SUMMARY:Constellation Concert Series: Music in the Observatory
DESCRIPTION:This winter\, the South Carolina State Museum invites guests to experience an evening of live music in the Boeing Observatory for our Constellation Concert on Thursday\, January 23 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. This exciting event will feature South Carolina artist Danielle Howle\, who is a natural storyteller and is known for her ability to perform multiple genres of music\, including country-swamp-blues\, jazz\, southern rock and Americana. \nIn addition to the musical performance\, attendees will have the opportunity to view the night sky through the observatory’s historic 1926 Alvan Clark Telescope\, weather permitting. Guests can also enjoy a panoramic view of Columbia from the observatory terrace. \nDanielle Howle has released well over a dozen studio albums in a four-decade career that has traversed genres\, styles\, and cultures. She’s opened for legends like Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt. She was also a close friend of the late singer/songwriter Elliott Smith. \nTickets for the Constellation Concert Series featuring Danielle Howle are $35 for the general public and $28 for museum members.

DESCRIPTION:After-hours event features a discussion with chef and food writer\, Amethyst Ganaway\, along with special tastings of South Carolina cuisine.   \nThe South Carolina State Museum welcomed rising culinary star\, Amethyst Ganaway\, for Harvesting Heritage: A History of Black Culinary Traditions in the Palmetto State\, on Saturday\, May 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The special event\, the first in a yearlong collaboration with the renowned chef and food writer\, explores how women shape the way we eat and features heavy hors d’oeuvres and a specialty cocktail. \nDuring this evening\, guests will sample fresh takes on South Carolina culinary traditions\, including Lowcountry shrimp toast\, Upstate peach and pea salad\, PeeDee boiled peanuts\, Carolina Gold middlins and more and enjoy a special discussion with the up-and-coming South Carolina chef alongside renowned artist and storyteller Natalie Daise. \nBeginning in August\, Ganaway will hold a series of six programs at the State Museum exploring the different regions of South Carolina with chefs\, farmers\, policymakers\, and others. From tobacco culture and food traditions in the PeeDee to celebrating the culinary contributions of immigrant communities in our Upstate\, this new series will highlight the history and artistic expression evident in our food traditions. \n“I am so excited to partner with the State Museum to bring the stories\, artistry and living history of the foodways of the many African American communities across our state to life\,” says Ganaway. “I look forward to engaging with my neighbors within each region\, and to work alongside such a dedicated and established organization like the State Museum throughout 2024\, 2025\, and beyond.” \nBorn and raised in North Charleston\, Amethyst Ganaway has been featured in the New York Times\, Food & Wine\, Garden & Gun and more. Specializing in Southern and African American foodways and the foodways of the African Disapora\, Ganaway also recently headlined the Charleston Wine + Food festival. She uses her position as a chef and food writer to tell the stories of the region’s history\, culture\, art\, cuisine\, and environment. \nTickets for Harvesting Heritage: A History of Black Culinary Traditions in the Palmetto State are $50 for general public and $40 for museum members. SUMMARY:College Night at the State Museum
DESCRIPTION:College students from across the state are invited to experience the museum after hours. \nIn addition to exploring four floors of exhibitions highlighting South Carolina’s history\, college students will have the opportunity to see the stars with night sky viewing in the Boeing Observatory (weather permitting) and enjoy special laser light performances featuring the music of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé in the museum’s planetarium. \nGeneral admission for College Night is $5 with a valid student ID from a college or university.
