Plans Running Smoothly for Horse Show/EARTH Fair
May 15, 2009LEXINGTON, SC – May 15, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Lexington is in the final stages for the Horse Show and EARTH Fair. This will be the 39th Annual Horse Show and for the first time will run concurrently with the EARTH Fair. EARTH is an acronym for Environment, Animals, Rotary, Technology, and History. Admission and parking are both free. Donations will be gladly accepted. There will be a concession stand where snacks may be purchased.
This event will be held on May 16 at the beautiful Red Bank Recreation Complex at 1159 Nazareth Road in Lexington beginning at 9AM and running until mid evening when all show classes have been completed. According to Horse Show Chairman Robert Murphy, The Lexington Rotary Horse Show has long been recognized as one of the premier shows in the state, There will be over 60 classes of competition.
Dream Riders, a therapeutic horseback riding program for people with special needs, will give demonstrations at 11AM and 2 PM.
Proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for area students and to date over $300,000 has been awarded. Recipients are nominated by school counselors and are based on performance and need.
This family adventure will feature a Hunter Jumper Horse Ring as well as a Walking Horse Ring. Many children will be able to watch peers their own age compete. There will also be BMX bike races going on during the day.
The Lexington County Bar Association, an event sponsor made up of local lawyers, is volunteering to help the Lexington Rotary Club raise more scholarship money with a dunking booth. Rotary is looking forward to the success of Dunking Lawyers for Dollars.
The Lexington County Museum will have activities for young people. Greyhound Pets of America will be there as well as Project Pets. Visitors will also be able to safely view the sun through modern telescopes furnished by the Midlands Astronomy Club.
Adults will enjoy the silent auction and wine tasting from 5 to 7PM. There will be a small charge for the wine tasting event with the proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
Keep The Midlands Beautiful will give away sunflower seeds and provide demonstrations on how to plant and take care of flowers and compost. Also, Clemson Extension Horticulture Program will have information about fire ants and planting a vegetable garden.
Exhibits include a helicopter and other military units, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and a Hybrid Vehicle from SCE&G. There will also be representatives from the Lexington County Fire Marshall. Two Antique Auto Clubs will have many old cars. The Lexington County EMS will provide blood pressure and diabetic screening.
