SUMMARY:Hike Hobcaw: Clubhouse Corner
DESCRIPTION:Venture into one of the Barony’s most secluded and fascinating landscapes on this guided hike through its southern reaches. The journey begins with a bus ride to Michau Plantation\, where staff and knowledgeable docents lead hikers along wooded trails to the historic Clubhouse Corner and the expansive 1\,000-Acre Rice Field. Long before the property became part of the Baruch lands\, this area was leased by the Annandale Gun Club as a premier hunting destination. Among its notable visitors was President Grover Cleveland\, who famously became stuck in the nearby pluff mud during one of his hunting excursions. Along the way\, discover the stories behind the area’s historic road names and visit a rare surviving rice field box trunk—a remarkable reminder of the region’s rice-growing past. The hike also explores the intertwined histories of rice cultivation\, slavery\, and the coastal ecosystem\, offering a deeper understanding of the people and landscapes that shaped this remarkable place. \nParticipants will need to dress for the weather\, wear closed-toe shoes\, and bring water. Program is weather dependent. (Exertion level: High impact – standing\, walking on uneven terrain) \n$38 per person. Often\, the roads are extremely rough and rutted\, a situation which will jostle riders on the bus. Although the staff at Hobcaw Barony tries to keep them smooth\, due to changeable weather and other factors\, the condition of the rural roadways cannot be guaranteed to be smooth.
