The Keenan High School Jazz Band performed as almost 500 people gathered at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to celebrate the achievements of a woman who truly puts other people first and demonstrates what it means to LIVE UNITED every day.
United Way has benefited from all of Martha’s hard work and dedication in her various endeavors, but Martha has also benefited from United Way, said Joe Anderson, United Way of the Midlands 2000 Humanitarian of the Year. She has given so generously over so many years; she is a trailblazer and someone who truly wants to make a difference.
Everyone in the room was standing as Martha Scott Smith stepped up to the podium to share her remarks.
There are no words to express my gratitude for this recognition, said Smith, Director of Public Affairs/Foundation-AT&T-SE. Time Warner, the signature sponsor of this event, is one of our competitors, but tonight we put our differences aside to LIVE UNITED and share with others the importance of service.
Smith thanked her family, her friends, her childhood community of Greenview and her AT&T family and humbly accepted her award on behalf of all the people who are blessings in her life.
Faith, family and friends are my priorities and when I say family and friends, that is more than just the Webster’s definition, she said. God has provided each of us with opportunities to give of ourselves. We have to listen and realize it’s not just about money, it’s about the importance of giving however we can.
The crowd of people that waited to greet Martha following the program was evidence of the tremendous impact she has on everyone around her.
Martha Scott Smith is the kind of woman who makes the Midlands a better place for us all, said Mac Bennett, United Way of the Midlands President and CEO. United Way is pleased to honor her this evening.
