SUMMARY:PHOTOSC PRESENTS ADD|MIX|FOLD BY ARTIST NANCY FARESE ON AUGUST 23
DESCRIPTION:Photographs\, thread\, and collage weave a visual memoir about growing up in the South in the 60s. Add|Mix|Fold opens on August 22\, 2024\, at PhotoSC in Columbia\, South Carolina. \nPhotoSC is proud to present Add|Mix|Fold\, a mixed media exhibition by artist Nancy Richards Farese on view from August 23 through September 21\, 2024. A reception with the artist will occur on Friday\, August 23\, at 918 Lady Street\, Columbia\, SC\, from 6-8 pm\, and a book signing with Farese will be held at All Good Books at 734 Harden St\, Columbia\, SC\, on Saturday\, August 24\, at 2 pm. The exhibition debuted at Maine Media in Spring 2023 and will make its fifth stop in Columbia\, SC\, on its multi-city tour throughout the Southeast. \nI still speak Southern in my head… \nAdd|Mix|Fold is inspired by a family pound cake recipe and a metaphor for how stories are mixed and folded into memory\, and by bringing the past into the present\, this work asks that art become essential in making and remaking sense of our lives. As a Southerner\, the artist examines how we also ‘sift’ through the legacy that we inherit\, paradoxical in beauty and violence\, to decide what to hold onto and let go. Like these art objects\, memory is constantly being assembled and collaged\, a quilt of fact and fiction that we wrap ourselves in. \nThe exhibition features 30 hand-crafted photographs\, which are tactile by design and push back on digital and synthetic imagery. Adding dimensionality with collage and thread suggests both assembly and exclusion. Stitching is\, after all\, our most ancient form of repair\, associated with the practical but also the creative and the subversive. \nNancy Richards Farese is a California-based photographer who grew up in Carrollton\, Georgia. She is a writer and social entrepreneur whose creative process is grounded in visual storytelling and social impact. Farese is an award-winning documentary photographer and has written extensively on the value of creativity and play in our work. She has collaborated with international development organizations\, including the UN High Commission on Refugees\, Refuge Point\, and CARE USA\, to create a visual survey of children’s play around the world. The book Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play was published in December 2021\, and an exhibition of the series is traveling from 2023-2028. She is the founder and board chair of CatchLight.io\, a visual first media organization that leverages the power of visual storytelling to inform\, connect\, and transform communities. She lectures on the social value of promoting a more playful world and the importance of supporting a robust visual media ecosystem in civil society. \n

SUMMARY:Lander History Professor William Ramsey to Give Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2024-25 Community Lecture Series\, hosted by Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood\, kicks off Tuesday\, September 3\, with a lecture from Dr. William Ramsey\, professor of history at Lander. Titled\, “Fighting Infamy: A Marine Fighter Pilot’s Epic Stand at the Battle of Wake Island\,” Ramsey’s lecture draws on research from his new book\, “Wake Island Wildcat\,” available for pre-order now on Amazon or wherever good books are sold. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nWhen the Japanese attacked Wake Island in December 1941—the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor—Marine pilot Henry T. Elrod took to the skies in his F4F Wildcat fighter to defend the American military base on the tiny Pacific atoll\, battling swarms of enemy planes and ships with rare courage and skill for the next two weeks. Captain Elrod\, who had attended Yale and spent his freshman year playing football at the University of Georgia\, had arrived mere days before as part of a fighter squadron of twelve pilots. \nOn December 10 and 11\, Elrod had two of the most remarkable days of the war for any pilot in any theater: he took on a group of twenty-two Japanese planes—shooting down two—and then bombed and strafed the destroyer Kisaragi\, sinking the vessel with all hands and becoming the first American pilot to sink a warship with small caliber bombs delivered by a fighter plane in World War II. Then\, once American aircraft were too damaged to fly\, the pilots joined the ground defense against Japanese invasion forces. Elrod assumed command of one sector of the beach and led the repulse of repeated enemy assaults until he was killed on the last day of the battle\, just before the American surrender. \nThough unsuccessful\, the against-the-odds battle for Wake Island buoyed American morale during a dark period of World War II. Elrod\, who became known as “Hammerin’ Hank\,” was a key figure in the defense. For his gallantry\, he was posthumously promoted to major and awarded the Medal of Honor. A US Navy frigate and a street at Marine Base Quantico were named for him\, and a piece of his plane is on display at the National Air and Space Museum. Drawing on research in military archives and materials from Elrod’s family\, William L. Ramsey tells Hammerin’ Hank’s full story—which is not only the history of the battle for Wake Island but also the experiences that led him to become a Marine fighter pilot—with drama and verve. \nWilliam L. Ramsey is an historian\, poet and professor of history at Lander. He received his Ph.D. from Tulane University in 1998\, and in addition to Lander\, has taught at Tulane\, SUNY Oswego and the University of Idaho. In 2005\, he received the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the University of Idaho and Washington State University\, acting jointly\, for public activism in defense of civil rights and racial tolerance\, and he was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2007 by the Student Association of the University of Idaho. His historical articles have appeared in the Journal of American History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, and the South Carolina Historical Magazine. His first book\, “The Yamasee War: A Study of Culture\, Economy and Conflict in the Colonial South\,” received the 2008 George C. Rogers Jr. Award for best book of South Carolina history\, sponsored by the South Carolina Historical Society. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. SUMMARY:Lander University to Host Artists Rojas\, Yazmin
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Department of Art + Design for a reception and conversation with visiting artists Jorge Rojas and Siara Yazmin on Thursday\, September 5\, at 5 p.m. in the Lander Art Gallery\, located inside the Abney Cultural Center at Lander University. The exhibit\, titled “Mujer: Sanctuary\,” will be on display in the gallery beginning August 21 through September 25. The reception and visits to the gallery are free and open to the public\, and the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. \nJorge Rojas is a muralist and educator with thirty years of experience in visual arts. Rojas is known for his large-scale mural art and expertise in the human figure\, and received his formal education from the National University of Colombia. He previously worked as a studio artist and educator in Colombia\, instructing aspiring artists of all age groups\, while also designing diverse large-scale murals for various public and private organizations in Colombia\, Brazil\, the Philippines and the United States. He also owned his own company\, Colombian Cobalt Blue\, which specialized in custom tableware\, utilitarian ceramics and ceramic murals on a commissioned basis. Rojas now works as a full-time commissioned muralist\, residing in Greenville. \nSiara Yazmin learned early in life just how wild and fun art can be. She watched her mother and grandfather create a magical Disney mural in the room she shared with her sister. She was enamored with crazy cartoon shows and fantastical animated movies. The endless possibilities of painting and drawing felt freeing\, and that feeling never left her. Faces have always been her favorite subjects\, either from her imagination or real life. “There is already so much emotion there\, ready to complement the right style and colors\,” she says. Yazmin also loves working with animals\, wildlife and nature as subjects. She hopes to tell a story in each painting\, and it’s touching to her when someone else sees and feels a story of their own in her art. \nPlease visit www.lander.edu/events for updates and to confirm event times and venues. For questions\, please contact the College of Arts and Humanities at 864-388-8323\, or email Perrin Rickenbaker at jrickenbaker@lander.edu. \nTo make a gift to the College of Arts and Humanities\, please visit https://giving.lander.edu/give/CoAH.

SUMMARY:Anything Goes at Town Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to embark on a high-seas adventure as Town Theatre proudly presents the timeless classic\, Anything Goes. This vibrant\, toe-tapping musical promises a voyage filled with laughter\, romance and Cole Porter’s unforgettable melodies. \nAt the ship’s helm as Reno Sweeney is Rebecca Seezen (Mamma Mia!)\, who pals around with best friend Billy Crocker\, played by Aydan Wunderlich (Into the Woods). Billy is in love with debutante Hope Harcourt\, portrayed by Alex Carrico (Jekyll & Hyde)\, but she is betrothed to the quirky Lord Evelyn Oakleigh\, brought to life by David LaTorre (Beautiful). Complicating matters is Hope’s mother\, Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt\, entangled in her own romance with the imbibing and sometimes imbecilic Eli Whitney. Kathy Hartzog (Driving Miss Daisy) and Bill DeWitt (Moon Over Buffalo) take on this comedic duo. Add to the mix gangster Moonface Martin and his sidekick Erma\, played by Scott Vaughan (The Music Man) and Maggie Baker (The All Night Strut!)\, and you’re sure to find yourself enjoying the voyage on the S.S. American\, where anything—and we mean anything—goes. \nThe crew is shipshape with our Captain\, played by Chip Collins (The Play That Goes Wrong)\, and his Purser\, Todd Gustafson (The Wizard of Oz). Ensuring things are tip-top on board are our sailors: Liam Amil and Richard Fisher (both from Beauty and the Beast)\, Jack Bingham (Something Rotten)\, Jack Seezen (Les Mis: Student Edition)\, Jackson Wright (Newsies Jr.)\, and newcomers Benjamin Connelly and Braylen Hinton. Ashley Epperson (42nd Street)\, Kristy O’Keefe Satterwhite (Mamma Mia!)\, Kendall Scruggs (The Music Man)\, and Jenna Sweeney (The Sound of Music) bring a healthy dose of “hallelujah” as Reno’s Angels. Stirring up trouble are two New York kleptomaniac swindlers\, Spit and Dippy\, taken by Kameron Carpenter and Joey Weaver (both from Something Rotten). Carly Grosse\, Lexi Narry and Leah Tudor ascend the gangplank from the holiday hit White Christmas. Agnes Babb\, Lisa Baker\, Taryn Davis and Christy Shealy Mills journey to the ship via The Wizard of Oz’s yellow brick road. Eliza England and Abby Gamble depart the barricade of Les Mis: Student Edition\, while McKinley Porth and Sara Slaughter leave the renaissance of Something Rotten to join the ship’s manifest. Our journey would not be complete without welcoming a new Town voyager Dayna Arnett. Plus\, it’s all hands on deck with cameo appearances by Bill Bentley and Michael Seezen (both from The Play That Goes Wrong). Anchors aweigh with Anything Goes! \nAnything Goes runs from September 6-22\, with performances at 7:30 PM on Thursdays to Saturdays and 3:00 PM Sunday matinees. Don’t miss Town’s kickoff to the season with a special party hosted by the Town Theatre Board of Governors post-curtain on Friday\, September 6. Join the Board\, cast\, and crew for a toast to celebrate Town’s 105th season. \nThe show is directed by Shannon Willis Scruggs\, with Amanda Haines Wrona as music director and choreography by Joy Alexander. Dell Goodrich serves as costumer\, with set design by Bob Bramhall\, light design by Jeremy Hansard\, sound design by Clark Wilson\, and props by David LaTorre. The show is generously sponsored by Jim Hudson Automotive and Willis Tax & Accounting.

SUMMARY:The Laurens County Battles of Fort Williams: The Most Contested Site in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Nestled between Mountville\, Cross Hill\, and Newberry County\, near a modest creek\, lies the historic location of Fort Williams. Known as the most contested site in America during the American Revolution\, Fort Williams changed hands six times throughout the conflict. This significant site\, hidden in Laurens County’s landscape\, holds a pivotal place in the history of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. \nHistorian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will shed light on this crucial chapter in American history during a special presentation on Tuesday\, September 10\, at 7:00 pm at the Laurens County Museum\, located at 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC. The public is warmly invited to attend. Museum members and those 18 years old and under can enjoy the event free of charge\, while others are encouraged to make a suggested donation of $5 to support the museum’s ongoing efforts. \nAshmore highlights the elusive nature of Fort Williams’ exact location. Despite the ambiguity\, General James Williams’ biography\, Backcountry Revolutionary by Will Graves\, chronicles the fort’s role in the war. James Williams\, a prominent figure in the Southern Campaign\, was a pioneer in the Ninety Six District\, a miller\, and a member of the Provisional Assembly before the war. His valor and leadership on the battlefield were instrumental\, though he ultimately fell at the Battle of Kings Mountain. \nThe Laurens County Museum’s exhibit hall is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday\, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. For more information on museum membership\, volunteer opportunities\, or upcoming programs\, please contact the museum at (864) 681-3678\, visit their website at LaurensCountyMuseum.org\, or check their Facebook page.
