SUMMARY:The Flood - Solo Exhibition by Melissa Haviland
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Haviland’s The Flood draws on the long history of “bluing\,” a process in which blue dyes were added to paper and textiles to counteract yellowing which improved perceived quality of the material. From 15th-century European paper made from worn rags to the more modern blue-tinted laundry brighteners\, bluing has long suggested improvement\, and value—even when it only disguised what may lay beneath. \nIn The Flood\, Haviland reimagines this history through the lens of climate disaster. The towering\, immersive installations evoke the sensation of being swept away\, as if the ocean had flooded through the space. This work embodies both the chaos of everyday stresses\, bedtimes\, deadlines; and the immense weight of global crises: climate refugees\, rising seas\, water scarcity\, and environmental collapse. The blue in The Flood echoes the promise of enhancement\, even as we are submerged in questions of survival: how do we stay afloat? \nGreenville Center for Creative Arts affirms the importance of artistic freedom and the power of creative expression — including work that may provoke\, challenge\, or confront. This exhibition contains content that some viewers may find unsettling or emotionally intense. Viewer discretion is advised for all ages.

Mental Health Moonshot stands as a collective outcry for equity for those captured by mental health struggles. This exhibition is more than a showcase; it is a beacon of hope piercing the darkness of mental health struggles. Walt’s Waltz in partnership with GCCA is committed to erasing stigmas and reducing suffering as they work as a catalyst for change. Jess Abbott\, GCCA’s CEO\, states\, “Amidst all the colors and creations in the arts\, lies a canvas for healing. At GCCA\, we recognize the profound intersection between mental health and artistic expression. As the first Stigma Free Zone in Greenville\, SC\, we proudly champion the power of creativity in nurturing mental wellness. Our commitment extends beyond our walls\, as we embark on an enlightening journey with ‘Walt’s Waltz’ in 2024\, reaffirming our dedication to education and advocacy. Together\, let’s ensure that the vital dialogue surrounding mental health remains vibrant and unyielding.” \nWith a dual-fold theme of hope and resilience\, the exhibition delves into the triumphs and tribulations of individuals grappling with mental health conditions. As researchers push the boundaries of understanding underfunded fields including genetics and epigenetics\, there is hope for those facing treatment-resistant conditions. Similar to the ‘71 War of Cancer and now the Cancer Moonshot\, a Mental Health Moonshot is an essential declaration as behavioral health struggles are complicated. With the last words from her son\, “Mom\, sometimes people just don’t get better\,” Walt’s Waltz founder\, Susan Crooks\, and the entire Walt’s Waltz team invites you to them in their declaration “We must do better.” \nAbout the Artists & Advocates for Mental Health \nMental Health Moonshot is driven by a collective of artists who create artworks that advocate for mental health awareness and social change. The featured artists are Traci Wright Martin\, Will Crooks\, Kara Bender\, Aldo Muzzarelli\, Amanda Barbarito\, Elisa Golden\, Connie Lippert\, Terrell Washington\, Sherrill Hill\, Barbara Castenada\, Samantha Goss\, Tania Ro\, and local poet and psychiatrist Frank Clark\, whose poetry is paired with artist Lisa Teo’s work couriered to GCCA from Malaysia. SUMMARY:Mind Yourself by Lisa Cyckowski on display at GCCA
DESCRIPTION:Mind Yourself is a solo exhibition at GCCA featuring local Greenville artist Lisa Cyckowski. Her collection of over 30 paintings intertwine scenes of people in the ordinary moments that shape their lives. Cyckowski reflects on a passion for mental health\, seeking to unravel the complexities of human emotion that lives beneath the surface. Cyckowski’s paintings emanate a light-heartedness and whimsy\, drawing viewers into a world of their own. However\, as the figures twist and turn\, a sobering revelation emerges—her characters grapple with personal realities suggesting everything may not be as it appears on the surface. Rooted in genuine life experiences\, Cyckowski’s work offers reassurance and understanding in an uncertain world. Mind Yourself will be on display in GCCA’s Community Gallery until April 24th\, 2024. \nAdmission to GCCA is free and open to the public during normal gallery hours. Open gallery hours are Tuesdays – Fridays 9am-5pm & Saturdays 11am – 3pm. \nAbout the Artist\nLisa Cyckowski is a full-time art who lives in Travelers Rest\, South Carolina. Cyckowski uses a combination of self-study\, peer coaching\, and technical experimentation\, Lisa has successfully found a way to capture a thread of inner thoughts and feelings. Much of her work explores life\, motions\, and personal struggles. Lisa uses her art to bring attention to the importance of emotional health awareness and suicide prevention programs. A percentage of Lisa’s art sales proceeds have been donated back to the mental health community. Lisa has exhibited her artwork across South Carolina and throughout New Jersey. \nGCCA is located at 101 Abney St\, Grenville\, SC 29611.

DESCRIPTION:Join Invisible Planet exhibiting artists\, Kara Virginia Russo & Joseph Smolin\, in GCCA’s Main Gallery on Tuesday\, July 11th\, from 6 – 7 PM. Russo & Smolin will each be presenting a 30 minute demonstration in their respective mediums and styles. You will first get to see “Layering Techniques in Mixed Media” with Kara Virginia Russo where she will demonstrate techniques including wet in wet ink\, various resist methods\, unconventional media combinations\, and final dry media applications. These techniques can be immediately applied to add depth and interest to any style of art. Then Joseph Smolin will demonstrate “Character Creation through Shape & Symbol”. Smolin will demonstrate his process for character design\, focusing specifically on initial sketch conception. The demo will focus on both conceptual attributes and character form and feature. This can be applicable to any artist interested in iterative sketching\, character integration\, and how symbology can deepen their work. \n

SUMMARY:Invisible Planet
DESCRIPTION:Invisible Planet features exhibiting artists Virginia Russo and Joseph Smolin investigating themes of belonging through an imagined alternative world. Invisible Planet is an imaginary world that represents untouched beauty and the raw wonder of creation. \nRusso created “The Planet” which aims to be a refuge for neuro-divergent people who suffer from sensory issues and overstimulation. This world in her work is a mysterious and ethereal land filled with mountains\, cliffs\, mushrooms\, and an ever-present orange sun. Smolin’s experience growing up half-Jewish in the Deep South—Birmingham\, AL—is reflected in his symbology and exploration of identity issues. His flamboyant and androgynous characters\, as visitors on “The Planet“\, challenge gender norms and societal expectations. Smolin’s work delivers condensed psycho-symbolic imagery that deals with themes of identity\, religion\, oppression\, and conformity.
