SUMMARY:Narratives Ending in Separation
DESCRIPTION:In Narratives Ending in Separation\, Linda McCune’s mixed media sculptures traverse emotional autobiographies that memorialize cherished family\, childhood fears\, and a young woman’s longing for children. These sculptures give the opportunity to remember and honor the importance of the everyday\, of family. Her finely crafted structures are embedded with made and found objects to imbue her sculpture with an abstract spirituality and a ritual of symbolic details. She reminds us that all our past can be prophetic to our present.

SUMMARY:Furman hosts Georgetown University’s Daniel Sulmasy in ‘Spirituality and End-of-Life Care: What I Learned from Fred’
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Sulmasy\, director of Georgetown University’s Kennedy Institute of Ethics\, will speak on the Furman University campus Wednesday\, Nov. 2\, at 6:30 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel. His talk\, “Spirituality and End-of-Life Care: What I Learned from Fred\,” is the Charles H. Townes Lecture Series in Faith and Reason. Fred’s journey was formative in Sulmasy’s thinking. His unique yet universal end-of-life narrative is the vehicle for conveying his philosophy of patient care. Fred’s last days provided insight on the choices that physicians must often make – or sometimes ignore – perhaps to the detriment of all concerned. After his talk\, Sulmasy will entertain questions and elaborate further on the personal\, theological\, and ethical dimensions of the issues that are part of caring for the dying as well as other patients. \nSulmasy is a senior research scholar at Georgetown. His research interests include both theoretical and empirical investigations of the ethics of end-of-life decision-making\, ethics education\, and spirituality in medicine. The public is invited to attend.

SUMMARY:International Law and its Effect on America
DESCRIPTION:On November 8\, 12:00 PM at the Kroc Center\, the World Affairs Council Upstate will be hosting an interactive lunch and learn speaker event called International vs. Domestic Law. The purpose of this lecture is to provide a politically neutral update on this important issue. \nDo you remember when “Brexit” was in the headlines? How did it effect America? What about South Carolina? Americans are impacted by changes in international law in many more ways than one may expect. From the acquisition of our states through treaties\, sending mail or engaging in commerce across the world\, or using apps and software worldwide\, international law shapes everyone’s lives in hundreds of ways. But how does it impact domestic law? Upstate International’s Beyond the Headlines speaker event will dive into this topic. \nDr. Allan Wilford\, a professor of Political Science at Anderson University whose research focuses on political parties and inequality across advanced democracies\, will be giving an educational lecture on his experience with this important issue. Doors open for lunch and the discussion on November 8th\, 12:00 PM\, located at the Kroc Center\, 424 Westfield St.\, Greenville\, SC. \nBeyond the Headlines; Critical Issues Impacting our World is a Lunch and Learn format speaker series designed to bring fact-based information on the most pressing global issues of today to Upstate residents. Utilizing academics and research institution thought leaders\, we strive to keep political opinions out of the presentation and allow people to ask their own questions and formulate their own opinions. \n  \n
