University to Host Second Annual Community Partner Breakfast Sept. 29
September 1, 2009COLUMBIA, SC – September 1, 2009 – The University of South Carolina community and Columbia service agencies will come together for the second annual Community Partner Breakfast Tuesday, Sept. 29.
The event, part of the university’s efforts to celebrate and build sustainable community partnerships, aims to connect campus representatives with local agencies to enhance the success of programs like academic service-learning.
The breakfast will be held from 7:30 – 9 a.m. in the Russell House University Union ballroom. It is free and open to faculty, staff and students involved or interested in campus-community partnerships and to professionals from service agencies in Columbia.
Online registration is required by Sept. 21. To register, go to www.sc.edu/servicelearning.
The university has seen a steady growth in service-learning, which both enhances students’ academic experiences in classrooms and laboratories and encourages extracurricular collaboration among faculty, students and community service agencies.
“Building on last year’s highly successful event, we want the breakfast to spark new ideas among faculty, staff, students and community organizations to create lasting service-learning partnerships that produce innovative and academically stimulating solutions to some of the our most pressing local and regional needs,” said Jimmie Gahagan, assistant vice provost for student engagement.
Last year, service-learning classes were featured in 18 academic programs among seven of the university’s 15 colleges and schools.
