DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music at Lander University invites the community to join the Lander Chamber Orchestra and University Singers for a concert Tuesday\, Dec. 2\, at 7 p.m.\, in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium on the Lander campus. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe Chamber Orchestra is under the direction of Prof. Amy Blackwood\, who holds a Master of Music degree in accompanying and chamber music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the fall of 2011\, Blackwood became a full-time accompanist at Lander\, where she works with singers\, instrumentalists and choral ensembles. \nMeanwhile\, the University Singers carry on a longstanding tradition of choral singing at Lander. The ensemble is under the direction of Prof. Keith Jameson\, director of choral activities at Lander. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Lander University Jazz Ensemble for their first performance of the 2025-26 academic year Thursday\, Nov. 13\, at 7 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe Lander Jazz Ensemble is a 23-piece big band that performs standard repertoire\, including compositions originally performed by Duke Ellington\, Charles Mingus\, Miles Davis\, Glen Miller\, Count Basie\, Bob Mintzer and many other notable jazz artists. The ensemble explores a wide range of different styles of jazz music representing different eras of the genre\, including Afro-Cuban\, swing\, pop\, bebop\, cha-cha and mambo\, with the idea of exposing student musicians – and the audience – to the various kinds of grooves\, rhythms\, melodies\, harmonies and tempos. \nThe concert will also be the first for the ensemble under the direction of Dr. Lauren Diaz\, visiting assistant professor of music education at Lander. In addition to music\, this performance will provide Lander and Greenwood a chance to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Diaz.

SUMMARY:Lander University and Old Main Singers to Hold Spring Concert\, Bidding Farewell to Long-time Director
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Lander University Department of Music for an evening with Lander’s two choral ensembles. The University Singers and Old Main Singers will host a joint performance Sunday\, April 14\, at 4 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium at Lander. This concert is free and open to the public. \nLander’s University Singers and Old Main Singers will perform music from five centuries in this concert titled Journey: Choral Music for a Lifetime. Concert selections will include Randall Thompson’s “Allelluia\,” Claudio Monteverdi’s “Si ch’io vorrei morire\,” Hugo Alfven’s “Aftonen\,” Gerald Kemner’s “Now Shout!\,” Phil Mattson’s “Misty\,” Harry Somers’s “Feller from Fortune\,” Daniel Gawthrop’s “Sing Me to Heaven\,” and Freddie Mercury’s “Somebody to Love.” \nThe concert will also be the final collegiate choral conducting appearance of Dr. Chuck Neufeld\, professor of music\, who will be completing his 44-year journey as a director of choral ensembles with his retirement from Lander University at the end of the academic year. Neufeld has conducted collegiate choral ensembles for 33 years. He has served on Lander’s faculty as director of choral activities since 2010. Neufeld has led musical productions of the Greenwood Community Theatre and served as artistic director and conductor of the Laurens County Chorale for 14 years. He has performed in 43 of the 50 United States and in 12 European countries\, in venues such as Piccolo Spoleto Music Festival and the Moscow State Conservatory; with the Augusta Symphony\, the Aiken Symphony\, the Phoenix Symphony\, the Fort Worth Symphony and the Boston Pops; and with professional choirs such as the Phoenix Bach Choir\, the Vancouver Chamber Choir\, the Taylor Festival Choir and the Cecilia Ensemble. He has served as choral director in eight churches and given many solo oratorio performances. \n“Dr. Chuck Neufeld has ably led Lander’s choral groups\, taught music education courses\, and led voice lessons at the University and beyond\,” said Dr. Lucas McMillan\, interim dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Lander. “He has performed across the United States and in Russia with The Cecilia Ensemble. Most importantly\, Chuck has helped to mentor Lander alumni who now serve as choral directors in S.C. schools\, some of whom have won state-wide awards.” \nAt the conclusion of the concert\, Lander will celebrate the careers of both Dr. Chuck Neufeld and Dr. Judi Neufeld\, who will also retire from Lander after serving on Lander’s faculty since 2002\, and previously as the dean of the College of Education. SUMMARY:Lander University to Host Historian Vernon Burton
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Lander University College of Behavioral and Social Sciences for a lively conversation with Dr. Vernon Burton\, who currently serves as the Judge Matthew J. Perry Distinguished Chair of History at Clemson University. This event will take place Thursday\, Sept. 28\, at 6 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Burton will discuss his life and work as a historian\, reflect upon his most important books and share his thoughts about the culture and politics of the South. The event is free and open to the public. \nOrville Vernon Burton is the inaugural Judge Matthew J. Perry Distinguished Chair of History\, and is a professor of global Black studies\, sociology and anthropology\, and computer science at Clemson University. He directed the Clemson CyberInstitute from 2010 to 2016. In 2022\, Burton received the Clemson University Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research. In 2018\, he was part of the initial University Research\, Scholarship and Artistic Achievement Award group of scholars. In 2016\, he received the College of Architecture\, Arts and Humanities Dean’s Award for “Excellence in Research.” He received the college’s award for “Outstanding Achievement in Service” in 2019. \nBurton is a prolific author and scholar\, with more than twenty authored or edited books\, nearly three hundred articles and numerous digital humanities projects. His book\, “Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court” (Harvard University Press\, 2021)\, which was co-authored with Armand Derfner\, has been featured at numerous regional and national academic conferences related to the social sciences. Meanwhile\, “The Age of Lincoln” (Farrar\, Straus\, and Giroux\, 2007) won the Chicago Tribune Heartland Literary Award for Nonfiction. One reviewer proclaimed\, “If the Civil War era was America’s ‘Iliad\,’ then historian Orville Vernon Burton is our latest Homer.” His book\, “In My Father’s House Are Many Mansions: Family and Community in Edgefield\, South Carolina” (University of North Carolina Press\, 1985)\, was featured at sessions of the Southern Historical Association and the Social Science History Association annual meetings. \nIn addition to Burton\, the event will also include presentations by Dr. Bobby J. Donaldson\, director of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research\, and Christopher B. Thomas\, director of the Benjamin Mays Historical Preservation Site. \nA reception will follow. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Lander University for a Constitution Day discussion featuring Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. This event will take place on Monday\, Sept. 18\, at 5:30 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium\, and is free and open to the public. \nThe Honorable Trevor N. McFadden is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Nominated by former President Donald J. Trump\, he was confirmed by the Senate in 2017. \nJudge McFadden earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College in Illinois\, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. He clerked for Judge Steven Colloton\, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit\, and then joined the United States Department of Justice\, where he served as Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General and as Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia. Judge McFadden became a partner at Baker & McKenzie in Washington\, D.C.\, where he focused on white collar investigations. After four years in private practice\, he returned to the Justice Department\, where he was Deputy Assistant Attorney General and acted as the second-in-command of the Criminal Division.
