SUMMARY:The Art of Influence at The Nick
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate exhibition Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous in its closing days at the Columbia Museum of Art\, The Nick teams up with the museum for a two-part film series exploring creative connections behind some of McQueen’s most iconic looks on the runway. As visitors to the exhibition can see\, McQueen took inspiration from many aspects of popular culture for his designs and runway shows\, and that is especially true when it comes to popular films. \nGather at The Nick Wednesday\, January 10\, for a screening of the first film\, Blade Runner (1982)\, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford. This iconic film’s influence on McQueen is evident in his designs for Givenchy’s Autumn/Winter 1999 Collection and its accompanying fashion show\, where models donned the trademark pinup “bumper bang” hairstyle and shoulder-padded outfits mimicking the looks famously worn by Sean Young’s character Racheal. After the screening\, stay for a 30-minute talkback with Carleen Maur\, USC assistant professor of media arts\, and Glenna Barlow\, CMA curator of education. \nThen on Wednesday\, January 17\, there will be a screening of the second and final film in the series\, Stanley Kubrick’s classic The Shining (1980)\, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. This iconic film’s influence on McQueen is evident in the designs for his eponymous label’s Autumn/Winter 1999 Collection\, The Overlook — named for the hotel in the film — and in the snow-covered catwalks of its runway show. After the screening\, stay for a 30-minute talkback with Dr. Julia Elliott\, USC professor of women’s and gender studies — whose current research and teaching interests include horror films — and Jackie Adams\, CMA director of art and learning and in-house curator of Rendez-Vous. \nTickets are $15 / $12 for Nick and CMA members. The member code is “mcqueen3” for $3 off. \nTickets and details: https://nickelodeon.org/series/the-art-of-influence/

SUMMARY:Moon Over Buffalo at Town Theatre
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1953 in Buffalo where actors\, George and Charlotte Hay\, are fading faster than a New York minute. Their struggle to keep their name in lights has them performing Cyrano de Bergerac and Private Lives in tandem on the repertory theatre circuit. If fighting for their professional survival wasn’t enough\, their marriage is on a downward slope. And\, making matters even more desperate\, their daughter is soon to marry outside of the land of thespians as she is engaged to\, of all walks of life\, a WEATHER MAN. There seems to be a break in the storm\, however\, when word arrives that a Hollywood director is coming to see their performances. Will the band of performers be able to change their course? \nTaking the stage as George and Charlotte Hay are Town’s own version of the Lunts\, are Bill DeWitt (Baskerville\, White Christmas) and Kathy Hartzog (Driving Miss Daisy\, Always… Patsy Cline). Colorful characters joining the Hays in the green room of the Erlanger Theatre include Charlotte’s hard of hearing mother\, Ethel\, taken by Karen Herschell (The Red Velvet Cake War\, My Fair Lady). Their daughter Rosalind\, former actress-seeking-a- “real-world-job\,” is played by Allison Allgood (The Game’s Afoot\, A Christmas Carol). She is engaged to David LaTorre (The Wizard of Oz\, Bright Star)\, the rather nervous and excitable forecaster. Company manager Paul\, who happens to be in love with Rosalind\, is portrayed by Joel Yarborough (Mamma Mia\, Spamalot). What farce would be complete without a little scandal? Ours is courtesy of the ingénue Eileen\, taken by Zanna Mills (The Play That Goes Wrong\, The Music Man) and the Hay’s lawyer\, Richard\, in the hands of Steve Reeves (The Odd Couple\, Arsenic and Old Lace). \nIf you enjoy a good belly laugh\, Moon Over Buffalo is sure to hit the mark. If you’re an actor\, have even been on the stage\, or one day aspire to take a turn on the boards\, then you’ll love it even more. This comedy classic represents (some) of the ridiculousness of those entrenched in the world of theatre. \nThe show runs January 19-28 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. Visit towntheatre.com for details. \nMoon Over Buffalo is directed by Allison McNeely. Dell Goodrich serves as costumer with set design by Bob Branham\, light design by Jeremy Hansard and stage management from Kerry McGregor. The show is generously sponsored by Genesis Studios and Total Comfort Solutions.
