Seventh & Eighth Graders to Explore Opportunities in Technology, Engineering & Science

AIKEN, SC – There is still space available for students interested in attending Camp Success, an academic day camp for middle school students interested in science, technology, engineering and math. Hosted by the Silver Crescent Foundation, the Ruth Patrick Science Center at USC Aiken and Aiken Technical College, Camp Success is a fun and engaging program that helps young people explore how science and math make the world a better place to live.

During the week-long camp, which runs Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 26 from 9 am to 5 pm, campers will participate in a number of fun activities and games where they will test their creative skills and discover ways to make technology work for them in the design of new products much like engineers and designers do in the real world every day.  From wacky design contests to team building exercises to answering those lingering questions of when will I ever use math (or science) in real life, the campers will gain exposure to how companies use creativity, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop solutions to issues we as consumers face every day – from longer lasting tires, to faster computers, and even better tasting food.

Working alongside university and college professors, the students will participate in a number of Discovery Workshops and learning labs where they test scientific concepts as well as venture out on local field trips where they can witness these concepts in action and learn about a broad range of career paths along the way.

Camp Success provides an up-close and personal look at how engineering innovation and technology breakthroughs enhance our lives, said Karen Owens, President of the Silver Crescent Foundation. Through the exciting activities and projects planned, we hope to demonstrate to these young students how their brain power has the ability to make people’s lives better.

Parents of rising seventh and eight grade students interested in attending Camp Success can register online at http://rpsec.usca.edu/campsuccess/. The cost to attend Camp Success is $100, and there is a $50 application fee.
