SUMMARY:Lander Professor to Address Homelessness in Upcoming Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Lander University invites the Greenwood and Lander communities to attend the next installment of the Community Lecture Series Tuesday\, Feb. 3\, at the Arts Center of Greenwood (120 Main Street). Dr. Brian Pitman\, assistant professor of criminology at Lander\, will give a presentation titled “A Homeless ‘Crisis’? Understanding the Roots of and Policy Approaches to Homelessness in the U.S.” The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m.\, with light refreshments and a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will last approximately one hour\, with time for questions. \nAbout the Event: \nHomelessness is on the rise in the United States. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that between 2019 and 2023\, the number of people who experienced being unhoused for the first time increased by 23.3 percent. In 2024\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Grants Pass v. Johnson that municipalities banning unhoused people from camping on public property if there are no shelter beds available is not a violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. As a result\, many municipalities have passed ordinances that ban camping on public property. This lecture will explore the roots of homelessness in the United States\, and the effectiveness of these and other policy approaches to address it. \nDr. Brian Pitman is an assistant professor of criminology at Lander University. He has a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke\, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Old Dominion University in Norfolk\, Virginia. SUMMARY:Lander’s Franklin Rausch to Speak on Famous S.C. Revolutionary War Battle
DESCRIPTION:Lander University invites the Greenwood\, Laurens and Lander communities to attend a talk on Tuesday\, Sept. 23\, by Dr. Franklin Rausch\, a history professor at Lander University and a Revolutionary War historian. The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood (120 Main Street). Light refreshment and a cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the lecture will last approximately one hour\, with time for questions. \nDr. Franklin Rausch\, professor of history\, will share his knowledge about battles in South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. His lecture\, titled “The Siege of Savage’s Old Fields\,” focuses on the first battle fought in the state\, which took place between November 19 and November 22 in 1775 near present-day Ninety-Six. Rausch’s lecture will help recognize the battle’s upcoming 250th anniversary\, examining the historical details of the siege\, including battle strategies and war casualties. \nRausch earned his M.A. in Asian studies at Indiana University and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada. SUMMARY:Lander Public Health Professor to Discuss Aging in Amish Communities
DESCRIPTION:Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood invite the community to be a part of the 2024-25 Lecture Series Tuesday\, April 1\, for Dr. Claire Marie Mensack’s lecture\, “The Amish Way of Aging: The Dawdyhaus and the Grace of Life.” The lecture will be held at the Arts Center at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments and a cash bar available at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nIn collectivist cultures\, such as the Amish and other plain Anabaptist communities\, the good of the community is the focus\, with the family as a microcosm of that larger collectivist culture. In these families\, older members often remain at home or near the main family dwelling in what is known as the dawdyhaus – a separate or sometimes attached dwelling for aging family members. \nThe desire to move into the dawdyhaus and the responsibilities of adult children assuming greater household roles is not a forced responsibility\, but one assumed by a sense of yielding\, submission and grace. Among the Amish and other plain Anabaptist communities\, this sense of yielding is referred to as gelassenheit. As such\, the dawdyhaus is not only a noun in terms of space\, but also as a verb in terms of daily living and life. \nDr. Claire Marie Mensack is an assistant professor of public health at Lander University. She earned her Ph.D. in public health from the University of South Carolina\, along with a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from USC’s School of Medicine. Additionally\, she earned graduate certificates in gerontology and psychiatric rehabilitation. She also earned an M.A. in health and physical education\, and a B.A. in social and cultural anthropology from the University of Delaware. Should we embrace it or fear it? In this talk\, the audience will be invited to look closely at several interactive AI simulators\, particularly on social media\, and explore what AI can show us about how language works in the first place\, where meaning comes from and ultimately why we interact with other people. \nDr. Sean Barnette is a professor of English and assistant director of the Honors College at Lander. He holds an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of South Carolina\, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from the University of Tennessee. \nDr. Walter Iriarte is an assistant professor of digital media at Lander. He earned his Ph.D. in Rhetorics\, Communication\, and Information Design from Clemson University. Dr. Franklin Rausch\, professor of history at Lander\, will give a lecture titled “Understanding South Korea.” Rausch’s talk is a sequel to his popular lecture from last year’s series\, “Understanding North Korea.” The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe Republic of Korea (popularly known as South Korea) went from one of the poorest countries in the world following the Korean War (1950 – 1953) to one of the wealthiest. Moreover\, despite its small size\, the ROK has a global reach—an American citizen can drive a KIA while listening to K-Pop using a Samsung phone. \nIn “Understanding South Korea\,” Dr. Rausch will explain why South Korea\, in contrast to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (popularly known as North Korea)\, decided to engage with the global world\, how that engagement led to both economic success and political freedom\, how that combination led to its global reach\, and current problems facing the country today. \nRausch is a Professor of History at Lander University. He earned his M.A. in Asian studies at Indiana University and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver\, Canada. Dr. Matthew Malone\, associate professor of political science and homeland security at Lander\, will give a lecture commemorating the 35th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nNatural and man-made disasters are a common occurrence in the United States. South Carolina is no stranger to disaster. Since 2014\, the state has experienced twenty federally declared emergencies or disasters. These have included a winter storm\, flooding\, severe storms\, a fire\, COVID-19 and numerous hurricanes. The largest and costliest disaster in South Carolina\, however\, occurred 35 years ago: Hurricane Hugo. \nAt the time\, this was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history\, and it claimed over 60 lives. The country has learned a lot since Hurricane Hugo\, but Malone’s talk will explore whether communities are truly prepared for the next disaster. This lecture uses Hurricane Hugo as a case study to consider how the federal government can assist following a disaster and how individuals can prepare for these events. \nMalone is an associate professor of political science and homeland security\, as well as the program coordinator for the Master of Science in Emergency Management at Lander. He has a B.S. from the University of North Alabama\, an M.A. from the University of Alabama-Huntsville\, and a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy from Auburn University. DESCRIPTION:The 2024-25 Community Lecture Series\, hosted by Lander University and the Arts Center of Greenwood\, kicks off Tuesday\, September 3\, with a lecture from Dr. William Ramsey\, professor of history at Lander. Titled\, “Fighting Infamy: A Marine Fighter Pilot’s Epic Stand at the Battle of Wake Island\,” Ramsey’s lecture draws on research from his new book\, “Wake Island Wildcat\,” available for pre-order now on Amazon or wherever good books are sold. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, with complimentary refreshments and a cash bar opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nWhen the Japanese attacked Wake Island in December 1941—the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor—Marine pilot Henry T. Elrod took to the skies in his F4F Wildcat fighter to defend the American military base on the tiny Pacific atoll\, battling swarms of enemy planes and ships with rare courage and skill for the next two weeks. Captain Elrod\, who had attended Yale and spent his freshman year playing football at the University of Georgia\, had arrived mere days before as part of a fighter squadron of twelve pilots. \nOn December 10 and 11\, Elrod had two of the most remarkable days of the war for any pilot in any theater: he took on a group of twenty-two Japanese planes—shooting down two—and then bombed and strafed the destroyer Kisaragi\, sinking the vessel with all hands and becoming the first American pilot to sink a warship with small caliber bombs delivered by a fighter plane in World War II. Then\, once American aircraft were too damaged to fly\, the pilots joined the ground defense against Japanese invasion forces. Elrod assumed command of one sector of the beach and led the repulse of repeated enemy assaults until he was killed on the last day of the battle\, just before the American surrender. \nThough unsuccessful\, the against-the-odds battle for Wake Island buoyed American morale during a dark period of World War II. Elrod\, who became known as “Hammerin’ Hank\,” was a key figure in the defense. For his gallantry\, he was posthumously promoted to major and awarded the Medal of Honor. A US Navy frigate and a street at Marine Base Quantico were named for him\, and a piece of his plane is on display at the National Air and Space Museum. Drawing on research in military archives and materials from Elrod’s family\, William L. Ramsey tells Hammerin’ Hank’s full story—which is not only the history of the battle for Wake Island but also the experiences that led him to become a Marine fighter pilot—with drama and verve. \nWilliam L. Ramsey is an historian\, poet and professor of history at Lander. He received his Ph.D. from Tulane University in 1998\, and in addition to Lander\, has taught at Tulane\, SUNY Oswego and the University of Idaho. In 2005\, he received the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the University of Idaho and Washington State University\, acting jointly\, for public activism in defense of civil rights and racial tolerance\, and he was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2007 by the Student Association of the University of Idaho. His historical articles have appeared in the Journal of American History\, Georgia Historical Quarterly\, and the South Carolina Historical Magazine. His first book\, “The Yamasee War: A Study of Culture\, Economy and Conflict in the Colonial South\,” received the 2008 George C. Today\, hundreds of thousands of modern pilgrims still tread these ancient paths on their way to Compostela\, engaging in an idealized re-creation of the medieval pilgrimage. In this lecture\, Mentley explores what it means to be a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago in the 21st century. And who knows? You may hear the Camino de Santiago calling to you as well. \nMentley is a professor of Spanish in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Lander University\, where he also serves as the director of study abroad. Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Shana Southard-Dobbs will give a talk titled “Forget What You Know: Mythbusting Memory.” The lecture begins at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nMemory is an essential function of the human mind. Much of what we think and do throughout a day relies on our ability to successfully remember information and skills\, and our most treasured personal memories can help us to know and understand ourselves\, our families and our communities. Yet\, the familiarity of our own memories can obscure our understanding of memory’s true complexity. Many of the go-to strategies students rely on to learn and remember information are ineffective. Memories of personal experiences can change in surprising ways over time\, and a person’s confidence in their memory is sometimes a shockingly bad indicator of its accuracy. In this interactive talk\, Southard-Dobbs will illustrate important\, and sometimes surprising findings from the scientific research on memory that can impact the lives of every learner\, educator and community member. \nAt Lander\, Southard-Dobbs teaches courses on memory and cognitive psychology for the Department of Psychological Sciences and Human Services. She also mentors student researchers in her Stress and Cognition Lab. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Hendrix College\, an M.S. in Community Counseling from the University of Central Arkansas and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of North Texas. Assistant Professor of English Laura Martin will give a talk titled “Does Literature Make Us Better People?” The lecture begins at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nIt’s a commonly held belief that reading and writing are good for us\, not just academically\, but personally. This belief is so strongly held that prestigious universities like Georgetown and Rice incorporate literature into the studies of doctors-in-training for the explicitly stated purpose of teaching them empathy. But is the relationship between literature and compassion a direct correlation\, or is it more complicated? In this lecture\, Martin will explore the surprising relationship between literature and compassion and discuss how reading and writing can both help and hinder our understanding of others. \nLaura M. Martin is originally from Woodstock\, Illinois and currently resides in Greenville. She has a BA in Humanities with emphases in English and creative writing from New York University\, and an MFA in Creative Writing with a creative nonficition emphasis from Georgia College. This is her seventh year at Lander University where she teaches a variety of writing courses. Her essays appear in HuffPost\, Chicken Soup for the Soul\, New South\, Blue Earth Review\, SHIFT\, The Smart Set and Luna Luna\, among other publications. Senior Lecturer of English Brittany Cuenin will present “Traditional Fairy Tales: The Good\, the Gruesome and the Grimms” beginning at 6 p.m.\, with refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nThis lecture examines the first fairy tales recorded by the Brothers Grimm\, Charles Perrault\, and Madame de Villeneuve. Fairy tales have permeated cultures across the globe for centuries as entertainment. Professor Brittany Cuenin explores their historical\, social\, and cultural significance\, including famous stories such as Cinderella\, Beauty and the Beast\, and Hansel and Gretel. These stories often include grotesque villains and brave protagonists. Cuenin’s lecture will explore what adults and children learn and enjoy from these stories\, as well as how tales have been depicted in well-known illustrations and more recent Disney digital representations. \nCuenin is the director of the Lander University Writing Center and a lecturer in the Department of English and Foreign languages\, where she teaches courses on children’s literature and fairy tales. Cuenin earned her B.A. in English and M.A. in English Literature from Clemson University. This lively lecture on “The Art of Play” will be held Tuesday\, Sept. 12\, at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center of Greenwood\, and the event is free and open to the public. \nFred Rogers once said\, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children\, play is serious learning.” Engaging with a healthy sense of play allows the brain to let go of exterior expectations and run free. This lecture will explore the ways in which elements of “play” and “fun” aid in creative thought\, strategic planning and concept development. Professor Doug McAbee will discuss how he embraces playfulness and harnesses its creative power in the production of drawings\, sculptures and immersive installations. \nDoug McAbee is a professor of art at Lander University and an active artist. He earned a B.A. in Art and an M.F.A. at Winthrop University. Professor McAbee learned to weld when he was only seven years old and his creative research focuses on indoor and outdoor steel sculptures and contemporary drawing.
