SUMMARY:Cinematic Lives at The Nick
DESCRIPTION:Join The Nick and the Columbia Museum of Art for a two-part series exploring themes in the CMA exhibition Interior Lives: Modern American Spaces\, 1890–1945. See two films from the 1940s\, Citizen Kane and Meet Me in St. Louis\, followed by talkbacks featuring CMA Senior Curator Michael Neumeister\, who created the exhibition\, and Laura Major\, collections manager at USC’s Moving Image Research Collections. \nOn April 2\, gather at The Nick for a screening of Citizen Kane (1941\, Orson Welles)\, long regarded as one of the best American films of all time. It follows the mystery of Charles Foster Kane’s tragic death through interviews and flashbacks spanning from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Famous for its groundbreaking cinematography\, the film employed the use of deep focus\, an innovation where foreground\, midground\, and background all remained in focus. This technique allowed the filmmaker to highlight the various interior spaces that Kane inhabited throughout his life\, from his modest childhood home to his ostentatious final abode\, Xanadu. \nOn April 15\, gather at The Nick for a screening of the Judy Garland classic Meet Me in St. Louis (1944\, Vincent Minelli)\, a film that follows the everyday lives of the Smiths\, an upper middle-class family living in St. Louis at the turn of the 20th century. Much of the story takes place in the interior spaces of the Smith’s Victorian home\, where the four Smith sisters navigate love\, life\, and family in an ever-changing America. The film also displays many of the technological advances leading up to the 1904 World’s Fair. \nTickets are $15 / $12 for Nick and CMA members with discount code ‘member3’. DESCRIPTION:Tickets On Sale Now for Electrifying Extravaganza Melding Oktoberfest with Circus \nGermany’s Great Bavarian Circus makes its Columbia\, SC\, debut at the SC State Fairgrounds from April 5-21. Tickets are on sale now for this electrifying extravaganza that melds the vibrant essence of Oktoberfest with the captivating allure of the circus. The Columbia stop is part of its much-anticipated\, 18-city\, North American debut tour. \nProducers and brothers Benjamin and David Spindler\, 9th generation of one of Germany’s most illustrious circus dynasties\, infuse the show with authentic details from their home country. The excitement begins the moment guests enter the bier hall\, serving up German delights such as pretzels\, sausages\, potato pancakes and a selection of the finest Bavarian beers. A resplendent maypole adorned with colorful ribbons greets guests as they enter the Big Top tent\, setting the stage for the celebratory opening number with the performers in traditional Bavarian costumes. \nGermany’s Great Bavarian Circus features an award-winning European cast who take center stage to dazzle and amaze\, bringing gasps and laughter to the crowd in acts set to a mix of German music and current hits. Performers on silks\, the trapeze and straps fly through the air\, defying gravity. Dexterous jugglers\, flipping trampoliners and acrobatic balancers showcase their athletic prowess in the ring\, while presentations of spirited goats and loveable dachshunds bring happy smiles to all. Clowns will have the audiences roaring with laughter\, performing throughout the show\, often inviting members of the audience on stage. \nThis tour is the realization of a long-held dream of Max Spindler\, Benjamin and David’s father. After a visit to the U.S. with his sons\, Max was inspired to introduce their family circus and its rich history to the audiences of America. With a legacy that spans more than 100 years of performing\, the cast and crew of Germany’s Great Bavarian Circus includes 13 members of the Spindler family\, who are an indomitable part of circus history\, bridging the past and present. \nThere’s something for everyone in this unforgettable journey into the heart of German tradition and fun.
