Williams is an award-winning columnist and prolific author who unearths the treasures of Georgetown County’s African American heritage. Among several other titles\, Williams is the author of Ebony Effects: 150 Unknown Facts about Blacks in Georgetown\, SC\, a book that has been reprinted multiple times\, and As I Travel Along: The Story of Harriet Tubman and James Bowley. He was instrumental in bringing Wesley Wofford’s inspiring sculpture “Harriet Tubman: Journey to Freedom” to Georgetown\, where it was placed on public display at Rainey Park for several months. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carvers Bay Library (13048 Choppee Road\, Hemingway\, SC 29554)\, as part of “A Glorious Cause\,” Pelor Jemonia Richards will describe the roots and resilience of Gullah people living in the South Carolina Lowcountry during the colonial era. Richards is a Gullah storyteller and historian who owns and operates Gullah Goodz & Gifts. She is a member of Georgetown 250 and helped organize the Sweet Potato Festival in November 2025 in partnership with South Carolina 250 and the Slave Dwelling Project. \nThe Georgetown County Library (GCL) will host a series of 20 public educational programs and exhibits as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative of the Georgetown County Library.” The programs\, which will be free and open to the public\, will take place at each of GCL’s 5 facilities across Georgetown County from March 2026 through June 2026. The project is made possible by a $39\,300 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL).

DESCRIPTION:Embrace the summer solstice during Yoga Fest at James Island County Park! This family-friendly event celebrates summer and community\, with activities and entertainment on Thursday\, June 18 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. \nThe Summer Solstice is a time to reconnect with each other and nature as the sun rises to the highest point in the sky. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for early access to the event’s wellness village and prize drawings. AcroCharlestonSC will perform Acro Yoga at 6 p.m.\, followed by adult yoga classes and kids’ yoga classes presented by Empowered Minds from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Reggae band Mystic Vibrations will perform from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.\, with an Acro yoga workshop held concurrently. All ages and abilities\, including beginners\, are welcome. \nEarly registration for Yoga Fest is $30 for ages 13 and older. Kids 12 and under are free and not required to register (registered chaperone required). On-site registration will be available for $35. Groups of 10 or more can receive a 20% discount when purchasing all tickets in advance at the same time.
