SUMMARY:Reading with Jennifer Bartell Boykin
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Poetry Society of South Carolina \nJoin the Poetry Society of South Carolina for a workshop and reading at GCCA! Experience a reading by Jennifer Bartell with the opening reader Candace Wiley. \nFoodways in Poetry \nCollard greens\, okra\, fried chicken\, company chicken\, pileau (pronounced perlo)\, sweet tea\, pound cake and more appear throughout my poetry. Each dish is important to my experiences with my family and my community. Think of the dishes that are staples for you. What are the memories you have with that food? How do you feel while eating it? Who are you with? The tastes\, textures\, and smells are the menu for memory\, emotion\, and therefore poetry. In this workshop\, we will explore the connections between food\, memory\, and poetry. Come with 1-2 dishes and memories associated with them in mind. If you have a family recipe you’d like to explore\, bring that too. \nZoom link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/-FDN4SxGSYeMaG7awE9a-Q \nAbout Jennifer: \nJennifer Bartell Boykin is the Poet Laureate of the City of Columbia\, South Carolina. She was born and raised in Bluefield\, a community of Johnsonville\, SC. She received the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a Poetry Concentration (2014) and the Master of Library and Information Science (2024) from the University of South Carolina. \nShe is the author of her debut book of poetry Traveling Mercy (Finishing Line Press\, 2023) and her second book of poetry Only Believe (The Word Works\, 2024) is a 2023 winner of The Hilary Tham Capital Collection. Both are published under the name Jennifer Bartell. Her poetry has been published in Obsidian\, Callaloo\, pluck!\, The Raleigh Review\, kinfolks\, Jasper Magazine\, the museum americana\, Scalawag\, and Kakalak\, among others. \nShe is a 2023 Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow and organized the Inaugural Soda City Poetry Festival in June 2024. SUMMARY:4th Annual Cola Rosé Shower
DESCRIPTION:Cola Rosé Shower creates awareness about women’s healthcare\, facilitates 40\,000+  feminine product donations in the Midlands \nThe 4th annual Cola Rosé Shower will be held on Saturday\, February 8 at 3PM at the Williams-Brice Stadium’s Traditions Club (1125 George Rogers Blvd). Ticket donations are $75.00 and include an open bar of rosé / frosé accompanied by delicious bites by Southern Way Catering. Feminine product donations will be collected for Sistercare and The Period Project to benefit women and girls with limited resources in the Midlands. Everyone is encouraged to wear a shade of pink as we dance the day away to hits with Shejay T.O. (Gamecocks Women’s Basketball official DJ). \nApproximately 49% of women in the United States ages 18-64 reported having an ongoing medical condition that required monitoring\, care or medication (KFF.org). In South Carolina\, 1 in 5 women and girls between the ages of 12 and 44 live below the Federal Poverty Line. Period resources are among one of the most significant needs of women’s health for youth and women of childbearing age. \nDeonna Wylie is the founder and chair of Cola Rosé Shower and uses her own personal testimony as fuel for the cause. After a challenging 10 years of fibroids\, she was left with no choice but to have a hysterectomy at the age of 36. She created the Cola Rosé Shower in 2021 as a place to be seen\, heard\, and celebrated. \nCola Rosé Shower has gained support from a variety of amazing community advocates\, including: MUSC Health\, Lexington Medical Center\, Prisma Health\, Richland County\, Wesley H. Frierson\, M.D.\, Law Offices of S. Chris Davis\, Lugoff Chevrolet Buick GMC\, Yip Premier Real Estate\, LLC\, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina\, The Honorable Stephen K.
