SUMMARY:The SCWF Plishing Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Who – Everyone\nWhat – Summer long fishing and litter pick up challenge with prizes\nWhen – June 1-August 31\nWhy – To keep anglers (new and old) engaged and fishing while cleaning up our waterways\nHow – Visit https://scwf.org/plishing for directions \nLet’s go fishing and help clean up our waterways! The South Carolina Wildlife Federation is launching a new initiative called the SCWF Plishing Challenge to encourage people to go fishing and pick up litter this summer. \n“Plishing” is a combination of the Swedish phrase “plocka upp” which means litter pick up\, and fishing. Anglers new and old can join this challenge as they set out on their fishing adventures. Many anglers already practice cleaning up the waterways where they fish and now you can earn points for doing just that. \nMonthly points leaders for both fishing and litter pick up will receive some incredible prizes from our sponsors with the 3 overall summer winners each receiving a $500 gift card to Palmetto State Armory. \n“Because of the pandemic\, over the past two years we have seen a lot of new anglers start fishing. We want to nurture that and encourage them\, as well as experienced anglers\, to keep enjoying our beautiful aquatic habitats and to help us keep them clean and litter free”\, said BeBe Dalton Harrison\, Director of Education for the South Carolina Wildlife Federation. \nParticipants in the challenge can log points for each bag of litter they collect\, each fish caught\, and for each healthy release. \nHarrison continued\, “Anglers do not have to release a legal fish if they want to keep it\, but if they do choose to release it\, they will get an extra point to log in the challenge”. \nAnglers who register for the Plishing Challenge will download an app where they can log their catches\, releases\, and litter that they collect. During the summer months\, points leaders and a randomly selected participant will receive prizes each month. \nIndividuals interested in conserving and protecting our state’s aquatic habitats are invited to register for this challenge. Over the summer months\, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation will share information on how to help keep our state clean\, best fishing practices to use when releasing fish\, and we will highlight some unique places where you can go fishing. Fishing is a great way to spend time connecting with your friends\, family\, and the environment. The Plishing Challenge will run from June 1 to August 31 but you can register now or at any time during the event. \nFor more information and to register for the SCWF Plishing Challenge\, visit: https://www.scwf.org/plishing. Sponsors for the project include Palmetto State Armory\, EzOn Bobbers\, Palmetto Pride\, and Angling Women. Partners providing supplies for this project include Shimano\, AFTCO\, and the South Carolina Aquarium.

SUMMARY:Greenville Jewish Film Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Greenville Jewish Film Festival is pleased to announce the 3rd annual SummerFest movie event on August 28\, 2022. \nWe will host a reception and screening of\, “THE MAMBONIKS”\, a 90 minute documentary where bagels meet bongos! This energetic film tells the little-known story of the Jewish love affair with Latin music.  Set in New York\, Havana\, Miami Beach\, and the Catskill Mountains\, this uplifting film features a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the 1950’s. Now retired\, yet still dancing in Florida\, they share their passion for the mambo\, the hot dance from Cuba that became a world-wide sensation.  With an infectious soundtrack including Tito Puente\, Celia Cruz and the mambo king Perez Prado\, this film explores a mostly unexamined aspect of Jewish life and culture. However\, at its heart\, the film is about much more: it’s about  the power of music and dance to bring people together. \nWHAT:  GREENVILLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL – SUMMERFEST 2022 \nWHEN:  SUNDAY\, AUGUST 28 \nTIME:  4:00 pm Film Screening/ 5:30 Dinner -Dancing – Live Band \nWHERE:  Greenville ONE Center – 2 West Washington Street\, Greenville\, SC 29601 \nTICKETS:  $25/person (available on or website beginning August 1\, 2022) \nAbout the Film/Event \nMad Men meets Buena Vista Social Club in this surprising story about the dancers who fell in love with Cuban Mambo in the 1950s\, sparking a dance craze that swept the nation and the world. Like the Beatniks of the era\, the Mambo’s fervent fans earned a hip nickname: The Mamboniks. \nSet in Havana\, Miami Beach and New York\, this fun and upbeat documentary features a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers\, musicians\, disc jockeys\, club owners and record company moguls. Lex Gillespie’s The Mamboniks is the first documentary to tell the story of the musical and dance invasion that came from Cuba in the years preceding Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution of 1959. \nDinner: Cuban Nosh with a side of Mojitos \nMusic: Iliana Rose Cuban Jazz Band – A local band steeped in Cuban Rhythms and Culture. \nDancing: Learn the Mambo/Salsa with Greenville’s\, Pura Alegria Dance Co. \nSpecial Guest: “Mambo Judie”\, a star of the movie\, will regale us with stories of this hot dance craze that became a world-wide sensation. \n  \nAbout the Director \nLex Gillespie is a three-time Peabody Award winner and the shared winner of a silver baton from the duPont-Columbia Journalism Awards at New York’s Columbia School of Journalism. For the past 25 years\, he’s produced documentaries on music\, history\, culture and the arts. His credits include “Let the Good Times Roll\,” a 26-hour history of African-American music from the blues to Motown; “Songs in the Wind\,” the story of the indigenous music of the Andes Mountains; and “Seoul House\,” about a hiphop opera set in a Korean mom-and-pop corner store in Washington\, DC.
