maria Rainer proves too high-spirited for the religious life\, she is sent to serve as a governess for the seven von Trapp children. Her rapport grows with the children as she encourages them to put aside their uniforms and marching for a life filled with music and love. Her fondness also grows for their father\, a widowed Captain\, which leaves Maria to struggle between her calling to become a Nun and her desire to be a wife. \nAt the ship’s helm is Tracy Steele (Elf\, A Christmas Story) as Captain Georg von Trapp. Following his military-like family rules\, or so he thinks\, are his seven children (actually 14 with this production’s dual casts of children). Molly Adams\, Gemma Burkett\, Mary Jayne Davis\, Hudson Freeman\, Carly Grosse\, Zachary Hammond\, Olivia Hite\, Benjamin McIver\, Porsha Owen\, Brooke Rowe\, Emily Smith\, Lacie Walko\, Sadie Way and Jackson Wright alternate as stars of the Von Trapp brood. \nThe role of Maria is taken by Ivy Munnerlyn (24 Hour Musical). Town newcomer Becky Loar brings wisdom and guidance as the Mother Abbess with Ashley Alvarado (Jekyll & Hyde) and Joel Yarborough (The Music Man) adding dimension as the filthy rich baroness Elas Schraeder and greedy Uncle Max. \nTown is certainly alive with The Sound of Music! \nThe show runs September 8-24 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. Tickets go on sale to the public Monday\, August 28. Visit towntheatre.com for details. \nThe Sound of Music is directed by Jane Cato\, with musical direction by Michael Simmons and choreography by Katie Hilliger Page. Billy Bishop serves as costumer with set design by Bob Branham\, light design by Jeremy Hansard and stage management from Chelsey Art. The Sound of Music is generously sponsored by Bilt Rite Overhead Garage Door and Willis Tax & Accounting.

SUMMARY:Columbia’s 8th Annual Park(ing) Day
DESCRIPTION:PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens\, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.   The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space\, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated\, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat… at least until the meter runs out! \nWe are excited to announce that the City of Columbia\, in partnership with the South Carolina Chapter of the American Society for Landscape Architects and One Columbia for Arts and History\, is again helping to facilitate PARK(ing) Day\, a national event that takes place on Friday\, September 15th. This event is about reclaiming on-street parking spaces as public space for people\, for one day out of the year (10AM- 4PM). \nIt will be fun. \nThis year\, PARK(ing) Day will be extra playful – parklet hosts were asked to include a game or games in their parklet design! \nAnd we want you to join in. \nPARK(ing) Day is about designing open space that not only attracts but also engages the community through the physical design of the space itself.  This year\, applicants have developed designs for a number of parklets\, all to be built for public enjoyment.  Mark your calendars and make plans to visit each parklet on September 15th between 10am-4pm (a map will be made available here: www.columbiacompass.org/parklets) . \nAnd you can vote on your favorite design. \n This year\, the PARK(ing) Day design contests are back – a People’s Choice Award\, and a juried Best Design Award.  Winners get bragging rights\, as well as some fun\, locally-sourced\, prizes.  Based on PARK(ing) Days past\, we know the competition will be steep – so make sure you check out all of the parklets before casting your vote! \nTo learn more\, visit www.columbiacompass.org/parklets.  If you have questions regarding the PARK(ing) Day\, contact Planning and Development Services Department at 803-545-3222 or via email at parkingday@columbiasc.gov.  For information on the international PARK(ing) Day movement\, see https://www.asla.org/parkingday2023.aspx.
