DESCRIPTION:Free admission made possible by National Endowment for the Arts\, SC Arts Commission\, BlueCross BlueShield of SC\, Colonial Life and Elizabeth Wheeler \nThe South Carolina Philharmonic presents its third annual sensory-friendly concert\, Family Time with the Phil\, on Sunday\, March 30th\, 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Koger Center for the Arts. As a component of the SCP’s educational and outreach programs\, this inclusive concert gives audience members the ability to fully experience orchestral music without any of the constraints of a standard performance. During this 60-minute program\, audience members are free to move about\, dance\, speak\, sing\, vocalize or move between the auditorium and the lobby if desired. Thanks to support from the National Endowment for the Arts\, SC Arts Commission\, BlueCross BlueShield of SC\, Colonial Life and Elizabeth Wheeler – this concert is free to the public. No registration is necessary. \nThe South Carolina Philharmonic will partner with various organizations to present this year’s family concert event. While the organization is currently filling its roster of partners\, previous organizations were The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment\, The SC Commission for the Blind\, Family Connections of SC\, Key Changes Therapy Services\, Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment Research Center and Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services. The orchestra is passionate about working with these partners to provide resources to the families that attend the event\, and to continue positioning the SC Philharmonic to provide opportunities that welcome all audiences by removing barriers. The event also boasts an instrument “petting zoo” in the lobby before the concert\, as well as the chance to meet some off-duty service dogs who also attend the performance. \nChild gets to experience a double bass at the 2024 Instrument Petting Zoo \nNumerous studies have highlighted the benefits of classical music\, particularly for young children and families. Research suggests that exposure to classical music can enhance brain function\, support cognitive development\, and improve relaxation. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that listening to classical compositions can reduce stress\, improve mood\, and even aid in emotional regulation. Additional research from the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that early exposure to music enhances neural connections related to memory and learning. These benefits\, with no ticket cost barriers\, make events like Family Time with the Phil an ideal way for families to introduce children to the joys of orchestral music in a welcoming environment. \nUnder the direction of Music Director Morihiko Nakahara\, this concert will feature a thoughtfully curated selection of orchestral pieces designed to captivate and inspire audiences of all ages. DESCRIPTION:SC Philharmonic Performs Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 and Strauss’ Duet-Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon \nThe South Carolina Philharmonic\, winner of the 2024 Governor’s Award for the Arts\, continues its 60th Anniversary Season with the orchestra’s third installment of Wolfgang & Wine on January 18th at 7:30 PM at Koger Center for the Arts. The night begins with the vibrant rhythms of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Concertino Cusqueño\, a lively dance that sweeps listeners into the colorful festivities of Peru. Richard Strauss’ Duet Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon is next. This work is a graceful pas de deux of melody and harmony that welcomes SCP members Joseph Eller (clarinet) and Patrick Herring (bassoon) to the front of the orchestra. The evening reaches its peak with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 39\, which unfolds like a majestic dance of elegance and brilliance. Tickets range $15-$60 and can be purchased at scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center Box Office at (803) 251-2222\, Mon-Fri. 9AM-5PM. Half-price student rush tickets are available 30 minutes prior to the concert for in-person purchases in select sections. \nFor this year’s Wolfgang & Wine event\, the SC Philharmonic is partnering with the Koger Center for the Arts concessions for a unique wine experience.  In addition to their typical selections\, the Koger’s catering department is preparing special wine offerings\, paired with the musical selections being performed by the SC Phil.  Tables will be in the lobby with wine from Austria\, neighboring regions and from the alto region of Italy – which is rumored to be the origin of Mozart’s favorite vino. Wine service will begin at 6:30PM and continue during intermission. \nIn 1947\, about the time Composer Richard Strauss began to conceive of the Duet-Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon\, Strauss was asked by a London journalist about what was next for him. “Well\, to die\, of course!” said the composer\, and he wasn’t far off the mark. However\, the composer still had work to do\, and his Duet Concertino premiered on April 4th\, 1948. This innaurgal performance was broadcast on Radio Lugano\, with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana conducted by Otmar Nussio\, with Armando Basile on clarinet and Bruno Bergamaschi on bassoon. The SC Philharmonic is delighted to welcome principal musicians Joseph Eller (clarinet) and Patrick Herring (bassoon) to the front of the orchestra to perform the Strauss – part of the orchestra’s 60th Anniversary celebration of local talents. \nMuch like the Strauss\, Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 is one of the final compositions by the symphonic master. This symphony is a prime example of the composer’s genius. Taken in its entirety\, the Symphony No. 39 is refreshing to the ear\, its pleasures only intensified by the fact that it is rarely performed. \nWhile the Wolfgang & Wine program explores the late-in-life works of two of the world’s greatest composers\, the concert also opens with the exhilarating modernity of Concertino Cusqueño by Gabriela Lena Frank – a living composer who is making a large impact on the classical world.  Identity has always been at the center of the music of composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972)\, who was included in The Washington Post’s 2017 list of the 35 most significant women composers in history. Born in Berkeley\, California\, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent\, Frank explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. The SC Philharmonic will turn the Koger Center into that famous school of witchcraft and wizardry\, with fun activities in the lobby during pre-show. The program includes plenty of music from the popular Harry Potter films\, alongside spooky classical fare like Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain\,” selections from Bernard Herrmann’s Suite from the film Psycho\, and highlights from Stephen Schwartz’ hit Broadway musical\, Wicked.  Tickets may be purchased by visiting scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center Box Office at 803-251-2222. \n \nFor this season’s spooky holiday offering\, the SC Philharmonic has enlisted the talents of conductor Yuriy Bekker. A critically acclaimed violinist and conductor\, Bekker has been a mainstay of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in Charleston\, SC for 15 years. The program includes plenty of music from the popular Harry Potter films\, alongside spooky classical fare like Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain\,” Greig’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Tickets may be purchased by visiting scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center Box Office at 803-251-2222. \nThough Music Director Morihiko Nakahara usually conducts the Halloween-themed concert\, the conductor’s schedule made that an impossibility this year. Nakahara was thrilled to enlist the talents of Antoine T. Clark for this season’s installment\, and to welcome this nationally-celebrated maestro to Columbia\, SC to lead the SC Philharmonic during this program. \nCompelling interpretations\, inventive performances and an energetic stage presence are the hallmarks of Mr. Clark. The founding Artistic and Music Director of the Worthington Chamber Orchestra in Ohio (formerly McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra\, established in 2013)\, Clark was recently appointed Associate Conductor of West Virginia’s Wheeling Symphony Orchestra after serving as Assistant Conductor since 2021. DESCRIPTION:One Night with Don Juan\, the fifth concert in the 22/23 Masterworks Series\, welcomes internationally celebrated pianist Alessio Bax to perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2\, which will close the concert. The program begins with Richard Strauss’ virtuosic tone-poem Don Juan. The rolling national premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite will serve as the evening’s centerpiece. \nPianist Alessio Bax is now a familiar face on five continents\, not only as a recitalist and chamber musician\, but also as a concerto soloist who has appeared with more than 150 orchestras\, including the London\, Royal\, and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras\, the New York\, Boston\, Dallas\, Cincinnati\, Seattle\, Sydney\, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras\, and the NHK Symphony in Japan\, collaborating with such eminent conductors as Marin Alsop\, Vladimir Ashkenazy\, Sir Andrew Davis\, Fabio Luisi\, Sir Simon Rattle\, Yuri Temirkanov\, and Jaap van Zweden. \nBax appeared with the South Carolina Philharmonic in 2014 when he performed Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor. Bax and Music Director Morihiko Nakahara made an informal pact that the pianist would return to Columbia to perform Brahms’ second piano concerto\, and they have finally made good on that agreement as Bax prepares to take the Koger Center Stage once again in 2023.

The Torke will feature critically-acclaimed and Grammy Nominated guest soloist Tessa Lark on violin. All concerts this season are presented in person and livestreamed\, and tickets may be purchased at www.scphilharmonic.com. \nBeethoven & Blue Jeans is one of the SC Philharmonic’s hit annual concert events.
