SUMMARY:Family Fun: Sand\, Surf\, and Science at Hobcaw Barony
DESCRIPTION:Start the New Year by doing some science at Hobcaw Beach! After a bus ride\, participants will explore the undeveloped beach by searching for sand crabs\, examining the boneyard beach\, and trying to catch some critters in the surf. Upon returning to the Discovery Center\, participants will examine water samples\, sand\, and even shells under microscopes to investigate all of the smallest details. \nRecommended for children ages 6 and up; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Participants may want to bring a water bottle. (Exertion level: Moderate impact – walking on uneven terrain\, standing) \n$15 per child (age 3+)\, $25 per adult. Reservations required: hobcawbarony.org/events(opens in new tab) \nPlease note that tour participants travel via a 14-person passenger bus on rustic roads comprised of sand and dirt. Often\, the roads are extremely rough and rutted\, a situation which will jostle riders on the bus. Although the staff at Hobcaw Barony tries to keep them smooth\, due to changeable weather and other factors\, the condition of the rural roadways cannot be guaranteed to be even.

This special guided tour explores these often-overlooked places and the people who called them home. Visit the historic Friendfield Village Church\, the ruins of a rice mill\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and land once owned by Joseph and Theodosia Burr Alston. Along the way\, historical photographs and firsthand accounts help bring each community to life\, revealing the rich history\, resilience\, and enduring legacy of the families who lived and worked at Hobcaw Barony. \nParticipants will need to dress for the weather\, wear closed-toe shoes and bring sunscreen\, bug spray and water.
