SUMMARY:Long Overdue: Embracing Contributions from Women in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:In Long Overdue\, Traci Wright Martin and Michelle Radford underscore the importance of recognizing and acknowledging women’s contributions. Traci Wright Martin’s charcoal and mixed media series\, “Art Herstory and the Moth\,” focuses on underrepresented women in art history\, paying tribute to them through visual quotations and symbolism. Michelle Radford highlights the historical oversight of women’s textile work and aims to bring recognition to their innovative designs as valuable artistic expressions. \nBoth artists challenge traditional perceptions of gender norms\, albeit in different contexts. Wright Martin challenges the overshadowing of female artists in art history by drawing a parallel to imagery of moths. Often an overlooked organism\, the moth in Martin’s work symbolizes the need for representation of the feminine art experience. Meanwhile\, Radford challenges distinctions between art and craft\, conceptual and decorative\, urging viewers to reconsider their attitudes toward women’s stitchwork and handicrafts.

SUMMARY:Lander’s Laura Martin to Discuss Relationship of Reading Literature and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the fourth installment of the 2023-24 Community Lecture Series on Tuesday\, February 6\, at the Arts Center. Assistant Professor of English Laura Martin will give a talk titled “Does Literature Make Us Better People?” The lecture begins at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nIt’s a commonly held belief that reading and writing are good for us\, not just academically\, but personally. This belief is so strongly held that prestigious universities like Georgetown and Rice incorporate literature into the studies of doctors-in-training for the explicitly stated purpose of teaching them empathy. But is the relationship between literature and compassion a direct correlation\, or is it more complicated? In this lecture\, Martin will explore the surprising relationship between literature and compassion and discuss how reading and writing can both help and hinder our understanding of others. \nLaura M. Martin is originally from Woodstock\, Illinois and currently resides in Greenville. She has a BA in Humanities with emphases in English and creative writing from New York University\, and an MFA in Creative Writing with a creative nonficition emphasis from Georgia College. This is her seventh year at Lander University where she teaches a variety of writing courses. Her essays appear in HuffPost\, Chicken Soup for the Soul\, New South\, Blue Earth Review\, SHIFT\, The Smart Set and Luna Luna\, among other publications. Her essay\, “Dead Horse Bay\,” was a semifinalist for the 2019 Brooklyn Nonfiction Prize; the same year she was shortlisted for the Submerging Writers Fellowship. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Interim Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.

SUMMARY:SC Nonprofit Summit: Centering Community
DESCRIPTION:South Carolina’s annual Nonprofit Summit\, hosted by Together SC\, our state’s association of nonprofit\, philanthropic\, and community organizations and sponsored by Dominion Energy\, will convene over 700 leaders from across the state. \nScheduled for February 21-23 in North Charleston\, the Summit promises insightful discussions\, dynamic keynote speakers\, and opportunities for collaboration and growth. \nThe Summit will kick off February 21 at 2 pm with a keynote address from Dr. Drew Lanham\, a renowned ornithologist\, poet\, author\, and conservation activist. \nA 2022 MacArthur Fellow and Clemson professor\, Dr. Lanham will share his unique perspective on the intersection of social justice and environmental justice\, urging attendees to consider the importance of our connection to the natural world in shaping vibrant communities. Following his remarks\, Dr. Lanham will join a panel\, moderated by Shawn Edwards (Solutions by Shawn Edwards\, and Summit Co-Chair) to explore how nonprofits can weave his message into their daily work. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Manuel Pastor\, Director of the Equity & Research Institute at the University of Southern California\, whose research on policies\, economics\, and equity has garnered widespread acclaim. \nDr. Pastor’s keynote on February 22 at 11 am will explore strategies for achieving inclusion and prosperity for all\, emphasizing the role of bold leadership\, cross-sector collaboration\, and the solidarity economy in fostering community resilience. \nDr. Manuel Pastor’s expertise in policies\, economics\, and equity underscores the need for nonprofit leaders to understand and embrace the solidarity economy. This economic model\, prioritizing social profitability over purely financial gains\, offers a unique perspective for achieving shared prosperity. A panel of local leaders\, along with Dr. Pastor\, and moderated by Darrin Goss (Coastal Community Foundation\, and Summit Co-Chair)\, will discuss how to put action behind Dr. Pastor’s research in our local communities. \nThe Summit will also feature an essential conversation with neighborhood-level leaders during the event’s final plenary session entitled “Listening to Local Leaders.” Moderated by KJ Kearney of Charleston Promise Neighborhoods and featuring Lydia Cotton (ArtPot Multicultural Center)\, Latarsha Giles-Ansah (Concerned Citizens of Accabee)\, and AJ Davis (Chicora Cherokee Neighborhood Association)\, the panel will explore how the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors can best serve their communities without impeding the important work at the grassroots level. \nNonprofit leaders can play a crucial role by incorporating these principles into their work\, fostering community engagement\, and promoting economic activities that benefit society as a whole. \n
