Experience a reading by Jennifer Bartell with the opening reader Candace Wiley. \nFoodways in Poetry \nCollard greens\, okra\, fried chicken\, company chicken\, pileau (pronounced perlo)\, sweet tea\, pound cake and more appear throughout my poetry. Each dish is important to my experiences with my family and my community. Think of the dishes that are staples for you. What are the memories you have with that food? How do you feel while eating it? Who are you with? The tastes\, textures\, and smells are the menu for memory\, emotion\, and therefore poetry. In this workshop\, we will explore the connections between food\, memory\, and poetry. Come with 1-2 dishes and memories associated with them in mind. She was born and raised in Bluefield\, a community of Johnsonville\, SC. She received the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a Poetry Concentration (2014) and the Master of Library and Information Science (2024) from the University of South Carolina. \nShe is the author of her debut book of poetry Traveling Mercy (Finishing Line Press\, 2023) and her second book of poetry Only Believe (The Word Works\, 2024) is a 2023 winner of The Hilary Tham Capital Collection. Both are published under the name Jennifer Bartell. Her poetry has been published in Obsidian\, Callaloo\, pluck!\, The Raleigh Review\, kinfolks\, Jasper Magazine\, the museum americana\, Scalawag\, and Kakalak\, among others. \nShe is a 2023 Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow and organized the Inaugural Soda City Poetry Festival in June 2024. An alumna of Agnes Scott College\, Jennifer has additional fellowships from Callaloo and The Watering Hole. She is an award-winning English educator who has taught English for 16 years and was the 2019-2020 Teacher of the year at Spring Valley High School. SUMMARY:Carolina Mountains to Shore
DESCRIPTION:The Carolinas have a beautiful and diverse landscape that is abundant with natural resources. Whether in the upcountry\, central hills\, or on the coast\, each region provides opportunities for recreation\, exploration\, and geologic inspiration. The landscape also reveals moments from our history and helps tell the stories that define Carolina heritage. Places and sights discovered while idly driving through the countryside\, visiting the cities and coast\, during quiet moments in nature\, or while glimpsing a lovely vista have inspired the work in this exhibition. \nCarolina Mountains to Shore feature the work of the Upcountry Fiber Artists which consists of six Carolina artists including Evelyn Beck\, Lynne Harrill\, Sara Quattlebaum\, Cynthia Steward\, Denny Webster\, and Kathryn Weston. They work with textiles to create artworks that range from pictorial to abstract\, small to large\, and colorful to subdued. Their adventurous use of fabric\, surface design\, and quilting create exciting and innovative works that share their unique and individual Carolina experience.

SUMMARY:Long Overdue: Embracing Contributions from Women in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:In Long Overdue\, Traci Wright Martin and Michelle Radford underscore the importance of recognizing and acknowledging women’s contributions. Traci Wright Martin’s charcoal and mixed media series\, “Art Herstory and the Moth\,” focuses on underrepresented women in art history\, paying tribute to them through visual quotations and symbolism. Michelle Radford highlights the historical oversight of women’s textile work and aims to bring recognition to their innovative designs as valuable artistic expressions. \nBoth artists challenge traditional perceptions of gender norms\, albeit in different contexts. Wright Martin challenges the overshadowing of female artists in art history by drawing a parallel to imagery of moths. Often an overlooked organism\, the moth in Martin’s work symbolizes the need for representation of the feminine art experience. Meanwhile\, Radford challenges distinctions between art and craft\, conceptual and decorative\, urging viewers to reconsider their attitudes toward women’s stitchwork and handicrafts.

The exhibition features the work of CPC member artists and friends of the CPC\, Kent Ambler\, Jim Campbell\, Steven Chapp\, Kevin Clinton\, Katya Cohen\, Addam Duncan\, Marty Epp-Carter\, Barbara Ervin\, Mandy Ferguson\, Phil Garrett\, David Gerhard\, Luis Jaramillo\, Nancy Jaramillo\, Catherine Labbe\, Shaun McCallum\, Vivian Morris\, Mark Mulfinger\, Jane Nodine\, Douglas Piper\, Deborah Puretz\, Roberta Restiano\, Ambrose Rouse\, Susan Staggs\, Jared Stanley\, Freda Sue\, Mary Walker\, Joel Wilkinson\, and Gerry Wubben. The exhibition opens with a First Friday reception from 6:00 – 9:00 pm on Friday\, September 2nd and continues until Wednesday\, October 26th\, 2022. After 2 years of an anemic social environment due to a challenging global crisis\, privatization has trumped community in many respects. This process has been visually hallmarked by face coverings\, which\, while vital to public health\, also represent the suppression of social interaction contributing to emotional isolation. In Unmasked\, printmakers reintroduce themselves to society through self-portraits. Participants were asked to create a self-portrait that is recognizable yet not necessarily realistic. These portraits range in print media\, from relief prints of woodcut and linoleum to intaglio and lithography.
