SUMMARY:No Detail too Small: Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In No Detail Too Small\, Jordan Winiski and KC Christmas explore the intricacies of life. Jordan Winiski transforms overlooked flora into intricate ceramic dioramas to magnify the dichotomy between what is valued or destroyed. KC Christmas’s flora collages serve as a reminder to pause and reflect. \nBy capturing florals in their bloom\, the progress of time is paused in order to observe a moment before it is gone.

SUMMARY:Town Theatre's The Play That Goes Wrong
DESCRIPTION:The show runs January 27 to February 12 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. \nDon’t miss the comedy hit – The Play That Goes Wrong. This play-within-a-play is often called a “hilarious hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes.” Allow us to set the stage… \nIt’s opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor\, a production of the Cornley Drama Society. Things are not going according to plan. With a corpse who can’t play dead\, an unconscious leading lady and accident-prone actors who fall over everything (including their lines)\, the show is quickly moving from bad to disastrous. \n“Breaking legs” in our production is an array of Town veterans and newcomers. Chip Collins (Million Dollar Quartet\, 42nd Street) plays the head of the drama society but also stars in the play-within-a-play which he directed. Overachiever. Castmates include Michael Seezen (Willy Wonka\, Elf: The Musical) as a bumbling butler\, Bill Bentley (The Music Man\, Jekyll & Hyde) playing the loyal\, old school chum\, and Von Huber (in his Town debut) taking on a duo of supporting roles. The play’s leading lady is taken by Katie Mixon (also making her first appearance at Town). And what’s a show without a technical team? David Fichter (in his inaugural Town appearance) serves as the light and sound operator\, Zanna Mills (Bright Star\, Big Fish) is the company stage manager with Leah Tudor (The Red Velvet Cake War\, Joseph…) Corey Langley (Matilda\, Baskerville)\, Adiah Anderson (The Addams Family: School Edition) and Katelyn Oliver (in her first Town appearance) as the show’s run crew. And then there’s the dead body aptly portrayed (or perhaps not) by Nathan Dawson (Baskerville\, Bright Star). \nIf it can go wrong\, it will go wrong. But\, in the end\, this chaotic mess is sure to leave the audience in stitches. \nThe show runs January 27 to February 12 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. \nThe Play That Goes Wrong is directed by Jamie Harrington\, costumes by Jillian Bigony\, set design by Corey Langley and stage management by Chelsey Art. The show is sponsored by South State Bank and Total Comfort.

SUMMARY:it's all around us
DESCRIPTION:It’s all around us is a group exhibition featuring artists Heather Brand\, Alan Shuptrine\, and Dawn Stetzel with works examining natural & synthetic elements of our surroundings. Through photography\, sculptures\, and paintings\, the artists explore the delicate manner in how man-made materials and structures can affect our relationship with the natural world. Objects\, structures\, and places which are not found naturally but are created and synonymous with humanity’s connection with nature question the desire of an ideal natural world versus balancing ways to respond to and maintain our environment.

SUMMARY:AALS Legacy Gala 2023
DESCRIPTION:This February 3\, 2023 United Way of the Piedmont’s African American Leadership Society (AALS) is hosting its first ever Legacy Gala. This evening will be a showstopper\, with dinner\, dancing\, live music\, and a small business showcase. \nStarting at 6:30 PM at USC Upstate’s campus in Spartanburg\, the Legacy Gala is a night to celebrate philanthropy and the work of AALS. AALS is a Donor Network of United Way of the Piedmont that works to increase awareness of United Way’s work and raise money to support their priority projects. \nThis year’s proceeds will benefit United Way of the Piedmont’s housing and homelessness initiatives. For many families\, one unexpected expense or one missed income check can totally disrupt a budget. When meeting basic needs is already a struggle\, just one major blow can force a family to choose between putting food on the table and paying rent. United Way helps families before things spiral out of control by connecting families to community resources and/or providing rental assistance. \nThe African American Leadership Society recognizes this area of concern as a top priority\, and encourages the community to come out for the Inaugural Legacy Gala to make this event a great success. All are welcome and encouraged to come prepared to party for philanthropy! \nFor tickets\, please visit: 23LegacyGala.eventbrite.com \nWhat: AALS Legacy Gala 2023\nWhen: February 3\, 2023 @ 6:30pm\nWhere: USC Upstate\, 800 University Way\, Spartanburg\, SC\, 29303\nHow: 23LegacyGala.eventbrite.com \n  \n

In her presentation\, she will discuss Harriet Tubman’s contributions to the Black freedom struggle and highlight Tubman’s healing practices as a complement to her abolitionism. The lecture will be held both in person and also livestreamed to accommodate those who cannot be on campus. The event will be hosted by MUSC’s Waring Historical Library on Monday\, Feb. 6\, at 6:00 p.m. in the Drug Discovery Building Auditorium on the MUSC campus. \nCooper Owens\, the Linda and Charles Wilson Professor in the History of Medicine and director of the Humanities in Medicine program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, is one of two Black women in the nation who hold these positions. She is currently working on a popular biography of Harriet Tubman through the lens of disability and a monograph about the history of race\, medical discovery and the C-section. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, though reservations are required. Light refreshments will be served after the in-person event. Please RSVP at bit.ly/2023-BHML \nTo learn more\, please visit waring.library.musc.edu\, email waringhl@musc.edu or call (843) 792-2288.

SUMMARY:SwordFest 2023
DESCRIPTION:Just when you thought it was safe to go out without your sword and shield\, SwordFest is back\, yet again\, at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. \nCome on out – admission is free. SwordFest 2023 starts at 10 a.m. and runs until at least 3 p.m. on Saturday\, Feb. 11. \nThe peace of our city will again be disturbed by clanging and swishing of every kind imaginable – and for the sixth time! And if you’ve been to SwordFest before\, you know this isn’t your average historical uprising of swordfighters. It’s more like every kind of bladed weaponry all coming at you at once. But without harmful intent\, of course. \nThis year\, the annual event will feature the following\, and more: \n\nThe Roman IX Legion will be there\, with each legionnaire of the re-enactment group wielding his own gladius or spatha.\nIaido\, the Japanese art of sword-drawing\, will be demonstrated\, thanks to Dan Bernardo of WellWithin in Columbia.\nYou’ll be able to see how Wade Hampton’s 19th-century South Carolina cavalrymen used their sabers.\nAnd fiction – science fiction – will mix with history\, when the Aiken Saber Club demonstrates how it was hypothetically done a long time ago\, in a galaxy far\, far away – with lightsabers.\nThe Aikido group will show you how Japanese swordsmen can be disarmed – which might come in handy someday.\nGentlemen in shining armor will appear\, known as the Palmetto Knights Steel Combat Team.\nAnd something new: practitioners of Kendo\, a fast-moving modern sport practiced in protective gear with bamboo swords.\nAnd of course\, as always\, kids will have the chance to practice their own techniques – with safe “swords” made of foam\, of course.\nYou’ll also be able to see the real\, historical thing\, by checking out the swords in the museum’s extensive collection.\n\nAnd more\, as we said – the schedule is still growing as the event approaches. And it’s all free! \nSo is admission to the museum itself – which makes this a prime opportunity to visit our major new exhibit\, “A War With No Front Lines: South Carolina and the Vietnam War\, 1965-1973.” It fills the 2\,500-square-foot Cistern gallery with artifacts and stories brought back by veterans from our state. Whether you’ve seen it before or not\, it’s worth coming to learn more about your neighbors’ experiences in that faraway\, bitter conflict. \nFor more information\, go to https://crr.sc.gov/.

SUMMARY:County Comprehensive Planning Meetings Scheduled
DESCRIPTION:The Laurens County Comprehensive Plan is a 10-year visioning plan for the future of our County. It’s a blueprint for how the County will manage the expected growth over the next decade. This plan will provide a framework for how Laurens County will make informed decisions about priority investment areas\, the protection and preservation of natural resources\, and future land use changes. \nThe process for completing the comprehensive plan involves a four-phase processes to provide continual opportunities for feedback and refinement of the plan: Phase One – Project Initiation and Management\, Phase Two – Existing Conditions Analysis\, Phase Three – Plan Recommendations\, Phase Four – Plan Synthesis. Studio Main\, and its project partners\, is currently working in Phase Two where we have collected initial existing conditions analysis related to the required chapters of the Comprehensive Plan (Natural Resources\, Cultural Resources\, Land Use\, Population\, Housing\, etc.) and are prepared to engage the public to gather big ideas about the future of Laurens County. \n“This is an opportunity that comes once a decade. Our county is at a vital point in its history. It is important for us to get input from every community across the county. I strongly encourage everyone to participate\, whether that be in person\, or through the online survey link\,” said County Council Chairman Brown Patterson. “I am excited to see the recommendations from all communities formulated into a grand comprehensive plan that will be the road map for how the county navigates the next decade. Having this study completed by a 3rd party will assure that we receive a complete unbiased report of the desire of our citizens. I have full faith that Studio Main will not disappoint. Input from the community on this endeavor is as important as voting. So please participate and provide feedback to help shape the future of Laurens County!” \nThe public engagement will be formatted as a drop-in\, meaning attendees can come anytime between 5pm and 6pm to give feedback. During each session\, attendees will have multiple stations to provide public input on growth\, preservation\, transportation\, and visioning. In addition\, there is an online survey where attendees can provide input if they are not able to attend the in-person sessions. This survey can be found here (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/laurenscounty2033).\n864-984-3933\nThe goal is to provide a broad\, equitable\, and diverse public participation process that reaches all Laurens County residents. \nAfter summarizing the public input\, Studio Main will prepare a draft report of existing conditions\, public input\, and plan recommendations for public comment and discussion. \nThe drop-in schedule is as follows: \n2/13/23 – Gray Court Fire Department (52 Dove Rd\, Gray Court\, SC) \n2/15/23 – Hickory Tavern Fire Department (73 Hickory Heights Dr\, Gray Court\, SC) \n2/20/23 – Laurens County Fire – Station 21 (94 Ranch Road Laurens\, SC) \n2/22/23 – Cross Hill Fire Dept. Station 4 (Darkwood Dr\, Waterloo\, SC) \n2/23/23 – Western Laurens Fire Dept. Station 2 (10849 Indian Mound Rd\, Ware Shoals\, SC) \n2/27/23 – Joanna Fire Department Station (105 N Main St\, Joanna\, SC) \n2/28/23 – Renno Fire Department (23196 SC-72\, Clinton\, SC) \n3/2/23 – Clinton Station 1-Headquarters (404 N Broad St\, Clinton\, SC) \n3/6/23 – Laurens County Fire – Thompson Road (2115 Thompson Road\, Fountain Inn\, SC) \n3/7/23 – Maddens Fire Station (2853 Stagecoach Road\, Laurens\, SC
