SUMMARY:Long Overdue: Embracing Contributions from Women in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:In Long Overdue\, Traci Wright Martin and Michelle Radford underscore the importance of recognizing and acknowledging women’s contributions. Traci Wright Martin’s charcoal and mixed media series\, “Art Herstory and the Moth\,” focuses on underrepresented women in art history\, paying tribute to them through visual quotations and symbolism. Michelle Radford highlights the historical oversight of women’s textile work and aims to bring recognition to their innovative designs as valuable artistic expressions. \nBoth artists challenge traditional perceptions of gender norms\, albeit in different contexts. Wright Martin challenges the overshadowing of female artists in art history by drawing a parallel to imagery of moths. Often an overlooked organism\, the moth in Martin’s work symbolizes the need for representation of the feminine art experience. Meanwhile\, Radford challenges distinctions between art and craft\, conceptual and decorative\, urging viewers to reconsider their attitudes toward women’s stitchwork and handicrafts.

SUMMARY:Cola Rosé Shower Turns Williams-Brice Pink on February 3
DESCRIPTION:3rd Annual initiative creates awareness about feminine healthcare in the Midlands \nNow in its third year\, the Cola Rosé Shower celebrates women by promoting awareness about feminine care issues and period poverty in the Greater Columbia community. Held at Williams-Brice Stadium’s Traditions Club (1125 George Rogers Blvd) on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024 at 3:00 PM\, the event transforms Columbia’s most masculine symbol pink for a day to promote unity around the cause of feminine care. \nIn 2022\, approximately 41% of women in the United States ages 18-64 reported having an ongoing medical condition that required monitoring\, care\, or medication. According to the latest Period.org research\, one in three (37%) women in the United States have experienced period poverty in their lifetime.  With a number of sponsors spanning across various business sectors\, Cola Rosé Shower has gained support from local champions\, including: MUSC Health\, Lexington Medical Center\, Assurance Financial\, Wesley H. Frierson\, M.D.\, Law Offices of S. Chris Davis\, 32 Dental\, Kendra Scott\, Pulte Homes\, Dayson Shalabi Burkett Law Firm\, Lugoff Chevrolet Buick GMC\, Lugoff Toyota\, Village Idiot\, Anchor Investments\, and other prominent groups. \nDeonna Wylie is the founder of Cola Rosé Shower and uses her own personal story as fuel for the cause. “I have my own plight\, my own story\, and my own journey. After a challenging 10 years of fibroids\, I was left with no choice but to have a hysterectomy at the age of 36\,” Wylie remarks. \n“Whether battling cancer\, fibroids\, endometriosis\, infertility\, menopause\, facing a hysterectomy\, or other healthcare challenges\, the Cola Rosé Shower provides a place to be seen\, heard\, and celebrated. We bring awareness to feminine health and little-known struggles\, such as period poverty. All women\, despite age and ethnicity\, face their own struggles or have a mother\, sister\, aunt\, cousin or friend who can relate.” \nCola Rosé Shower impacts the lives of women with limited resources. Feminine hygiene product donations are also accepted and will benefit women who are served at Sistercare and The Period Project. \nThe 3rd Annual Cola Rosé Shower tickets are available for purchase through the event’s website at colaroseshower.com. Ticket donations are $75.00 and include an open bar of rosé / frosé accompanied by delicious bites by Southern Way Catering. Everyone is encouraged to wear a shade of pink as we dance the day away to hits with Shejay T.O. (Gamecocks Women’s Basketball official DJ) and witness an experience made possible by the help of À Moi Weddings\, (winner of Free Times Best of Columbia 2023 Wedding Planner) and SJB Event Management. \n\nAbout Cola Rosé Shower \nCola Rosé Shower celebrates women and feminine healthcare in South Carolina through an annual event\, awareness and product donations to nonprofits impacting women. SUMMARY:Lander’s Laura Martin to Discuss Relationship of Reading Literature and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the fourth installment of the 2023-24 Community Lecture Series on Tuesday\, February 6\, at the Arts Center.Assistant Professor of English Laura Martin will give a talk titled “Does Literature Make Us Better People?” The lecture begins at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nIt’s a commonly held belief that reading and writing are good for us\, not just academically\, but personally. This belief is so strongly held that prestigious universities like Georgetown and Rice incorporate literature into the studies of doctors-in-training for the explicitly stated purpose of teaching them empathy. But is the relationship between literature and compassion a direct correlation\, or is it more complicated? In this lecture\, Martin will explore the surprising relationship between literature and compassion and discuss how reading and writing can both help and hinder our understanding of others.\nLaura M. Martin is originally from Woodstock\, Illinois and currently resides in Greenville. She has a BA in Humanities with emphases in English and creative writing from New York University\, and an MFA in Creative Writing with a creative nonficition emphasis from Georgia College. This is her seventh year at Lander University where she teaches a variety of writing courses. Her essays appear in HuffPost\, Chicken Soup for the Soul\, New South\, Blue Earth Review\, SHIFT\, The Smart Set and Luna Luna\, among other publications. Her essay\, “Dead Horse Bay\,” was a semifinalist for the 2019 Brooklyn Nonfiction Prize; the same year she was shortlisted for the Submerging Writers Fellowship. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Interim Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.

SUMMARY:Victory Day at Columbia College
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 8\, is Columbia College’s annual day of giving – Victory Day! Victory Day will be celebrated in tandem with Columbia College’s 170th Founder’s Day. We hope the Columbia community will join students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni in celebration of the college’s bold past and bright future! On campus\, students will enjoy a Victory Day celebration\, while Columbia College supporters across the nation can follow along with progress throughout the day. \nDonors can make a gift on Victory Day 2024 to support one of the many areas of need for students as Columbia College pushes toward its undoubtedly bright future: the Loyalty Fund\, general endowed scholarships\, Koala Pantry\, interview attire support for students on the job hunt\, Koala Athletics\, and the Mitzi Winesett Good Samaritan Fund. This generosity will make a difference in the lives of the students of today—and tomorrow. When donors make a one-time gift of $75 or more\, or set-up a monthly recurring gift of $18.54\, they will receive a limited edition Columbia College tumbler. \nOn February 8th\, the College hopes to raise $80\,000 in just 24 hours! Today\, as much as ever\, Columbia College students are counting on you!

SUMMARY:Swordfest 2024
DESCRIPTION:En garde! Swordfest is coming! And there’s little time left to draw your cold blade. It will be here on Saturday\, Feb. 10! \nIf you don’t know what SwordFest is\, you need to look into hearing aids – how could you have missed the schwinging\, swooshing and clanging? It’s the biggest\, loudest Saturday program at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum each year. So be warned: An army of strangely dressed\, sword-swinging characters are on the march\, and will soon descend on the city with serious fun on their minds. \nJoe Long\, curator of education at the museum\, says final preparations are nearly complete\, and most of the “big draws” are returning. Here’s the schedule as it now stands: \n9:55 a.m. – The action opens with the formation of a Sword Arch by members of the Columbia High Junior ROTC. \n10:00 – Welcome and introduction. \n10:15 – McAuley Broadsword Youth Demonstration Team: South Carolina’s own historic style\, as practiced by 19th century militia. \n10:30 – Carolina Historical Fencing: CHF recreates the fighting techniques of past centuries with a variety of blades! \n11:00 – Iaido\, the Art of Sword-Drawing. Dan Bernardo of WellWithin Martial Arts will demonstrate a traditional Japanese sword art with a live cutting demonstration with a samurai sword. \n11:30 – Columbia Fencing Club: the fast-moving modern sport of fencing\, as seen in Olympic competitions\, also thrives locally! See how the champions train! \n12:15 p.m. – Swords of the Jedi. The Aiken Saber Club will put on a display of a recreational form of swordplay\, inspired by the Star Wars universe. This includes demonstrations of choreographed lightsaber dueling. \n1:00 – Cavalry Saber Historian Neil Rose will demonstrate how Wade Hampton’s cavalry employed the saber at Gettysburg. \n1:30 – Pirates! Theatrical dueling in the classic style\, by members of the Charles Towne Few! \n2:00 – Palmetto Knights Steel Combat Team: armored knights and their fighting techniques. \nAll sorts of associated items will be on display. Oh\, and don’t forget – the museum itself has a huge array of swords\, from those used in combat in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars\, to a 400-year-old samurai sword captured by an American soldier at Iwo Jima! During this event\, you can check out the museum for free. \nCome on and have some real\, educational fun! \n  \n
