Legend has it Mozart completed this overture on the very morning of the opera’s 1787 Prague premiere\, and you can feel that crackling\, last‑minute urgency in the writing. It’s Mozart the dramatist in a nutshell: danger and delight sharing the same stage. \nAt the heart of the night is Violin Concerto No. 3\, performed by Joanna Mulfinger\, our Principal Second Violin and the orchestra’s Stuart P. Bowne Endowed Chair. A Greenville native and longtime leader on our stage\, Joanna is beloved for her luminous sound and expressive poise — and this concerto fits her like a glove. Written in 1775 during Mozart’s Salzburg years\, the Third brims with youthful charm and operatic grace. You’ll hear it in the opening movement’s elegant\, vocal‑style themes and in the Adagio’s tender\, aria‑like lines — music that sings as if from the opera house. The finale dances with folkish\, playful character (listen for quicksilver exchanges between soloist and orchestra)\, a reminder of Mozart’s joy in transforming popular styles into high art. In the Gunter’s intimate acoustics\, the concerto becomes a conversation — and you’re close enough to catch every smile. \nWe close with Symphony No. 40 in G minor\, one of only two symphonies Mozart wrote in a minor key and a work that seems to glow from within. Composed in the astonishing summer of 1788\, when he created his final three symphonies in quick succession\, No. 40 blends urgency and elegance in equal measure. Its famous opening\, with sighing figures that seem to press forward restlessly\, feels almost confessional — a glimpse of private emotion shaped with impeccable craft. Mozart later revised the score to include clarinets\, enriching the symphony’s color and deepening its warmth; in a hall like the Gunter\, that timbral glow registers beautifully. SUMMARY:Hike Hobcaw: Clambank
DESCRIPTION:Visit one of the most studied estuaries in the world in this 4-mile hike through the salt marsh of North Inlet. The group will travel by bus to the forest edge where the hike begins. The marsh causeway will lead to Clambank Landing- an Indigenous Peoples shell midden that later housed the duck hunting cabins for Bernard Baruch and his guests. In the distance\, participants will see North Island and part of Hobcaw Beach\, where Belle Baruch watched for German spies during World War II. Pictures and stories of the history and ecology will be shared. \nParticipants will need to dress for the weather\, wear closed-toe shoes\, and bring bug spray\, snack\, and water. Program is weather dependent. (Exertion level: High impact – hiking\, standing for long periods\, walking on uneven terrain) \n$38 per person. Often\, the roads are extremely rough and rutted\, a situation which will jostle riders on the bus. More details will be emailed to you prior to the cleanup. \nKeep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB) started the Spotless Service Saturday initiative to address highly littered areas with monthly cleanups hosted by our team! Cleanup locations rotate each month in the areas KMB serves: Richland County\, Lexington County\, the City of Columbia\, and the Town of Irmo. This event grew from a collaboration with the USC Service Saturday program. All residents\, both individuals and groups\, are encouraged to join the KMB team and USC students in these monthly cleanups. \nAll supplies (safety vests\, cloth gloves\, litter grabbers\, and bags) will be provided. Please dress comfortably\, wear sunscreen if appropriate\, and wear closed toe\, closed heal shoes. We will be cleaning a river so be sure to bring water shoes or shoes you feel comfortable in the water with.

The journey begins with a bus ride to Michau Plantation\, where staff and knowledgeable docents lead hikers along wooded trails to the historic Clubhouse Corner and the expansive 1\,000-Acre Rice Field. Long before the property became part of the Baruch lands\, this area was leased by the Annandale Gun Club as a premier hunting destination. Among its notable visitors was President Grover Cleveland\, who famously became stuck in the nearby pluff mud during one of his hunting excursions. Along the way\, discover the stories behind the area’s historic road names and visit a rare surviving rice field box trunk—a remarkable reminder of the region’s rice-growing past. The hike also explores the intertwined histories of rice cultivation\, slavery\, and the coastal ecosystem\, offering a deeper understanding of the people and landscapes that shaped this remarkable place. \nParticipants will need to dress for the weather\, wear closed-toe shoes\, and bring water. Program is weather dependent. (Exertion level: High impact – standing\, walking on uneven terrain) \n$38 per person.
