SUMMARY:The Doctors Blackwell | Joseph I. Waring Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join the Waring Historical Library for the 2023 Joseph I. Waring Lecture featuring Janice P. Nimura’s presentation on the “Doctors Blackwell.” \nThe world recoiled at the notion of a woman doctor\, yet Elizabeth Blackwell persisted. In 1849\, she became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. Her achievement made her an icon. “I am convinced that a new and nobler era is dawning\, for Medicine\,” she wrote\, but her sister Emily\, eternally eclipsed\, was the more brilliant physician. Together\, they founded the first hospital staffed entirely by women\, in New York City. \nBoth sisters were tenacious and visionary\, but their convictions did not always align with the emergence of women’s rights – or with each other. “Doubt is disease\,” Elizabeth insisted. They prevailed against fierce resistance from the male establishment\, moving among Britain\, France and America during a tumultuous time of scientific discovery and civil war. Join us for the Waring Lecture to celebrate two complicated pioneers who exploded the limits of possibility. As Elizabeth predicted\, “a hundred years hence\, women will not be what they are now.” \nJanice P. Nimura received a Public Scholar Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in support of her work on “The Doctors Blackwell\,” a New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Biography. Her previous book\, “Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back\,” was a New York Times Notable Book of 2015. Her essays and book reviews have appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, Smithsonian and LitHub\, among other publications. \nThe lecture will take place on Tuesday\, March 7\, at 6 p.m. EST. This event is free and open to the public. This event will be a hybrid event\, with in-person and virtual components. The in-person event will be held in the MUSC Drug Discovery Building Auditorium. Light refreshments will be served. The virtual event will take place on Zoom. Seating is limited for the in-person event\, and registration is required by Monday\, March 6\, at 6 p.m. to reserve your seat. Please RSVP at https://bit.ly/2023-Waring \n  \nFor more information\, please visit waring.library.musc.edu\, email waringhl@musc.edu or call (843) 792-2288. \n

SUMMARY:Healing\, Mobility\, & Fugitive Logic: Revisiting Harriet Tubman as Both a Healer & Intellectual
DESCRIPTION:Waring Historical Library’s Black History Month Lecture to focus on a new perspective on Harriet Tubman \nDeirdre Cooper Owens\, Ph.D.\, will present the Waring Historical Library Society’s Black History Month Lecture focusing on Harriet Tubman’s contributions to medical history. As a historian of medicine\, Cooper Owens has documented the importance of Black women’s healing practices to the development of American medicine. In her presentation\, she will discuss Harriet Tubman’s contributions to the Black freedom struggle and highlight Tubman’s healing practices as a complement to her abolitionism. The event will be hosted by MUSC’s Waring Historical Library on Monday\, Feb. 6\, at 6:00 p.m. in the Drug Discovery Building Auditorium on the MUSC campus. \nCooper Owens\, the Linda and Charles Wilson Professor in the History of Medicine and director of the Humanities in Medicine program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, is one of two Black women in the nation who hold these positions. She is currently working on a popular biography of Harriet Tubman through the lens of disability and a monograph about the history of race\, medical discovery and the C-section. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, though reservations are required. Light refreshments will be served after the in-person event. Please RSVP at bit.ly/2023-BHML \nTo learn more\, please visit waring.library.musc.edu\, email waringhl@musc.edu or call (843) 792-2288.
