In the early 1970s\, Bernstein and Bob Woodward broke the Watergate story for The Washington Post\, leading to the resignation of President Richard Nixon and setting the standard for modern investigative reporting\, for which they and the Post were awarded a Pulitzer Prize. \nBernstein is the author of five best-selling books and is also an on-air political analyst for CNN and a contributing editor of Vanity Fair magazine. His most recent book\, Chasing History: A Kid in the Newsroom\, recalls his beginnings as an audacious teenage newspaper reporter in the nation’s capital – a winning tale of scrapes\, gumshoeing and American bedlam. \nWith Woodward\, Bernstein wrote two classic bestsellers: All the President’s Men (also a movie starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman)\, about their coverage of the Watergate story\, and The Final Days\, about the denouement of the Nixon presidency. \nBernstein is also the author of a memoir of his family’s experience in the McCarthy era\, entitled  Loyalties: A Son’s Memoir\, and co-author of the definitive papal biography\, His Holiness: John Paul II and the History of Our Time\, which detailed the pope’s pivotal and often clandestine role in the fall of communism. \nBernstein was born and raised in Washington\, D.C.\, and began his journalism career at age 16 as a copyboy\, becoming a reporter at 19. DESCRIPTION:The College of Charleston will host the second annual Maroon Walk for Juneteenth on June 5\, 2023. The event\, which is free and open to the public\, will begin 10:30 a.m. and feature a half-mile walk exploring sites of African American history on the College’s campus. \nThe Maroon Walk for Juneteenth was introduced to the College in 2022 to recognize the federal observation of June 19\, 1865\, the date when “all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are\, and henceforward shall be free.” Congress voted to recognize June 19 as a federal holiday in 2021. \nWe wanted to acknowledge all of the sacred spaces on campus where people of African descent have contributed to the campus culture – in the past\, present and into the future\,” says Kameelah Martin\, dean of the Graduate School\, of the inaugural event. “We had a great turnout of faculty and staff in 2022 and want to encourage community members to participate in 2023.” \n“The Maroon Walk is meaningful for several reasons\,” says Charissa Owens\, director of diversity education and training in the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID). “In the same spirit of civil rights icon Ms. Opal Lee’s walk for Juneteenth\, it’s a higher form of lawfulness to counter state legislature status with observing the federal holiday. The walk is designed to be an empowering\, culturally affirming and physically active opportunity to recognize the federal observation of Juneteenth at the College of Charleston.” \nStarting May 23\, 2023\, up to 25 campus members can purchase the CofC Pan-African T-shirt at the College of Charleston Bookstore for $10 plus tax. Participants are encouraged to wear Pan-African T-shirts to show Juneteenth pride. \nThe Maroon Walk for Juneteenth will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and take the following route: \n\nAvery Research Center for African American History and Culture at 125 Bull Street\nEdward Leon Guenveur House and Lauretta Goodall-Guenveur Garden at 57 Coming Street\nSolar Pavilion behind 65 Coming Street near the Pi Kappa Phi Bell Tower\nRivers Green Memorial behind Addlestone Library\nKnox-Lesesne House at 14 Green Way\nRandolph Hall\nSeptima P. The caucus used the College’s public history project and self-guided tour\, Discovering Our Past\, to identify sites along the route that best educate participants about the history of the campus. \n“It’s a great example of how affinity groups on campus empower employees to participate and shape the way the College recognizes and honors cultural holidays\,” says Owens. “Finally\, it’s a culturally meaningful and visible manifestation of our core value in diversity\, equity and inclusion.” \n

SUMMARY:Proposals to Reduce Gun Violence\, a discussion with local leaders
DESCRIPTION:Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in South Carolina and in the United States. \nOn Sunday\, May 7\, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the College of Charleston\, leaders from different political persuasions\, elected officials and the public will come together to discuss community-generated proposals to reduce gun violence in our state. \nFounded in 2019 by local activist Butch Kennedy\, the Tri-County Gun Violence Coordinating Council (GVCC)\, a gun-violence prevention group based in North Charleston\, works with members of the community to galvanize every possible resource to prevent\, intervene\, investigate and suppress gun violence. Jennifer Baker\, College of Charleston philosophy professor has been working with the GVCC and conducting forums says\, “The previous forums\, where the ideas being presented this Sunday were generated\, included hearing from decision-makers\, gun owners\, and also victims of gun violence\, so the ideas that have been generated have come from a really special mix of perspectives. DESCRIPTION:As many as 828 million people around the world go to bed hungry every night\, including many in the South Carolina Lowcountry. But everyone should have access to adequate food. \nTo address the state of global hunger and food insecurity in the Lowcountry\, the College of Charleston will host the inaugural Food Security Summit on Friday\, March 24\, 2023\, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center (c)\, room 101. \nSpeakers include: \n\nDan Glickman\, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and longtime member of the House Agriculture Committee\, with Rebecca Middleton\, chief advocacy and engagement officer\, World Food Program USA\, will explain how the world produces enough food to feed everyone on the planet\, but nearly one-third of all food produced globally each year is lost or wasted. They will discuss supply chain issues and the challenges food insecurity presents.\nBarron Segar\, president and CEO of World Food Program USA\, will talk about the unprecedented hunger around the world resulting from conflict\, climate change\, natural disasters and economic pressures\, and what World Food Program USA is doing to alleviate food insecurity.\nNick Osborne\, president and CEO of the Lowcountry Food Bank\, and Shannon Maynard\, executive director of the Congressional Hunger Center\, will speak about food insecurity. Osborne will discuss food insecurity in the Lowcountry and what the Lowcountry Food Bank is doing to decrease food insecurity in coastal South Carolina by 25% by 2025. Maynard will share how the Congressional Hunger Center is taking a grassroots approach to ending hunger by training more than 1\,000 new leaders in the movement.\nGresham Barrett\, senior advisor to the executive director\, the World Food Programme and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the South Carolina House of Representatives\, will give his perspective on the issue of food insecurity globally and in South Carolina.\n\nThe inaugural Food Security Summit is free and open to the public.
