SUMMARY:Mind Yourself by Lisa Cyckowski on display at GCCA
DESCRIPTION:Mind Yourself is a solo exhibition at GCCA featuring local Greenville artist Lisa Cyckowski. Her collection of over 30 paintings intertwine scenes of people in the ordinary moments that shape their lives. Cyckowski reflects on a passion for mental health\, seeking to unravel the complexities of human emotion that lives beneath the surface. Cyckowski’s paintings emanate a light-heartedness and whimsy\, drawing viewers into a world of their own. However\, as the figures twist and turn\, a sobering revelation emerges—her characters grapple with personal realities suggesting everything may not be as it appears on the surface. Rooted in genuine life experiences\, Cyckowski’s work offers reassurance and understanding in an uncertain world. Mind Yourself will be on display in GCCA’s Community Gallery until April 24th\, 2024. \nAdmission to GCCA is free and open to the public during normal gallery hours. Open gallery hours are Tuesdays – Fridays 9am-5pm & Saturdays 11am – 3pm. \nAbout the Artist\nLisa Cyckowski is a full-time art who lives in Travelers Rest\, South Carolina. Cyckowski uses a combination of self-study\, peer coaching\, and technical experimentation\, Lisa has successfully found a way to capture a thread of inner thoughts and feelings. Much of her work explores life\, motions\, and personal struggles. Lisa uses her art to bring attention to the importance of emotional health awareness and suicide prevention programs. A percentage of Lisa’s art sales proceeds have been donated back to the mental health community. Lisa has exhibited her artwork across South Carolina and throughout New Jersey. \nGCCA is located at 101 Abney St\, Grenville\, SC 29611.

SUMMARY:Lander’s Mentley to Discuss History of Pilgrimage in Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood for the sixth and last installment of the 2023-24 Community Lecture Series Tuesday\, April 2\, at the Arts Center.Professor of Spanish Dr. Carlos Mentley will give a talk titled “A Long Walk to Church: The Camino de Santiago Today.” The lecture begins at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nCarlos Mentley: A Long Walk to Church \nDate: Tuesday\, April 2\nTime: Refreshments and cash bar – 5:30 p.m. Lecture – 6 p.m.\nLocation: The Arts Center of Greenwood\, 120 Main St.\, Uptown Greenwood\, SC\nAbout the Event: \nThe pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela was one of the great cultural undertakings of the Middle Ages\, and perhaps the most extraordinary adventure a person could have. It still is. The Camino de Santiago represents more than a millennium of history and tradition. The network of routes that lead to Compostela in the northwest of Spain contributed significantly to the development of western European civilization. Today\, hundreds of thousands of modern pilgrims still tread these ancient paths on their way to Compostela\, engaging in an idealized re-creation of the medieval pilgrimage. In this lecture\, Mentley explores what it means to be a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago in the 21st century. And who knows? You may hear the Camino de Santiago calling to you as well.\nMentley is a professor of Spanish in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Lander University\, where he also serves as the director of study abroad. He earned B.A. degrees in Spanish and in psychology from Michigan State University\, and a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from Cornell University. A passionate believer in the art of pilgrimage\, Mentley walked his first Camino de Santiago in the winter of 2003. Since then\, he has walked Camino routes in Portugal\, Germany\, France and Spain. He has served as a volunteer hospitalero in Grañón\, and is a former chairman of the Board of Directors of American Pilgrims on the Camino. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact Interim Assistant Provost Dr. Mark Rollins at 864-388-8563 or mrollins@lander.edu.

SUMMARY:Cinematic Lives at The Nick
DESCRIPTION:Join The Nick and the Columbia Museum of Art for a two-part series exploring themes in the CMA exhibition Interior Lives: Modern American Spaces\, 1890–1945. See two films from the 1940s\, Citizen Kane and Meet Me in St. Louis\, followed by talkbacks featuring CMA Senior Curator Michael Neumeister\, who created the exhibition\, and Laura Major\, collections manager at USC’s Moving Image Research Collections. \nOn April 2\, gather at The Nick for a screening of Citizen Kane (1941\, Orson Welles)\, long regarded as one of the best American films of all time. It follows the mystery of Charles Foster Kane’s tragic death through interviews and flashbacks spanning from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Famous for its groundbreaking cinematography\, the film employed the use of deep focus\, an innovation where foreground\, midground\, and background all remained in focus. This technique allowed the filmmaker to highlight the various interior spaces that Kane inhabited throughout his life\, from his modest childhood home to his ostentatious final abode\, Xanadu. \nOn April 15\, gather at The Nick for a screening of the Judy Garland classic Meet Me in St. Louis (1944\, Vincent Minelli)\, a film that follows the everyday lives of the Smiths\, an upper middle-class family living in St. Louis at the turn of the 20th century. Much of the story takes place in the interior spaces of the Smith’s Victorian home\, where the four Smith sisters navigate love\, life\, and family in an ever-changing America. The film also displays many of the technological advances leading up to the 1904 World’s Fair. \nTickets are $15 / $12 for Nick and CMA members with discount code ‘member3’. SUMMARY:Carolina Mountains to Shore
DESCRIPTION:The Carolinas have a beautiful and diverse landscape that is abundant with natural resources. Whether in the upcountry\, central hills\, or on the coast\, each region provides opportunities for recreation\, exploration\, and geologic inspiration. The landscape also reveals moments from our history and helps tell the stories that define Carolina heritage. Places and sights discovered while idly driving through the countryside\, visiting the cities and coast\, during quiet moments in nature\, or while glimpsing a lovely vista have inspired the work in this exhibition. \nCarolina Mountains to Shore feature the work of the Upcountry Fiber Artists which consists of six Carolina artists including Evelyn Beck\, Lynne Harrill\, Sara Quattlebaum\, Cynthia Steward\, Denny Webster\, and Kathryn Weston. They work with textiles to create artworks that range from pictorial to abstract\, small to large\, and colorful to subdued. Their adventurous use of fabric\, surface design\, and quilting create exciting and innovative works that share their unique and individual Carolina experience.

SUMMARY:Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune
DESCRIPTION:Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune by Terrance McNally has come to Trustus Theatre several times since its opening in 1989. First seen in 1993 with Jim and Kay Thigpen\, many remember Trustus’ founders as Frankie and Johnny fondly. Jason Stokes and Marybeth Gorman Craig take the roles this time around\, bringing a familiar flavor to the show. Under the direction of Erin Thigpen Wilson\, the pair bring a sincerity to the roles that make them endearing and relatable. \nThe show runs from April 11th-20th in the Trustus Side Door\, and tickets are available now at trustus.org. By becoming a season subscriber\, theater enthusiasts can guarantee their access to all Main Stage productions in the coming year\, as well as receive discounts on tickets to productions in the Side Door Theatre and to special events. Discounts for students\, seniors\, and military are also available. \nFor more information\, or to purchase your tickets\, visit trustus.org or call the Trustus Box Office at (803) 254-9732.
