SUMMARY:The Flood - Solo Exhibition by Melissa Haviland
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Haviland’s The Flood draws on the long history of “bluing\,” a process in which blue dyes were added to paper and textiles to counteract yellowing which improved perceived quality of the material. From 15th-century European paper made from worn rags to the more modern blue-tinted laundry brighteners\, bluing has long suggested improvement\, and value—even when it only disguised what may lay beneath. \nIn The Flood\, Haviland reimagines this history through the lens of climate disaster. The towering\, immersive installations evoke the sensation of being swept away\, as if the ocean had flooded through the space. This work embodies both the chaos of everyday stresses\, bedtimes\, deadlines; and the immense weight of global crises: climate refugees\, rising seas\, water scarcity\, and environmental collapse. The blue in The Flood echoes the promise of enhancement\, even as we are submerged in questions of survival: how do we stay afloat? \nGreenville Center for Creative Arts affirms the importance of artistic freedom and the power of creative expression — including work that may provoke\, challenge\, or confront. This exhibition contains content that some viewers may find unsettling or emotionally intense. Viewer discretion is advised for all ages.

SUMMARY:American Legion Post 25 Gears Up for 5th Annual Toy Run
DESCRIPTION:Community generosity fuels year-round projects\, with Christmas for kids as a top priority \nAmerican Legion Post 25 is once again rallying the community to help spread holiday cheer during its 5th Annual Toy Run on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025\, at 11:00 a.m. on Main Street in Laurens. Riders and supporters are invited to bring a new\, unwrapped toy to donate\, helping ensure that children across Laurens County have a brighter Christmas this year. \nThe Toy Run is more than just a festive event — it’s one of Post 25’s most important annual initiatives. For years\, the Post has been a driving force behind community support efforts in Laurens County\, working year-round to raise funds and lend a hand where it’s needed most. From assisting veterans and their families to supporting local schools and civic projects\, Post 25’s members dedicate countless hours to service. \nOne of their top priorities each year is their Christmas project for local children\, which provides toys and gifts to families who might otherwise go without during the holiday season. The Toy Run plays a crucial role in making that project a success\, collecting toys and donations that go directly toward bringing joy to children in the community. \nKevin Farnsworth\, Post 25 member and Toy Run organizer\, shared\, “This event is close to our hearts because it brings people together to do something meaningful for local kids. Every toy and every dollar stays right here in Laurens County to help families who need it the most. It’s amazing to see the generosity of this community year after year.” \nRiders from near and far participate in the Toy Run\, filling Main Street with the sound of engines and the spirit of giving. The event has grown steadily each year\, thanks to the generosity of participants and community members who understand the impact of Post 25’s work. \nAmerican Legion Post 25’s commitment extends far beyond the holiday season. Their year-round fundraising efforts support a range of community projects\, from sponsoring youth programs to aiding veterans in need. The Toy Run serves as a reminder of the power of collective goodwill—and how one ride can help make Christmas special for hundreds of local kids.

SUMMARY:‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ author\, environmental biologist Kimmerer to speak Nov. 5
DESCRIPTION:Robin Wall Kimmerer\, author of the best-selling nonfiction book “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge\, and the Teachings of Plants\,” will deliver the inaugural address for the Furman Humanities Center Distinguished Lecture Series on Wednesday\, Nov. 5\, at 6:45 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus. The event is free and open to the public. \nNamed among Time Magazine’s Most Influential People of 2025\, Kimmerer\, a 2022 MacArthur Fellow\, is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and is the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. She is the Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. \nHer talk\, “Just Environments\, Native Futures\, and Braiding Sweetgrass\,” draws from her 2013 book\, “Braiding Sweetgrass\,” which won the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award\, and her latest work\, “The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World.” \nHer presentation invites people to reflect on how they might use their human gifts and responsibilities in support of mutual thriving in a time of ecological crisis\, said Michele Speitz\, director of the Furman Humanities Center and professor of English literature. \nKaren Allen\, associate professor of sustainability science and anthropology\, and Jason Levitt ’26\, public health major and president of Furman’s Native American and Indigenous Peoples Association\, will introduce Kimmerer. \nAllen believes Kimmerer’s work offers hope in trying times. “Kimmerer asks us to do what we do best in the Furman community and a liberal arts world: to think from another perspective\, to imagine the question we haven’t yet learned how to ask\,” she said. \n“As someone who’s living out my own journey reconnecting with my Indigenous roots and understanding health and wellness\, I find Dr. Kimmerer’s teachings inspiring\,” said Levitt\, a 2025 Udall Scholar. “Her work reminds us that healing\, whether it’s people or the planet\, begins with relationship\, respect and reciprocity.” \nKimmerer’s books have won wide critical acclaim. In addition to “The Serviceberry” and “Braiding Sweetgrass\,” she is author of children’s book “Bud Finds Her Gift\,” and her first book\, “Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses\,” was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for outstanding natural history writing. Other works have appeared in Orion and Whole Terrain as well as in numerous scientific journals. \nIn 2022\, “Braiding Sweetgrass” was adapted for young adults by Monique Gray Smith. The new edition reinforces Kimmerer’s belief that greater ecological understanding stems from listening to the earth’s oldest teachers: the plants around us. \nSponsors for Kimmerer’s visit include The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities and the departments of Earth\, Environmental\, and Sustainability Sciences; English; and Religion; and the Environmental Studies Interdisciplinary Minor. The Furman Humanities Center acknowledges generous support from the Head\, Reid and Sisk Endowed Lecture Funds. \nFollowing Kimmerer’s address and brief Q&A session\, Furman will join M. Judson Booksellers for a book signing session.

SUMMARY:Clinton Canopy’s Annual Daffodil Planting
DESCRIPTION:Fall is here\, and Clinton Canopy is ready to bring the community together for a meaningful tradition. On Saturday\, November 8\, 2025\, Clinton Canopy will host its third annual Daffodils for Remembrance event\, planting 600 daffodil bulbs along Highway 72 at Clinton Elementary School. \nDaffodils mark the arrival of spring\, and their bright yellow color symbolizes remembrance. Each year\, these resilient flowers return\, bringing a burst of color that represents hope\, renewal\, and beauty. This year’s bulbs are funded through the Community Assistance Grant. \nResidents are invited to participate by signing up for a free set of daffodil bulbs in memory of a loved one. Dedicating bulbs is a special way to honor a friend\, co-worker\, or family member. Names of those remembered will be listed on the Clinton Canopy website. \nTo sign up\, visit www.clintoncanopy.org and follow the link to “Daffodils for Remembrance.” Participants are asked to join the planting event on November 8 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Parking will be available in the Clinton Elementary School lot at 800 Chestnut Street. \nFor those who wish to participate but cannot attend on planting day\, Clinton Canopy offers two options: schedule an appointment to plant bulbs earlier in the week or arrange for volunteers to plant the bulbs on your behalf. \nOver the past two years\, Clinton Canopy has planted bulbs in several key community spaces\, including the “V” at Willard Road and North Adair Street and along the railroad tracks in the historic downtown. These vibrant plantings have become a welcome sign of spring across the city. \n“This event has grown each year\, and it’s been so meaningful to see families\, students\, and neighbors come together to plant bulbs in memory of their loved ones\,” said Heather Tiller\, Clinton Canopy member. “Every spring\, the blooms remind us of those we’ve honored and the shared beauty we’ve created as a community.” \nThis year marks the third planting\, and Clinton Canopy plans to expand the tradition to additional sites in the future. Local residents and businesses are also encouraged to plant bulbs on their own properties to help spread the spirit of remembrance throughout Clinton.
