Pedestrian safety projects planned for this summer

Construction begins this summer on four infrastructure projects designed to improve safety and enhance connectivity.

The West Antrim Sidewalk project starts this week. Expect daytime lane closures.

  • The project extends from Laurens to Greenacre roads.
  • It features the removal of one lane to accommodate the construction of a new sidewalk.
  • It should be completed within three months.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail Pedestrian Bridge over Verdae has a preconstruction conference scheduled for June 18 with construction following in July.

  • Expect periodic lane closures.
  • Verdae Boulevard will be shut down for a few hours one night at a later date to set the structure over the roadway.
  • The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.

The Hudson Street Bridge Replacement construction it set to begin July 7. The bridge was damaged during Hurricane Helene.

  • The project managed by SCDOT is expected to be completed by October 2025.

Construction on the East North Streetscape project begins July 7. It includes a permanent closure of a westbound lane to create wider sidewalks and a landscaped buffer for a safer pedestrian connection between downtown and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

  • The project extends from Church Street to the East North/I-385 roadway name change.
  • Residents can expect a mix of nighttime and daytime lane closures.
  • Traffic will remain open in each direction throughout the project.
  • The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2025.
