SUMMARY:National Day of Prayer Celebration to Unite Davidson Street Baptist Church and Community
DESCRIPTION:As the first Thursday of May approaches\, communities across the nation are gearing up for a significant occasion—the National Day of Prayer. This year\, on May 2nd at 6:00 pm\, Davidson Street Baptist Church is set to host a special event in partnership with local residents\, and officials\, marking this important day of unity and supplication. \nThe National Day of Prayer holds deep significance for Americans from all walks of life\, serving as a poignant reminder of the power of collective prayer and community spirit. It’s a time to come together and lift our schools\, police\, fire departments\, and governmental leaders in prayer. \nLast year’s event saw a moving prayer walk through Clinton\, culminating in heartfelt supplications at Vance Park. This year promises to be equally impactful\, with a distinguished guest speaker\, Solicitor David Stumbo\, scheduled to address the congregation and participants. \nPastor Kenny Moore\, the spiritual leader of Davidson Street Baptist Church\, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s gathering\, stating\, “The National Day of Prayer is a beautiful opportunity for our community to join in unity and faith. We are thrilled to open our doors and hearts to our neighbors as we seek God’s blessings upon our nation.” \nSolicitor David Stumbo\, known for his dedication to public service\, shared his thoughts on the upcoming event: “I am truly honored to be asked by Pastor Moore to speak at Davidson Street Baptist Church for the National Day of Prayer. It is so important that we come together as a community\, no matter what our background or political positions might be\, to go before our great God in a spirit of humility and repentance to ask for His favor on our state and our country.” \nThe evening promises to be a memorable occasion of reflection\, solidarity\, and hope. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate in this profound expression of faith and civic engagement. \nLet’s mark our calendars for May 2nd at 6:00 pm and join hands in prayer at Davidson Street Baptist Church\, as we embrace the true spirit of the National Day of Prayer.

SUMMARY:Senior P.R.E.P. Program Coming to Laurens Walgreens
DESCRIPTION:Older adults are among the most vulnerable when an emergency impacts South Carolina. Therefore\, taking precautions ahead of time can greatly benefit seniors in vulnerable situations. \nThe Senior P.R.E.P. program\, created by the South Carolina Department on Aging\, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division\, and Walgreens\, provides planning resources to help senior citizens across South Carolina with emergency planning. P.R.E.P. stands for Planning and Resources for Emergency Preparedness. \nThe event takes place on May 3 at Walgreens\, 814 East Main Street\, Laurens\, SC 29360\, from 9 to 11 a.m. Several partner agencies will discuss the importance of emergency planning and provide information. Weather radios and other emergency materials will be available for seniors and the community. \nSeniors may encounter obstacles during an emergency\, including limited mobility and medical needs. The Senior P.R.E.P. program promotes individual preparedness\, awareness\, and planning with family\, friends\, and caregivers ahead of an emergency. \nThings to Consider: \nPlan with family\, friends\, and caregivers to assist with limitations.\nInclude necessary assistive technology and medical supplies (i.e.\, oxygen tank) in your emergency kit.\nHave a plan or backup resource to power essential medical equipment.\nCheck with any agency providing you services for special provisions in an emergency.\nHave clear and concise instructions for rescue personnel regarding special needs or equipment.\nMap out accessible emergency exits at home and work.\nConsider getting a medical alert system that can be used to call for help.\nEveryone can take steps now to prepare for emergencies. \nFor further information on the Senior P.R.E.P. program\, visit local Walgreens locations. SUMMARY:Walt's Waltz "Mental health Moonshot" art exhibition opens at GCCA on May 3rd
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health Moonshot is a featured group exhibition at GCCA’s Community Gallery that beckons us to embark on a monumental journey aimed at unraveling the complexities of mental health and dismantling the barriers of stigma. Mental Health Moonshot stands as a collective outcry for equity for those captured by mental health struggles. This exhibition is more than a showcase; it is a beacon of hope piercing the darkness of mental health struggles. Walt’s Waltz in partnership with GCCA is committed to erasing stigmas and reducing suffering as they work as a catalyst for change. Jess Abbott\, GCCA’s CEO\, states\, “Amidst all the colors and creations in the arts\, lies a canvas for healing. At GCCA\, we recognize the profound intersection between mental health and artistic expression. As the first Stigma Free Zone in Greenville\, SC\, we proudly champion the power of creativity in nurturing mental wellness. Our commitment extends beyond our walls\, as we embark on an enlightening journey with ‘Walt’s Waltz’ in 2024\, reaffirming our dedication to education and advocacy. Together\, let’s ensure that the vital dialogue surrounding mental health remains vibrant and unyielding.” \nWith a dual-fold theme of hope and resilience\, the exhibition delves into the triumphs and tribulations of individuals grappling with mental health conditions. As researchers push the boundaries of understanding underfunded fields including genetics and epigenetics\, there is hope for those facing treatment-resistant conditions. Similar to the ‘71 War of Cancer and now the Cancer Moonshot\, a Mental Health Moonshot is an essential declaration as behavioral health struggles are complicated. With the last words from her son\, “Mom\, sometimes people just don’t get better\,” Walt’s Waltz founder\, Susan Crooks\, and the entire Walt’s Waltz team invites you to them in their declaration “We must do better.” \nAbout the Artists & Advocates for Mental Health \nMental Health Moonshot is driven by a collective of artists who create artworks that advocate for mental health awareness and social change. The featured artists are Traci Wright Martin\, Will Crooks\, Kara Bender\, Aldo Muzzarelli\, Amanda Barbarito\, Elisa Golden\, Connie Lippert\, Terrell Washington\, Sherrill Hill\, Barbara Castenada\, Samantha Goss\, Tania Ro\, and local poet and psychiatrist Frank Clark\, whose poetry is paired with artist Lisa Teo’s work couriered to GCCA from Malaysia. These artists challenge stigma and encourage understanding. Their artwork reflects the emotional depth of lived experiences while underlining the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues within our communities. \nAfter the opening on May 3rd\, the exhibition will be on display until June 26th. Admission to GCCA to view the art exhibition is free and open to the public during regular open hours. \nLearn More about Walt’s Waltz: https://www.waltswaltz.com/

SUMMARY:Melrose Heights brings artists and entertainment to a historic Columbia neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Melrose Art in the Yard will once again welcome artists and artisans to show and sell their original work in the historic\, downtown Columbia neighborhood. The event will be held on Sunday\, May 5\, 2024\, from 1 to 5 pm with art\, food and live music at a family friendly event. \nHistoric Melrose Art in the Yard (AITY) held the first art event in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. The May 5th AITY will be the eleventh time the event has been held. This event is entirely outdoors and spread over several city blocks. \n“The Historic Melrose neighborhood is looking forward to welcoming visitors and supporting the local arts scene on May 5th\,” said Lila McCullough\, one of the event organizers. “We will showcase a wide variety of artists and artisans in yards throughout the neighborhood. We expect to have close to 100 artists as well as a number of food trucks and live music too\,” said McCullough. \nThe event is FREE and open to the public and will be followed by live music featuring Hannah Kaminer and the Wistfuls at 5:00 pm. Information and maps will be available on Facebook and Instagram. \nArt in the Yard is grateful to Paul McCullough-Bollin Ligon Walker Realtors\, David Hunt Creative\, Crave Artisan Specialty Market\, Grace Outdoor Advertising\, The New York Butcher Shoppe and Ascent Total Performance for their generous support. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Something Rotten the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Renaissance! Don’t miss this hilarious musical following the Bottom brothers\, Nick and Nigel\, struggling playwrights trying to make a name for themselves in the shadow of William Shakespeare. When a local soothsayer tells the brothers that the future of theatre involves singing and dancing\, they decide to create the world’s first musical. Amidst the excitement of opening night\, Nick and Nigel find true power in following their dreams\, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. \nTown’s stinky cast is led by Paul Lindley (Shrek) and Von Huber (The Play That Goes Wrong) as Nick and Nigel Bottom. Their rival and inspiration\, William Shakespeare\, is taken by Anthony Matrejek (Nice Work if You Can Get It). Bea\, Nick’s wife\, is in the capable hands of Roxanne Rich (42nd Street) while Portia\, Nigel’s love interest\, is taken by Caroline Quinn (Grease). David LaTorre (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) sets the plot in motion as Nostradamus with James Galluzzo (Tarzan) providing some opposition as Brother Jeremiah. \nThis show could not happen without the ensemble who takes on a variety of roles – even dancing eggs. Audiences will remember Taryn Wilhoit Davis\, Mathew Eberhardt\, Nicholas Eberhardt and Avery McCree all from A Christmas Story: The Musical\, and Elizabeth Rawson and Alyssa Wilson from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Also appearing is Chauntel Bland (Beauty and the Beast)\, Zanna Mills (Bright Star) and Katie Gatch (Catch Me if You Can). Mary Jayne Davis\, Meg Greeley\, James Nolan\, Grayson Norene\, McKinley Porth and Lee Saxton hand jive their way over from Grease. Aydan Wunderlich (Into the Woods)\, Steve Wrona (Jekyll & Hyde)\, Robin Blume (Mary Poppins)\, Leah Tudor (Arsenic and Old Lace) and Joey Weaver (Hello\, Dolly!) take the Town stage once again. Maggie Baker and Nathan Jackson bring their A-game from The All Night Strut while Carly Grosse and Ivy Munnerlyn are some of our favorite things from The Sound of Music. Connor Etcheson and Katie Sawicki followed the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz with Agnes Babb\, Nathan Dawson and Richard Fisher back on the stage after wrapping White Christmas. And we welcome our new faces to the theatre: Michael Adams\, Kameron Carpenter\, Alex Fossum\, Chris Matney\, William Alexander Milhouse\, Maria Siepel\, Jeff Sigley\, Sara Slaughter and Julia Turner. \nSomething Rotten runs May 10-25 with 7:30 PM performances Thursdays through Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. Tickets are available at towntheatre.com or by calling 803-799-2510. \nThis musical includes adult situations and some language. Rated PG-13.
