SCANPO Announces Public Policy Training

September 18, 2008

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations (SCANPO) will present the 2008 Public Policy Conference: Nonprofit Law, Lobbying & the Legislative Agenda on October 14, 2008 from 8:30 am – 4:14 pm at the SC Archives and History Center in Columbia.   This event is a full-day, public policy conference for community and nonprofit leaders across the state.  Registration is $60 for members and $100 for non-members.  To register, go to www.scanpo.org.

South Carolina’s nonprofit sector is vital to the well-being of our state’s citizens, yet the sector is at times not at the forefront of critical policy development. SCANPO, in partnership with The Nord Family Foundation, co-sponsors and expert speakers, are providing a forum to discuss these critical policy issues facing our state and nation and to foster involvement in civic, policy and political processes.

The Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest (CLPI) will open the day with a keynote session, Nonprofit Introduction to Lobbying where nonprofit leaders will learn why nonprofits should lobby and the IRS rules that nonprofits must follow.

Following the keynote, participants will attend concurrent sessions on issues such as the basics of grassroots lobbying and how to win on your issues, the Ethics, Government Accountability and Campaign Reform Act of 1991, legislative priorities for SC nonprofits, healthcare challenges, understanding the laws and emotions that govern the legislative appropriations process, and using the S.C. Legislature On-line Website.

The South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations (SCANPO) is the only statewide organization that brings together charitable nonprofits to strengthen the effectiveness of the state’s nonprofit community.  SCANPO’s mission is to serve, support, and strengthen nonprofit organizations for a better South Carolina.  For information on SCANPO, please call 803-929-0399 or visit www.scanpo.org.
