Listening to The Boxmasters\, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles\, Byrds and Beach Boys\, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and Big Star. \nSeveral long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band\, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been J.D. Andrew and Billy Bob (Bud) Thornton. In celebrating the release of their 17th album\, “Love & Hate In Desperate Places\,” The Boxmasters are back on tour with their signature blend of 60s rock and fresh\, heavier sounds featuring longtime road musicians Kirk McKim and Raymond Hardy to the recordings. \n“When we started this album\, we were calling it the ‘Rock Record’ as we were making it.\nWe had some songs that were a bit too heavy to fit on previous records\, and we also wrote songs to have a heavier feel to them. Then when we had most of the songs written\, we had Kirk and Raymond come out to put their parts on them\, which immediately made the record sound more like we sound on the road\,” says J.D. \nDon’t miss your chance to hear new singles like “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” and “Goodnight\, Sleep Tight\, I’m Gone” live\, along with fan favorites. Secure your tickets today for an electrifying night with Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters! \nOpening Act: Capital City Playboys\nAs local favorites\, the Capital City Playboys will kick off the night with their electrifying blend of rock ‘n’ roll\, rockabilly\, and garage rock. Known for their high-energy performances\, they’ve been thrilling fans across the Southeast since 2009. Join us in celebrating one of Columbia’s most cherished rock bands before the main event with Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters! \n

SUMMARY:SC PHILHARMONIC PRESENTS HALLOWEEN AT HOGWARTS UNDER THE BATON OF GUEST CONDUCTOR YURIY BEKKER
DESCRIPTION:Charleston Symphony Artistic Director helms popular family-friendly Halloween concert matinee \nThe South Carolina Philharmonic presents Halloween at Hogwarts on Sunday\, October 27\, 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Koger Center for the Arts. This family-friendly concert matinee will be under the baton of guest conductor Yuriy Bekker – critically acclaimed pops conductor from the Charleston Symphony. The SC Philharmonic will turn the Koger Center into that famous school of witchcraft and wizardry\, with fun activities in the lobby during pre-show. The program includes plenty of music from the popular Harry Potter films\, alongside spooky classical fare like Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain\,” selections from Bernard Herrmann’s Suite from the film Psycho\, and highlights from Stephen Schwartz’ hit Broadway musical\, Wicked.  Tickets may be purchased by visiting scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center Box Office at 803-251-2222. \n \nFor this season’s spooky holiday offering\, the SC Philharmonic has enlisted the talents of conductor Yuriy Bekker. A critically acclaimed violinist and conductor\, Bekker has been a mainstay of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in Charleston\, SC for 15 years. He has recently been named the CSO’s Artistic Director and continues to lead as Concertmaster (2007) and Principal Pops Conductor (2016).  Bekker previously served as the orchestra’s Acting Artistic Director from 2010-2014\, playing a major role in the orchestra’s successful resurgence. In 2011\, Bekker was given the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award from the city of Charleston to honor his cultural contributions to the community. \nThe combination of familiar music from the Harry Potter films with equally recognizable works from the classical cannon continues to make Halloween at Hogwarts an accessible entry point into orchestral music for Midlands families. The SC Phil also collaborates with Steve Borders (longtime Koger Center Technical Director) to elevate the concert with exciting stage lighting that brings the music to life through color and movement. \n \nThis concert furnishes pre-concert family fun in the lobby by providing Hogwarts-themed activities. Audience members can get their very own lighting bolt on their head\, engage and learn about amazing creatures through a partnership with Carolina Wildlife\, or grab one of the “Have You Seen This Wizard?” frames for a photo op with family and friends. Costumes are highly encouraged. \nHalloween at Hogwarts will be presented on Sunday\, October 27\, 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Koger Center for the Arts. This event is in-person only. Tickets range from $25 to $55 in Gryffindor sections. Though the seating sections are named for Hogwarts houses\, audiences do not have to buy tickets in the house that they were assigned to by the sorting hat. Tickets may be purchased at scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center Box Office at 803-251-2222. \nThe South Carolina Philharmonic is committed to performing live symphonic music and providing dynamic educational opportunities in the Midlands. We carry forward a legacy of passion for the music and embrace our responsibility to be a vibrant part of the cultural fabric of our diverse community. \nFor more information about the South Carolina Philharmonic\, please visit SCPhilharmonic.com or follow on Facebook\, Twitter and Instagram. \n

SUMMARY:ReelTalk: Sugarcane at The Nick
DESCRIPTION:The next installment of our ReelTalk: Docuseries features a stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring prominent leaders in Native American communities. \nAbout the film: Sugarcane\, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie\, is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. \nIn 2021\, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence\, the forced separation\, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was brought to light\, sparking a national outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities. Set amidst a groundbreaking investigation\, Sugarcane illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere. \nTickets: https://nickelodeon.org/events/sugarcane/
