On Tuesday\, September 23\, 2025\, at 7:00 pm\, the Laurens County Museum will host a special lecture exploring that process—and how it continues to shape the nation today. \nHistorian\, re-enactor\, and original document collector Tim Lord will present “The Historical Path to the Constitution and the Information Age.” The program will be divided into two parts. Part 1\, from 7:00–8:00 pm\, will cover The History of the U.S. Constitution. After a short break\, Part 2 will follow with a 30-minute discussion on how the Constitution influenced the early Information Age. \nLord brings a unique perspective\, having retired after 53 years in the Information Technology field. The first in this ten-part series exploring key battles in the Ninety Six District will take place at the museum\, located at 116 South Public Square in Laurens. \nHistorian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will deliver an in-depth presentation titled “The Snow Campaign and the First Siege of Ninety Six.” The Snow Campaign marks the first land engagement in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War and unfolded within 20 miles of present-day Laurens County. \nWhy “The Snow Campaign”?\nFollowing the Patriot victory at the Battle of the Canebrake\, an extraordinary weather event occurred. A massive snowstorm swept through the South Carolina Backcountry\, dumping up to 18 inches of snow—a rare and dangerous accumulation in the region. This unseasonable storm created freezing\, hazardous conditions for both Patriot soldiers and Loyalist prisoners as they made their way back through the Upstate. The brutal weather left a lasting mark on the campaign and gave it its enduring name. \nThe lecture is free for Laurens County Museum members and youth\, with a suggested $5 donation for all others. This living history event\, held at 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, offers a captivating glimpse into the life of Reverend Martin\, who led 1\,200 of his parishioners from Ireland to South Carolina in 1772\, seeking refuge from the oppression of the British monarchy. \nThrough first-person narrative\, Ryals will portray Reverend Martin’s tale of defiance against British tyranny\, his suffering under British brutality\, and his survival to tell his remarkable story. Ryals\, a living history interpreter and reenactor\, is a member of the Lancaster County Revolutionary War 250th Committee and a public historian focused on the Revolutionary War in South Carolina’s Upcountry. \nThe event is open to the public. Admission is free for museum members and those aged 18 and under. SUMMARY:“Rosemont to Mount Vernon“ Exhibit Opening and Celebration August 15 at the Laurens County Museum
DESCRIPTION:Against all odds and over 165 years ago\, Ann Pamela Cunningham of Waterloo\, SC\, started the association that saved Mount Vernon\, home of the first United States President George Washington.  Thursday\, August 15\, at 2:00 pm\, the Laurens County Museum and the Rosemont Preservation Society will celebrate her 208th birthday and the opening of phase one of the “Rosemont to Mount Vernon” Exhibit at the Laurens County Museum\, 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC.  Refreshments will be served. The celebration is free and open to the public.\nThe Mount Vernon Ladies Association began raising funds to purchase the dilapidated mansion on the banks of the Potomac River in 1852 at their first meeting in Cross Hill\, SC\, at Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church.  The  exorbitant (at the time) price for purchase was $200\,000.  In addition\, Washington’s nephew\, John Washington\, owned Mount Vernon at the time and did not want to sell to an association of women!  The ladies who were led by Ann Pamela Cunningham\, persisted with much hard work\,  exceptional organization and persuasion skills\, eventually succeeded in purchasing Mount Vernon in 1859.  The restoration work began immediately\, and because of Ann Pamela’s vision\, Mount Vernon is the national treasure we know today.\nThe mansion is still owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.  The grounds of Rosemont Plantation in Waterloo are now owned by the Rosemont Preservation Society.  The Society is working to preserve the gardens and land of the First Lady of preservation in the United States\, Ann Pamela Cunningham.\nCome to the Laurens County Museum on August 15 to enjoy period music\, birthday refreshments\, and learn more about this fascinating daughter of Laurens County. SUMMARY:The Little River Regiment vs. The Little River Regiment – Civil War in the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:The Laurens County Museum Revolutionary War Lecture Series will confront the hard topic of neighbors fighting neighbors. Tuesday\, August 13\, at 7:00 PM\, historian Durant Ashmore will speak about “Laurens County vs. Laurens County. The Civil War in Laurens County during the Revolutionary War”.  The talk will be at the Laurens County Museum\, 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC.  The public is invited.  Museum members and those 18 years old and under are free.  Others are asked to support the museum with a $5 donation. \nPatriot against Loyalist. Cousin against cousin.  In at least nine battles and skirmishes\, Laurens County was divided in more ways than one.  There was a Little River Regiment fighting for freedom from the rule of King George\, III\, and a Little River Regiment fighting in support of the king.  Many battles were in the area specifically included in the current Laurens County boundaries\, but battles stretched from Ninety Six to Kings Mountain.  Come to the museum on August 13 to find out more about the men who fought against each other\, yet lived within just a few miles of one another. \nThe Laurens County Museum is free and open for visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Historian\, author\, and esteemed researcher Laura Elliott from Gadsden\, Alabama\, will delve into the life of Laurens County native William Hix\, a notable figure who\, along with his three brothers\, served during the Civil War. Hix became renowned as an artist and photographer\, among other pursuits. Admission to the lecture is free for museum members\, and non-members are encouraged to contribute a suggested donation of $5. The museum is conveniently located at 116 South Public Square\, Laurens\, SC. All are welcome to attend; simply bring your lunch and be prepared to learn! \nWilliam Hix’s artwork can be admired at State Houses in South Carolina and Virginia. Elliott recently acquired one of his paintings depicting a Columbia\, SC doctor at an auction in Laurens\, which will be showcased during the event. \nAccording to Mrs. Elliott\, “William Preston Hix is arguably one of Laurens’ most significant figures from the 19th Century\, yet his important contributions remain largely unknown. He was a brilliant\, talented individual bursting with potential\, a true artistic genius. Although overshadowed in the photography realm\, Hix eventually earned well-deserved recognition as an artist\, albeit belatedly. In business\, he initially shone brightly until he faced considerable adversity at the hands of a magnate. Hix’s life was a tapestry of highs and lows: skill and aptitude\, fortune and misfortune\, triumph and tragedy\, riches to rags – and back again. DESCRIPTION:Historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will hold nothing back in the telling of what actually happened in the battles and skirmishes of the Revolutionary War on Tuesday\, January 16\, 2024\, at 7:00 pm at the Laurens County Museum.  “The Viciousness in the Revolutionary War” is the title of the next talk in the Revolutionary War Lecture Series.  This lecture will be for adults only due to the graphic nature of the topic.\nAshmore said of the lecture\, “In many ways\, the Revolutionary War has been romanticized.  I assure you that war was anything but romantic.  In every lecture I have ever given\, and as many gory details as I have listed\, believe it or not\, I have held back significant details.  In this lecture I will not be holding back.  I think this lecture will give a more accurate portrayal of what really happened.”\nThis lecture is co-sponsored by the Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Committee and the Laurens County Museum.  There is a $5 suggested donation for those not members of the museum.
