DESCRIPTION:The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs presents We Were Made from Shadows\, featuring large-scale installations and assemblage works by artists Hirona and Riki Matsuda\, on view August 23 through September 10\, 2023\, at City Gallery\, located at 34 Prioleau Street. \nThe public is invited to attend a complimentary reception celebrating the opening of the new exhibition on Thursday\, August 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Gallery. \nWe Were Made from Shadows is a body of site-specific installation and assemblage works using primarily found and salvaged objects that highlight the balance between light\, shadow\, texture and scale. The exhibition is based on a project the artists\, sisters Hirona and Riki\, have been developing for more than a decade rooted in themes they observed growing up together in their Charlotte\, NC childhood home. \nThis exhibition focuses mainly on Hirona’s interpretation of these childhood themes and her relationship to growing up in a house where the family business was the central focus of daily life. Several of the concepts were created by Riki and Hirona while living together in Charleston and Ireland\, and most of the works feature found materials from personal collections of objects taken from their childhood home. \nThose interested in viewing the upcoming exhibition are invited visit City Gallery Wednesday through Sunday between 12 and 5 p.m. Gallery admission is free\, and walk-ins are welcome. \nFor more information on the gallery and other upcoming exhibitions\, please visit www.charleston-sc.gov/citygallery or call 843-958-6484. \n

DESCRIPTION:“Let’s start at the very beginning… a very good place to start!” Don’t miss the kickoff to Town Theatre’s 104th season with The Sound of Music. When postulant Maria Rainer proves too high-spirited for the religious life\, she is sent to serve as a governess for the seven von Trapp children. Her rapport grows with the children as she encourages them to put aside their uniforms and marching for a life filled with music and love. Her fondness also grows for their father\, a widowed Captain\, which leaves Maria to struggle between her calling to become a Nun and her desire to be a wife. \nAt the ship’s helm is Tracy Steele (Elf\, A Christmas Story) as Captain Georg von Trapp. Following his military-like family rules\, or so he thinks\, are his seven children (actually 14 with this production’s dual casts of children). Molly Adams\, Gemma Burkett\, Mary Jayne Davis\, Hudson Freeman\, Carly Grosse\, Zachary Hammond\, Olivia Hite\, Benjamin McIver\, Porsha Owen\, Brooke Rowe\, Emily Smith\, Lacie Walko\, Sadie Way and Jackson Wright alternate as stars of the Von Trapp brood. \nThe role of Maria is taken by Ivy Munnerlyn (24 Hour Musical). Town newcomer Becky Loar brings wisdom and guidance as the Mother Abbess with Ashley Alvarado (Jekyll & Hyde) and Joel Yarborough (The Music Man) adding dimension as the filthy rich baroness Elas Schraeder and greedy Uncle Max. \nTown is certainly alive with The Sound of Music! \nThe show runs September 8-24 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the first installment of the 2023-24 Community Lecture Series featuring Lander Professor of Art Doug McAbee. This lively lecture on “The Art of Play” will be held Tuesday\, Sept. 12\, at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, and the event is free and open to the public. \nFred Rogers once said\, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children\, play is serious learning.” Engaging with a healthy sense of play allows the brain to let go of exterior expectations and run free. This lecture will explore the ways in which elements of “play” and “fun” aid in creative thought\, strategic planning and concept development. Professor Doug McAbee will discuss how he embraces playfulness and harnesses its creative power in the production of drawings\, sculptures and immersive installations. \nDoug McAbee is a professor of art at Lander University and an active artist. He earned a B.A. in Art and an M.F.A. at Winthrop University. Professor McAbee learned to weld when he was only seven years old and his creative research focuses on indoor and outdoor steel sculptures and contemporary drawing.
