SUMMARY:Messages from the Past
DESCRIPTION:In Messages from the Past\, Caroline E. Hughes and Deborah Puretz Grove test the processes that connect us to each other and our past. Through textures and patterning\, we see how textiles\, prints\, and technologies can be a connecting force to bring understanding and advance towards the future. \nCaroline E. Hughes investigates personal experiences with place and community through large-scale textile works. Aspects of rural living are present in her work. Hughes places an emphasis on her history in those settings as a catalyst for connections and shared experiences. Deborah Puretz Grove uses semiconductor plates as metaphors for extending personal memories and connecting people all the time everywhere. In her many series of work\, deeds\, titles\, letters\, and family photos\, from 1890 – 1950 are juxtaposed by references of semiconductor prototypes of the 1990s to further elaborate on the idea of memory extension.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Collectors: The Joys of Collecting Black Art
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of African American Art and Culture (FAAAC) presents Conversations with Collectors: The Joys of Collecting Black Art\, featuring collectors Patrick Diamond\, Dr. Philip Toussaint\, and Marjorie Hammock on Thursday\, June 1\, at the Columbia Museum of Art (CMA). These collectors will share stories about acquiring works by Black artists and following that passion over many years. The conversation will be moderated by Waltene Whitmire\, a founding and current member of the FAAAC board of directors. The event is free\, though registration is preferred. \nThis event is also FAAAC’s annual meeting and includes a reception featuring charcuterie boards from Clarissa’s Kitchen and Catering. Attendees may start or add to their personal art collection through a silent art auction featuring original pieces by local and national Black artists. Throughout the evening\, Columbia artist Ija Charles will create in real time a work of art on canvas\, which auctioneer William Roberts III will present for sale during a live auction at the end of the program. Charles is a self-taught artist and entrepreneur whose work is inspired by everyday people\, diverse samplings from her community\, lived experiences\, and culture. Her compelling and often whimsical murals dot the landscape in Columbia and surrounding communities. \nFor nearly 50 years\, Patrick Diamond and his wife\, Judy\, have collected more than 120 pieces by African American artists. He lives in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, and is a former development director of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. The CMA recently exhibited works from the Judy and Patrick Diamond collection\, including a remarkable selection of works by some of the most significant African American artists of the last century: Benny Andrews\, Radcliffe Bailey\, Romare Bearden\, Elizabeth Catlett\, Sargent Johnson\, Jacob Lawrence\, Hughie Lee-Smith\, Henry Ossawa Tanner\, and Leo Twiggs. \nDr. Philip Toussaint is a neurologist with the Lexington Medical Center\, a member of the FAAAC board of directors\, and a longtime collector of Southern art\, including works of many African American artists. A favorite among Toussaint’s acquisitions is a fairly extensive collection of Dave Pottery. David Drake was an enslaved artist who worked in the Edgefield\, South Carolina pottery-making district in the early 1800s when Edgefield was a hub for the manufacturing of ceramic stoneware. Dave\, who was also a poet\, specialized in large storage jars with horizontal slab handles used for large-scale plantation food preservation. \nMarjorie Hammock’s art collection is an extension of what she once referred to as “an exploration of her Blackness.” As a retired social worker\, civil rights activist\, and college professor\, Hammock has collected works by Black artists as a source of inspiration and a foundational representation of her essence. \nFAAAC presents Conversations with Collectors: The Joys of Collecting Black Art\nThursday\, June 1 | 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. | Reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. | Conversation at 6:15 p.m. | Live auction at 7:30 p.m. | Free; registration preferred. \nThis program is supported in part by a general operating and support grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation. \n  \nAbout the FAAAC \nInclusive of all genders\, ethnicities\, and ages\, the FAAAC was established as a member affinity group by the CMA board of directors in June 2011 to attract more diverse populations to the museum as visitors\, members\, and donors. Its mission is to educate\, enrich\, and inspire the community and visitors to the state while increasing engagement with members of the community interested in African American art and culture. \n

SUMMARY:Invisible Planet
DESCRIPTION:Invisible Planet features exhibiting artists Virginia Russo and Joseph Smolin investigating themes of belonging through an imagined alternative world. Invisible Planet is an imaginary world that represents untouched beauty and the raw wonder of creation. \nRusso created “The Planet” which aims to be a refuge for neuro-divergent people who suffer from sensory issues and overstimulation. This world in her work is a mysterious and ethereal land filled with mountains\, cliffs\, mushrooms\, and an ever-present orange sun. Smolin’s experience growing up half-Jewish in the Deep South—Birmingham\, AL—is reflected in his symbology and exploration of identity issues. His flamboyant and androgynous characters\, as visitors on “The Planet“\, challenge gender norms and societal expectations. Smolin’s work delivers condensed psycho-symbolic imagery that deals with themes of identity\, religion\, oppression\, and conformity.

SUMMARY:College of Charleston to host second annual Maroon Walk for Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:The College of Charleston will host the second annual Maroon Walk for Juneteenth on June 5\, 2023. The event\, which is free and open to the public\, will begin 10:30 a.m. and feature a half-mile walk exploring sites of African American history on the College’s campus. \nThe Maroon Walk for Juneteenth was introduced to the College in 2022 to recognize the federal observation of June 19\, 1865\, the date when “all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are\, and henceforward shall be free.” Congress voted to recognize June 19 as a federal holiday in 2021. \nWe wanted to acknowledge all of the sacred spaces on campus where people of African descent have contributed to the campus culture – in the past\, present and into the future\,” says Kameelah Martin\, dean of the Graduate School\, of the inaugural event. “We had a great turnout of faculty and staff in 2022 and want to encourage community members to participate in 2023.” \n“The Maroon Walk is meaningful for several reasons\,” says Charissa Owens\, director of diversity education and training in the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID). “In the same spirit of civil rights icon Ms. Opal Lee’s walk for Juneteenth\, it’s a higher form of lawfulness to counter state legislature status with observing the federal holiday. The walk is designed to be an empowering\, culturally affirming and physically active opportunity to recognize the federal observation of Juneteenth at the College of Charleston.” \nStarting May 23\, 2023\, up to 25 campus members can purchase the CofC Pan-African T-shirt at the College of Charleston Bookstore for $10 plus tax. Participants are encouraged to wear Pan-African T-shirts to show Juneteenth pride. \nThe Maroon Walk for Juneteenth will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and take the following route: \n\nAvery Research Center for African American History and Culture at 125 Bull Street\nEdward Leon Guenveur House and Lauretta Goodall-Guenveur Garden at 57 Coming Street\nSolar Pavilion behind 65 Coming Street near the Pi Kappa Phi Bell Tower\nRivers Green Memorial behind Addlestone Library\nKnox-Lesesne House at 14 Green Way\nRandolph Hall\nSeptima P. Clark Birthplace at 105 Wentworth Street\nAtrium of the Septima Clark Memorial Auditorium at the Thaddeus Street Jr. Education Center at 25 St. Philip Street\n\nParticipants may register through this online form. The first two people on record to participate in the celebration will receive a CofC Pan-African T-shirt and two tickets to the following Spoleto Festival USA events: \n\nThe Book of Life at 7 p.m. on June 4 in Festival Hall\nDada Masilo: The Sacrifice at 6 p.m. on June 6 in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre\n\nAt the end of the walk\, there will be a raffle with additional prizes\, including two tickets to Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya at 9 p.m. on June 8 in the Cistern Yard. Following the conclusion of the walk\, participants are invited to come together in fellowship over a menu of dishes that represent Black culture through food. \nDeveloped by the Whipper Grant Caucus\, an affinity group designed to support CofC’s Staff Advisory Committee to the President (SAC) in communicating the experiences and perspectives of Black/African American staff members\, the Maroon Walk honors the African American settlements established by fugitive slaves known as maroons. The caucus used the College’s public history project and self-guided tour\, Discovering Our Past\, to identify sites along the route that best educate participants about the history of the campus. \n“It’s a great example of how affinity groups on campus empower employees to participate and shape the way the College recognizes and honors cultural holidays\,” says Owens. “Finally\, it’s a culturally meaningful and visible manifestation of our core value in diversity\, equity and inclusion.” \n

Many of the original members are still performing with the group today\, including its drummer. \nWhen he’s not working with the Big Band\, Goodwin serves as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the USC School of Music and has had a long association with the South Carolina Philharmonic composing\, arranging\, occasionally conducting and playing double bass and trumpet. Along with Dick Goodwin’s Big Band\, he continues to lead the Dick Goodwin Quintet\, which has toured across the world. Goodwin also produces film scores\, commercials\, and albums at GEM Recordings. \n
