DESCRIPTION:Lander University invites the Greenwood and Lander communities to attend a talk on Tuesday\, Oct. 28\, by Dr. Andrew Jameson\, professor of English at Lander University. The lecture\, titled “A Drunken History: the Story of America’s Love of Alcohol and the Drinks that Have Defined Us\,” will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with free refreshments and a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will include time for questions. This event is free and open to the public. \nFrom the very beginning\, America has had a love affair with alcohol in numerous forms. Whether it be a mug of rum and cider in a tavern in Concord\, Massachusetts\, a Mint Julip on the veranda of a plantation in Natchez\, Mississippi\, a fruit bedecked Zombie in a Tiki restaurant in Los Angeles\, or a lunch martini in a bar in Manhattan\, we have imbibed oceans of booze over the centuries.\nIn fact\, it can be highly insightful to examine many eras of American life through the lens of the drinks we have created and consumed. This lecture will tell the story of America’s favorite cocktails and concoctions and what they say about people\, for good or ill. The presentation will trace different eras of American life\, focusing on iconic and forgotten drinks as well as the people who created them. Jameson will also provide recipes to make the drinks he will discuss\, as well as helpful tips for making your own preferred drink even better. \nDr. Andy Jameson is an associate professor of English in the Department of Communication and Languages at Lander University. He is also a writer who has had his stories published in numerous publications and journals\, including Moon City Review\, Sixfold and South Dakota Review. His work focuses on the subtle dynamics of masculinity and family life\, usually with a southern accent.

SUMMARY:Lander University Hosts Better Questions Art Exhibit and Reception
DESCRIPTION:This is an effort to ask better questions about the information that communities produce and amass to establish a collective memory about the prison industry in the United States. One question we want to keep asking is\, “What are the consequences of giving someone a life sentence to prison?” This event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display from October 6th until November 4th. \nMolly’s recent work documents her relationship with Nancy\, a 77-year-old woman serving life without parole. Chris’s work wrestles with his relationship to Richard\, a veteran and intellectual\, someone he met while he was also incarcerated\, who is now dying of terminal cancer behind prison walls. The objects on view are artifacts of our own efforts to understand\, and they follow a trail where personal responsibility is to “feel” is headed. \nMolly Ott is a South Carolinian whose work is preoccupied with rituals of Americana and personal myth. She works with nonprofits in Los Angeles County to bring visual art and creative writing to programming to juveniles and adults within the carceral system. She graduated from Lander University in 2017 and holds an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder in sculpture and post-studio practice. \nChristian Branscombe was incarcerated for 25 years during which he was the chairman of an art room for over a decade at Lancaster\, California State Prisons. DESCRIPTION:Lander University will host a “Germanic Gems for Piano and Cello” in Barksdale Retail Hall at 7 p.m. March 28. This event is free and open to the public. Faculty members Richard Thomas and Andrew Sheffield will perform music composed by Ludwig van Beethoven\, Paul Hindemith and Feliz Mendelssohn. \nAbout the Event: \nRichard Thomas is a music faculty member at Lander University and North Greenville University. He is the former chair and professor of music of the Department of Music at Presbyterian College and director of the PC Chamber Orchestra. He also served on the faculty of UNC Wilmington\, the Universidad del Cauca and Universidad del Valle in Colombia\, the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica of the Dominican Republic and the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Thomas was String Department Head at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden\, Maine\, from 1999-2008. \nAmong his many credits are being a member of the Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia\, Sinfónica Nacional of the Dominican Republic and the Dallas Lyric Opera\, as well as assistant principal of the South Carolina Philharmonic and principal of the Wilmington Symphony. In addition\, Thomas conducted the North Texas Region High School Orchestra in 2025\, the South Carolina 2018 Region I High School Orchestra\, and the South Carolina Region 3 High School Orchestra in 2020. He has performed and taught in China\, Colombia\, Dominican Republic\, Ecuador\, Japan\, Puerto Rico\, Taiwan and Venezuela. He studied at DePauw Universityand the University of North Texas before earning a doctorate in musical arts from the University of South Carolina. Thomas was named the Clinton Chronicle “Teacher of the Year” for 2024-2025. \nAndrew Sheffield earned his bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and his master’s degree in music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His principal teachers include Frank Weinstock and Robert Weirich\, and he pursued additional studies with Eteri Andjapridze and Maurice Hinson and collaborative coaching with Donna Loewy. Having made his concerto debut at age 16 with the Macon Symphony Orchestra\, Sheffield has performed extensively as a soloist and a collaborator at the International Festival-Institute at Round Top (Texas)\, the Kansas City Cello Clinic and the International Clarinet Society’s Clarinet Fest\, and in master classes with renowned pianists Richard Goode and David Korevaar. He was a featured artist of the St. Louis Artist Presentation Society. \nUntil fall 2021\, Sheffield was an accompanist and adjunct instructor of piano\, musicianship and music theory at Presbyterian College and Newberry College. He directed the Laurens County Academy of Music at PC. DESCRIPTION:The Lander Film Festival will be celebrating its 15th anniversary and will be kicking off the week with a host of events. Dr. Misty Jameson\, professor of English\, will be discussing Monster Culture and the film director Roger Corman\, who she talked a great deal about in her English 403 course: The Horror Film. This event will take place on Thursday\, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Barratt Hall 126. The event is free and open to the public. \n“Roger Corman\, while working with low budgets and fast shooting schedules\, became a legend in Hollywood for his influence on young filmmakers and his ability to make a profit\,” says Jameson. “I’m hoping that festival attendees will enjoy taking this trip with me through the early days of his career\, before all the accolades\, when he was helping shape the monster culture of American drive-in cinema.” \nJameson noted that the presentation was originally written for the 2024 PCAS/ACAS Conference (Popular Culture/American Culture Association in the South)\, partly as a result of teaching her English 403 course. The original version of the presentation was only about 20 minutes long. The assistant professor of digital media at Lander will provide an exciting talk about the changing role of drone cinematography in contemporary filmmaking. This event will take place on Wednesday\, March 19 at 4 p.m. in Barratt Hall 126 on the Lander campus. \nIn his presentation\, Iriarte will go into the evolution of camera technology over time\, examining how it began as a tool for art and creativity before becoming influenced by computational\, tactical and political factors in the context of drone technology. Drawing on his own pioneering work with drone filmmaking\, Iriarte will demonstrate how drone cinematography\, once seen as an instrument for military and surveillance purposes\, is now reclaiming its artistic roots through creative exploration. \nThrough his ongoing projects\, Iriarte challenges the established norms of drone film technology by pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. His work seeks to reframe how drones are perceived in the cinematic world\, advocating for a return to a more creative and expressive use of aerial technology\, rather than solely serving as a tool for strategic or tactical purposes. \nThe presentation promises to offer both filmmakers and enthusiasts a new perspective into the intersection of technology\, politics and art. The competition will begin with a kickoff workshop for entrants\, scheduled for Thursday\, February 27\, at 4:30 p.m. on Lander’s campus. Those interested in entering the competition are encouraged to sign up by visiting www.landerfilmfestival.com. \n“We are excited to once again welcome filmmakers of any skill level to join us\, whether for their first time or for the 15th time\,” said Dr. Robert Stevenson\, chair of the Lander Film Festival and professor at Lander. “Our festival continues to be an excellent learning opportunity for our Lander students\, as well as our greater community.” \nPast contestants have noted that the competition is just as challenging as it is rewarding. Filmmakers have a mere ten days to produce\, edit and submit a five-minute short film. At the kickoff workshop on February 27\, entrants will receive a line of dialogue that must be incorporated into their film. \n“The required line of dialogue is a unique component of the Lander Film Festival\,” said Stevenson. “Our filmmakers have to think outside the box\, and in many cases completely re-work ideas they may have been considering.” \nFilmmakers will compete across three divisions: High School\, College and Open. The registration fee is $20 for the College and High School Division\, and $25 for the Open Division. Named for the first alumni director\, this award recognizes significant alumni achievement and dedication to both the Alumni Association and the University.\n❖ The Distinguished Alumni Award winner is Senator Billy J. Garrett\, Jr. ’78.\nThis award is presented for achieving distinction in one’s chosen field\, and for participation in civic\, cultural\, education or church activities. \n❖ The Young Alumni Award winner is Sara Hix McAda ’16\nThis award recognizes alumni who have graduated from Lander within the last 15 years and who have served their community in an exemplary way. \nKatherine Ramsey Foxworth ’97\, ’00 \nKaye Foxworth\, originally from Bamberg\, is a dedicated educator with 28 years of experience. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education in 1997 and a Master of Education in 2000\, both from Lander University. \nFoxworth currently serves as a Literacy Coach at Campobello Gramling School in Spartanburg District 1. She attributes much of her success to her formative years at Lander University\, which she credits for shaping her into a leader in her field. She loves Lander and enthusiastically shares her positive experiences to encourage students to consider the University. \nThroughout her career\, Foxworth has achieved numerous accolades\, including being named Teacher of the Year at both New Prospect Elementary and Campobello Gramling School\, and receiving the prestigious Ray Doughty Arts Education Award in 2019. A passionate advocate for the arts\, she has founded and led arts committees at multiple schools and secured over $300\,000 in grants for her district. \nSenator Billy J. Garrett\, Jr. ’78 \nSenator Garrett is the son of Billy J. Garrett\, Sr. and Sigrid S. Garrett. He grew up in Williamston as one of four children. In his early teens\, the family moved to Greenwood. Garrett later earned a B.A. in history from Lander University in 1978 and received his juris doctor from USC School of Law in 1983. \nAfter law school\, Senator Garrett returned to his hometown of Greenwood to start practicing law where he joined the Callison\, Dorn\, Thomason and Garrett Law Firm. In 1993\, he opened his own law practice\, the Garrett Law Firm\, P.C. \nOver his forty years as a practicing attorney and mediator\, Senator Garrett became licensed to practice in state courts and federal courts\, and recently to the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the recipient of the 1998 S.C. Supreme Court Recognition and Appreciation Award\, and the 2007 S.C. Board of Magistrate and Municipal Judges Award. \nHe was elected to the S.C. Senate in 2020 to begin his first four-year term. Senator Garrett now represents the newly zoned S.C. Senate District 10 that includes all of Greenwood County\, and parts of Saluda and Lexington Counties. \nSara Hix McAda ’16 \nSara McAda is a business professional with a passion for serving others. She currently serves as the investor engagement manager at the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce and is an adjunct instructor of professional development to business students at Lander University. \nMcAda has held a variety of leadership roles in senior residential care management\, including executive director at both The Blake at Hollingsworth Park and The Pearl at Five Forks\, prior to stepping into her current roles. \nShe holds an MBA in Health Care Administration from Southern Wesleyan University\, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Health Care Management from Lander University. She has certifications in dementia care\, health care quality and health care safety\, and is licensed as a South Carolina Community Residential Care Facility Administrator. \nOutside of her professional work\, she is deeply involved in her community. SUMMARY:Lander University Film Festival's Short Film Competition
DESCRIPTION:Lander University has announced the timeline for the Short Film Competition\, part of the 14th Annual Lander University Film Festival. This competition provides today’s filmmakers an opportunity to push their storytelling boundaries while showcasing their love of cinematography. \nA required kickoff workshop for entrants will be held on Tuesday\, March 12\, at 4 p.m. on the campus of Lander University. While at the kickoff\, participants will receive a unique line of dialogue that they are required to use in their five-minute film. Filmmakers will then have eight days to produce\, edit and perfect their submission. All participants must attend the kickoff to be eligible to compete. This will provide competitors with the information they will need to create their films and allow them to discuss their passion with professionals in the filmmaking business. The workshop will be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person. There will be three divisions of competitions\, which include a High School\, College and Open Division. The registration fee is $20 for the College and High School Division and $25 for the Open Division. \n“The filmmakers never fail to impress me with their creativity and execution in producing a quality short film in such a short period\,” commented Dr. Robert Stevenson\, professor of media and communication at Lander and chair of the festival. “I anxiously look forward to screening the films with the larger community.” Stevenson has been involved with Lander University’s Film Festival since 2010. \nSelected films will be shown on Saturday\, March 30\, at the Lander University Film Festival\, allowing filmmakers to showcase their films to the public.
