SUMMARY:Sept. Lunch and Learn: "Unearthing Fort Rutledge"
DESCRIPTION:Tucked away on the edge of Clemson University’s campus are the remains of the Cherokee town of Esseneca and Fort Rutledge. Most people passing by the old monument near the site are unaware of the history. On August 1\, 1776\, a small battle occurred at Esseneca between the South Carolina militia and British/Cherokee force. Following the skirmish\, the militia destroyed the town and built Fort Rutledge. The fort played an important role in the American Revolution serving as a staging area for patriot expeditions. It also served as a mechanism of settler colonialism\, further displacing the Cherokee from their home. The British “destroyed” the fort in 1780\, and nature buried what was left over the centuries. This history is little remembered. \nIn 2021\, Clemson faculty and students partnered with the National Park Service and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to unearth what was left of the fort. Yet we may also claim this as a pivotal moment toward to rebirth of Indigenous political innovation\, activism\, and assertion of right to autonomy and self-determination. \nPresented by Dr. James F. Brooks\, Carl and Sally Gable Distinguished Professor of History at University of Georgia\, this illustrated talk looks at how the collapse of Reconstruction in the Deep South prefigured a century of rebirth and survivance among the 575 Indian Nations resident in our United States today. \nPresented in person and virtually. The annual tournament brings anglers and the community together to enjoy a day of saltwater fishing while raising funds to support local breast cancer patients through After Care Essentials. \nThe Carolina Lady Anglers are currently seeking local businesses and individuals interested in supporting the tournament through sponsorships and donations. Proceeds from Fishing For the Cure benefit local breast cancer patients\, continuing the club’s longstanding commitment to giving back to the Charleston community. \nThe mission of the Carolina Lady Anglers is to raise funds to help those affected by breast cancer while fostering good sportsmanship\, promoting conservation and encouraging participation in saltwater fishing. \nThe tournament is open to men\, women and children of all ages. A Captain’s Meeting and registration will be held Wednesday\, September 23\, at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Rifle Club\, located at 2221 Heriot Street in Charleston. The tournament will take place Saturday\, September 26 and the weigh-in will be held from 5–6 p.m. at the Charleston Rifle Club. An awards ceremony will follow the weigh-in. \nAdult entry is $40\, while youth ages 12 and under may enter for $15. Entry includes a tournament T-shirt\, bucket\, dinner and beverages. The event will also feature a kids raffle\, regular raffle and silent auction prizes\, along with an opportunity to participate in the tournament Calcutta. \nThis year’s eligible species include King Mackerel\, Spanish Mackerel\, Flounder\, Sheepshead\, Trout\, Ladyfish and Dogfish\, with a Mystery Fish also to be announced at the Captain’s Meeting. Awards will be presented across multiple species categories\, along with Outstanding Male\, Female\, Youth Male and Youth Female Angler awards. \nIn addition to the fishing competition\, the Captain’s Meeting and tournament events provide an opportunity for anglers\, families\, sponsors and community members to come together for a great cause. Food will be provided by Swig & Swine\, and live music will be performed by Butch Martin. \nThe Carolina Lady Anglers have a long history of supporting local breast cancer patients through Fishing For the Cure.
